I'd rather go back and play N64 Mario Golf, Toadstool Tour and even Advance Tour over this. First Everybody's Golf sucked, then Tennis Aces sucked, then EA bought Metalhead Software (Super Mega Baseball franchise) so they'll suck going forward and now this...what the heck has happened to arcade style sports games? Also, it's crazy that Golf Story is the best golf game to come out in 7 years on any system. If you haven't played it do yourself a favor and buy it. Expand

I was REALLY excited for this game. After playing Toadstool Tour for nearly 18 years(!), my friends and I were ready for another title in the MG series to play for the next 2 decades. TT was a wonderful balance of gameplay, strategy, and of course, Mushroom Kingdom wackiness.

Sadly... Mario Golf: Super Rush is NOT Toadstool Tour. The combination of my high expectations and nostalgia for the GameCube classic really affected my ability to enjoy this game. I realize that isn't fair to the developers of MGSR, as this is a NEW game with NEW gameplay modes, but if it ain't broke, why fix it?

Mario Golf Super Rush seems to suffer from an identity crisis. It feels too complicated for casual gamers, but too rigid for serious competitors (IMO). There's an 'RPG' mode, but the NPCs have nothing to say, the locations are sparse, and the story is snooze. You've got every Mario character ever to choose from and the 'Head Coach' is just named 'Head Coach'? Why not let Yoshi guide you through the adventure? Why is 'Birdo' your 'mama'? Why do you even need to 'rest'? It feels lazy and incomplete.

Speed Golf is admittedly fun, and the network play enhances it greatly because the local AI is atrocious.

One of my major gripes is that they got rid of replays... REPLAYS! I understand that they wouldn't work in speed or battle golf... but why take them out of single or multiplayer local play? Also, you can't see the trajectory of the ball / the trajectory never changes as you change clubs. This makes it really difficult to know the flight path of your shot when you're aiming at the tornados in XC mode, or simply trying to curve around trees. Why?!

I'm sure I'll learn to love it more (or at least LIKE it), and am excited to play online with my friends now that we're grown and have families of our own. Super Rush could have been great, but it's not.

This consists of an exceptionally tedious first section where you have to run after your ball - no carts, will beat the CPU by 10 strokes, and then have to sit and watch them miss from 3 inches repeatedly. If you survive this, you'll be treated to a disaster second section, "XC Golf", best described as "Everything you hated about trying to run up vertical mountains in Skyrim glued to everything you hated about trying to gauge depth on a handheld screen". You will not bother proceeding to the third, having given up and gone to do something more fun (tooth pulling without anaesthetic, perhaps).

Mario Golf: Super Rush is an empty husk of a game and the epitome of Nintendo's long and relentless journey towards making all of their games as soulless as possible.

The adventure mode is horrendously bland and pointless, it's linear to the point where you question why they even put all the time and effort into making it if all you do is travel from A to B to C and play the same courses over and over. The only things to do besides playing courses to reach the extremely anticlimactic ending is: talk to nameless Mario brand characters who say words, all of which are instantly forgotten, play practice missions which actually teach you some techniques but at the cost of doing them over and over until you memorize how to hit the shots as wanted, or buy gear at the stores which are completely useless unless they are the gear for the specific course you are about to play next in the plot. Speaking of plot, the story is eye-wateringly contrived and miserable. You drift apart from the only friends you have in the world to follow the whims of some nameless god in order to beat some sort of evil snow thing, but it really doesn't matter, by the end you will have forgotten why you did any of this and you are rewarded with nothing beyond some text on the screen trying to convince you that you did something meaningful, but you have not.

The golf is almost fine but still manages to be bad. The accuracy for each shot is not only randomly determined but also predetermined, so you get the worst of all worlds. You can't know how your shot's accuracy will line up when you hit it, but if you restart the match, now you do. Scoring a birdie/eagle/albatross/hole in one is rewarded with your character doing a spin and smiling or something, there are only two animations and neither are that congratulatory. This actually lines up pretty well with the fact that if you are running on the course, you will not be able to see any impressive shots you make, and there are no replays. If a ball falls into a hole and no one is there to see it, does it even matter? The accuracy shift, the redline of the shots, also doesn't matter. The wind hardly matters. Club choice depending on terrain doesn't matter. Just hit the ball to the next spot so that you can hit the ball to the next spot.

