But unfortunately this game feels like a remake of a game that was entirely a product of its time. I never heard of this game prior to this release, although I am a huge fan of RPGs from the SNES era. When this game was released, this was probably an insane concept - multiple different stories, multiple different characters, multiple different mechanics, multiple different settings with completely different styles and music. This almost sounds like a tech demo from the SNES era. So I’ll start with the good. The HD 2D is absolutely beautiful. I mean stunning, it really speaks to the era of SNES and fully captures the spirit while greatly improving the presentation. They did a wonderful job with the graphics and remake, especially with consideration to the different settings. The sound design is wonderful but poorly fleshed out. The music is fantastic, but when each story has only 1-3 songs that just loop the entire time, it really loses its magic. The voice acting is generally pretty solid. The combat is excellent, and I like how they implemented various gameplay tweaks to the different settings to suit the times. Really solid turn based combat, but as with everything else in this game, it doesn’t stay around long enough to make any impact.

So that brings me to the major point about the game. All of these stories are so short, and the characters are part of the game so briefly that it loses all importance. It almost all feels as if each story is watching an episode of a TV show completely out of context, somewhere in the middle of the season. The moment you start to get any context, the story ends and you’re starting over elsewhere. It’s like getting an appetizer sampler at a restaurant - the portions are so small that you have to consciously think about what you enjoyed about each thing so you have any memory of it. Any sense of story progression, character progression, skill/stat development, etc feels entirely pointless in this game. So you’re essentially playing just to make it to the plot twist. I made it to the major plot twist and I was just fed up with the game by that point. I couldn’t care after the slog that the game put me through. The game felt more like a chore that I had to complete to get a drip feeding of the illusion of progression, even after the big twist.

It’s just a weird game to remake and invest so much time and energy making it look this good. They did such a good job on game that feels like an outdated tech demo. It’s rare when I can play through an entire game and in the end, it just feels like a waste of time. Of all the fantastic games out there that never made it to the US, it’s strange that they picked this one.

quite nice turn-based rpg but with a tactical side (case), but I consider that it is a rpg for children (no need to regen between fights, no need to farm xp, no need to manage mana...), but the big problem is that the stories are too short and really cliché (good guys against bad guys for each story)
there were much more useful rpgs to remaster than this one

One of the best JRPGs to ever do it but in HD-2D. The "censorship" is 2 of Shifu's lines being changed, and as someone who played the fan translation those lines change next to nothing. This is by far the best way to play this game.

Live a live may be my new favorite JRPG of all time. The game consists of 6 different stories from different time periods. Ranging from the earliest days of man, to the far far future. The game isn’t the longest, but that is also a breath of fresh air to me. Some games feel long for the sake of being long but live a live doesn’t overstay its welcome which helped me more consistently have fun and be surprised by the gameplay, story, and music. Live A Live is great, please play it. If you aren’t sure about it you can even download the demo and see if it jives with you.

The Nintendo switch has no shortage of games. No shortage of RPGs. And no shortage of team asano games, but even still Live A Live feels like required playing.

    CONS:
-Some changes in the English localisation that feel more like censorship.
-English voice acting is kind of bland.
-Final chapter is somewhat "meh", mostly dealing with final boss and bonus dungeons. Could've used more character interactions and story moments.

    FINAL SCORE:
8/10, Live A Live is a fun, classic JRPG that reminds me positively of Chrono Trigger and the older Final Fantasy games. Although all of the character scenarios play on classic tropes and clichés (Cube's scenario especially will give you strong ALIEN and 2001: A Space Odyssey vibes) it is all done very well and I enjoyed spending time with every protagonist. Which was why I was somewhat disappointed that there weren't really any interactions between them all in the final chapter, though for a SNES game that was originally released in 1994 I suppose that's understandable.

I hope with Live A Live, and Octopath Traveler and Triangle Strategy previously, we get more games in the 2.5 HD style. Whether they're remakes or original.

    LIVE A LIVE SCREEN 01

    Live A Live: analisi 1

You are presented with 7 different characters all relating to a different time period. You can select from any of the 7 there is no set path in how you play this game, each story is self-contained, and you can save and exit out of them whenever you want! Each character represents a different genre, for example in the Present Day you take control of a fighter Masaru Takahara in a street fighter style RPG tournament and The Distant Future is kind of like a visual novel where you experience a story through the eyes of a little robot. There's almost something for everyone here.

The graphics in this game are stellar, it’s easily the best-looking HD-2D game yet and Octopath Traveler & Triangle Strategy are already phenomenal looking games. Each story has been translated from the beautiful pixel art on the Super Famicom original perfectly to the home of HD-2D the Nintendo Switch. Every single environment is unbelievably gorgeous and stunningly detailed, characters look sharp, the colourful environments that blend so seamlessly with the 3D aspects. Rocks on cliffs, bamboo forests, the market stalls in a market and so many more. This game is just pure eye candy and, on an OLED, display it’s even better than words can describe.

Yoko Shimomura returned to do the music for this game, and you can tell because these rearrangements do the originals justice and then some. From the beautiful and immersive sound of traditional Chinese instruments as you walk along a Chinese mountain to the modern instruments used in the near future helps emphasise each time period’s feel and mood just perfectly. Each chapter is then topped off by a superb rearrangement of Megalomania that just completely hypes you up to take on the boss in front of you. This soundtrack is truly nothing short of a miracle!

Live A Live was honestly well worth the 28 year wait. This remake has the privilege to introduce a new audience to an influential and unique JRPG to the wider world and does so with flying colours! Playing and loving Live A Live as much as I have makes me that much more excited to get stuck into Chrono Trigger in future since both games were directed by the incredible Takashi Tokita and it makes me even more excited for the possibility of more classic NES and SNES Squaresoft and Enix JRPGs to be brought back into the spotlight in through the glory of HD-2D. If I was to give this game a numerical rating, it would be a 9/10. Dragon Quest III is looking to be the next remake and I can’t wait for more information on that one!

Team asano does it again, what a great game. 2022 was the year of the excellent RPGs imo. Thank you square enix for continuing to supply us with the fix that is hd 2D. Everything about this game is charming and nostalgic!

If you're a fan of RPGs from the 16-bit era, or if you're looking for something that doesn't require a huge time investment, LIVE A LIVE is one RPG you won't want to miss, and not just because it was a stepping stone to some of the classics of that era. It's a unique storytelling experience! [Issue #61 – September/October 2022, p. 73]

Live A Live not only brings a decades-old Japan exclusive to the west, but it also vastly improves it in the audio and visual sense. Flaws of the original are still present, but as a refreshed gem from the past, Live A Live is something every fan of the genre should give a chance to.

Despite its 90s origins, Live a Live feels novel, revitalising a genre that often feels too conservative. It’s a constantly shifting, time-travelling bonanza that foreshadows what Takita would perfect in 1995’s Chrono Trigger; 90s role-playing fans are now praying that it receives the same lavish remake treatment, alongside other classics of the time such as Final Fantasy VI. Live a Live is not without its faults, but in an age of fast-food entertainment that satiates without leaving a taste, this compendium is a curio that’s certainly worth your time.