This is a bad video game and no one should play it. Actually, it's worse than that. It's a competently made video game that has no point in existing, other than to cause distress and regret. I write this review to try to cope with the fact that I spent sixty dollars to play an awful golf game by the developers who made Advanced Tour.

Created an account just to warn others. I am a huge fan of Mario Golf on GameCube, and as soon as I saw that a version was available for the Switch I bought it blindly without reading any reviews. A big mistake. This game is not about golf, and definitely not about skill. It was painfully easy to play well and I could finish the entire story mode in a day if it wasn't so boring. I have absolutely no idea what is going on over at Nintendo but this...it ain't it champ. What an empty game. Mechanics are boring and the game is far too easy. AI is a joke. The multiplayer is atrocious. What is even the point. The most money I have wasted in quite a while. If it ever gets better will update. But at the moment I cannot in good faith recommend this game to anybody at the moment.

I was very disappointed at this game. Years I was waiting for a good new Mario Golf and when it finally came to be it was a half-assed games-as-a -service attempt. You barely have any content asides from a mediocre RPG-single player story mode and you can't even level up your Mii outside the story with Stroke plays and such. There was hardly anything to unlock like Characters via Matchplay or gaining points by doing Tournaments to unlock new course. We don't have Ring shot or Minigolf as well. Sure I'm glad we also didn't get Slot Golf but I would hardly call this a game whatsoever. This is just another example of how Nintendo fails to make a good game for not taking it serious enough because it isn't a mobile money machine.
Further WHY THE HECK MAKE BALL CONTROL RANDOM NOW? in older installments you had to have some kind of skill to make sure the Ball fly's straight and where you want it to land but noooooo this time it has to be random, prolly to better appease casual players but even back then, all you had to do is time you button press well to get the optimal control what's so hard about that that casual players need to be pampered with randomness to not be overwhelmed. This game could have been good but with such a development failure of course it will sell even worse once word got out and puts in the final nail in the coffin for this "unrentable" franchise. If your a company that long on the market you should feel an obligation to maintain your franchises good standing for at least every "Generation" your on the market, even if it isn't the big selling product but for keeping a positive image and to have continues relevance. There is always a smaller but passionate market that you shouldn't sour your relation towards.

Gone are the ring shots modes, cup tournaments, challenges, best badges/birdie badges and star characters. None of the game modes are interesting and are very boring and basic. The graphics are pretty bad for the Switch (especially Shelltop Sanctuary golf course, it's awful). The characters only have one animation for a good or bad outcome when winning/losing a hole and it's very lazily done compared to the previous entries which had very flashy animations. The only thing good I have to say about the characters is that they have pretty good golfing outfits (save for a few like Yoshi and DK who don't have any).

If this game was 20$ or cheaper I would have gave this 7 or more but the fact it's a 60$ full game price is why it's a problem, it's like Nintendo doesn't simply doesn't care if they're ripping their off customers and simply charging that amount of money for being a Nintendo product. The seal of quality once used by the company has completely lost it's meaning. Play the previous golf entries or spend your money on another actually good Switch game.

They could have done a Golf With Your Friends silly game or a serious PGA golf game. But they failed at both. They pin marker is never right, the trees suck the speed and velocity out of any ball that comes near them, there are no fun short cuts or hole in ones yet they want you to hit up a cliff using a tornado. With Mario Tennis you had serious tennis and power up tennis with Mario Golf you someone don't get ether.

You’re able to control where on the ball you hit and able to put a topspin or backspin or even stronger variants. Super shots felt important and needed to be managed carefully. The aim of your shots are easy to figure out because you can follow the path of the shot and change it depending on the whole arc, giving fantastic control to the player.

Super Rush falls short of every single one of these. Character animations are practically dead and there’s no way to make snarky comments when others are shooting. The time I spent with the game I tried to parse how to simply put a backspin on my shot, and the game just doesn’t tell you anything. The game pretends to give you control over putting a spin on the ball, but then rng kicks in and it’ll change what your spin is regardless of your input. Different clubs don’t seem to change shot arcs but instead just change distance, something you can already do with any club. Aiming is an absolute mess, your only tools are a birds eye view that doesn’t show depth at all and a “first person” aiming mode that barely controls at all.

I would comment on the extra modes, but with how the game controls on the basest levels it just isn’t worth even getting into them. There’s a few neat multiplayer ideas but the single player possibilities are so sparse compared to the tournaments and challenges of older games. It’s to such an extent I don’t think the game could get course corrected even with patches, something that shouldn’t even be a requirement to ask for. As much as I want a good new Mario Golf game, this isn’t it. I’d recommend finding a copy of Toadstool Tour instead.

You just have no real control over the camera to speak of so it all feels like a guessing game.

I don't understand the point of the scanner / range finder either, as it doesn't even let me set a marker on the power bar as to where to stop in order to hit where i want to aim... unlike to TT where you could set markers on the bar to indicate precisely where you wanted to aim. I can't think of a single use for the scanner except checking the topography of where I'm going to land.

I like that you can change the flight curve mid-air, but I don't see how that's useful when I can't see the flight path before swinging to know if my actions are going to be effective or not.

They took out manual and forced all shots to be automatic shots, so it's like I there is little reward for skilled play. Also, the whole gimmick with the top of the power bar causing your shots to go wild just feels like punishing me, especially as without interesting courses, the only real "strategy" is to just drive as far as you can until you're putting on the green.

Almost all the maps are extremely boring and offer no interesting diverging paths. It's just standard, uninspired golf the entire time.

The new additions are neat, like the special clubs and shots, but the horribly stripped UI that makes it extremely hard, if not impossible, to plan precise shots along with the CONTINUED refusal to add mini golf back in and the lack of actual content has made this a real bummer for me. This game feels much more like a golf simulation than an arcade game - and I don't play mario sports games for a simulated difficulty - I play them for wacky over the top environments and plays that would be nearly impossible irl.

I can't recommend playing this until after they add more content, and even then it's not a sure thing. Just don't be like me and buy it physically so you can at least sell it or return it.

Running around the maps, running around the links, just lots of running. The load times are a bit much for how little is here and you get really sick of watching CPU players play through a hole and either get hole in ones and birdies or 6-8 strokes on a hole that takes them forever to complete. You can't skip CPU players, you have to watch them.

I really miss Mario Golf Toadstool Tour. I played that a lot and it was one of Nintendo's best sports titles but instead of modernizing that, they continued their Mario Sports trash series where the gimmicks are 90% of the game and everything that makes the sport what it is, is just not good.

I have to say this game is the worst in the series the game mechanic are watered down. They think people just want to chase the ball around or something.Disapponting to see such a beloved franchised get shafted by nintendo.

Probably the laziest "Nintendo" and "Mario" branded product I've ever bought. The gameplay is extremely bland and dull, with the only factor of depth being a rather stupid gimmick where you move the ball in the air in various stages, and this gimmick isn't even available for all the characters at the start of the game. In its current state (no updates released yet), I would say it's at the "shareware" level. If this game had been given away for free to NSO users it might have been acceptable, but as a $60 product it's just a joke. Nothing in the game looks complete. The feeling of playing is the same as experiencing a bug-free tech demo.

This is one of those games that is so incomplete for the price that it sounds like an insult. It's as if the seller has no respect for the customer. I'm surprised Nintendo considered a game that wouldn't even qualify for a mid-tier mobile game to be released for $60 for the main console. This game is so incomplete, so barebones, that it alone made me lose all confidence in Nintendo-licensed games. I hope more players will follow my "example" and not buy anything else from Nintendo until they start releasing full games again.

Speed Golf is undoubtedly the main attraction of the game and it is a pity that other modes aren´t also so good.

It’s great to see Mario Golf back with some great new modes to play but changes to the gameplay take the series one-step forward and two-steps back. [Issue #4, p.53]

In all, it's incredible, and a great purchase for fans of past installments. [Issue #54 – September 2021, p. 67]
