Superb art style and gorgeous environments/characters marred by floaty controls (especially frustration with shadow creatures attacking you as you fiddle with the flashlight), puzzles that are often too simplistic, and ungodly long loading times

Great story with a sooky atmosphere which will keep you engaged. In docked mode the game looks great and portable the game looks good as well (dynamic 720p resolution). The only issue is long loading times, which is not an issue not only on the switch version but also in all versions of the game.

The controls are garbage and everything is trial-by-death. Which could be forgiven if there wasn't a 25-30 second load screen every time you die. Doesn't seem like a lot on the page, but in practice it's an excruciating experience. And you will respawn in the middle of a chase not knowing that you need to be hold run immediately or die again and wait for another load.
It gets a 2 only because of the art direction is terrific. But thinking of what it could have been only makes it more frustrating.

It is a game that will easily catch you if you pay too much attention to your surroundings, but will ironically let you escape its clutches time and time again should you not find yourself entirely caught up in the warped reality it presents. For the most part the puzzle and platform gameplay never gets too difficult and so the entire experience is perfectly accessible, enjoyable, and entirely worthwhile in my opinion. The presentation itself will pique your curiosity and then the events themselves, as they unfold, should firmly grasp it and drag you into the experience. Expand

Little Nightmares is a painful game to play and review. It wants to be a new Limbo, and it could have been even better than that. In fact, it could have been a masterpiece. Instead, it's a beautiful mess whose developers seem intent on sabotaging their own work.

The art and storytelling of Little Nightmares are masterful. The graphics and sound design is fantastic. The creepy, grotesque characters and settings will stay with me for a long time. Some sequences gave me the creeps, including one fleeting image towards the end of the main game that literally made me shiver all across my body. No game, not even Resident Evil in Virtual Reality, ever gave me such a deep gut reaction. The ending of the DLC story, which is included, creeps on you like the final twist of the best horror novels, leaving you in a state of mixed horror and fascination.

All of that goodness, however, is almost completely wiped out by some of the worst gameplay mechanics you could possibly experience. Many sequences in the game are insta-death, trial and error affairs, and some involve pretty precise sequences of actions. That approach might work well for the genre, if it weren't for the maddeningly imprecise controls, which never once give you the feeling of being in charge of your character. Quite simply, the game demands precision, prevents you from attaining it, and then proceeds to punish you for that.

All those shortcomings could still make for a very frustrating game that's worth playing for the story alone–but the loading times make sure that playing Little Nightmares becomes not just frustrating, but a repellent experience. On the Switch, every single death is followed by staring at a black screen for about forty seconds, waiting for the scene to reload. Imagine what it means to go through the same three or four actions twenty times, desperately fighting the unresponsive controls, sometimes only lasting a few seconds, and then waiting for nearly one minute every time you fail. That's borderline evil game design–the kind that could lead even the most laid-back player to hang his head in despair, or throw a tantrum. To make things worse, all of those defects seem to grow worse as you play, and they reach ludicruous levels in the DLC.

Little Nightmares shines for its artwork, story, and amazingly crafted atmosphere. Unfortunately, those qualities only makes its baffling shortcomings more evident.

Amazing game in every aspect. It's creepy, beautiful and interesting.
Although it's quite short and a bit on the easy side, the DLC included and some collectibles will take you close to 10 hours for completion, which is not really bad for its price.

Amazing puzzle platformer in limbo/inside vein. More freedom to move than those games though. Controls can be a bit dodgy but that can't take anything away from what is a genuinely creepy experience.

Thankfully the length problem is somehow remedied because the Complete Edition contains the Secrets of the Maw DLC which is an extra 3 chapters on the game with a new character, gameplay mechanic and puzzles.

Get it on sale if you want your money's worth. Because no matter how good this game is, it's still too short for $30.

I love the perspective we get as well, but that comes with issues in conjunction with the controls. I ran off a few insta-death ledges by accident simply because I couldn't accurately gage where my character was based on the camera angle. Simple 'run left' bridges are an unnecessary hazard because of this. Meanwhile, other areas where you sneak above monsters in the rafters didn't bother me at all. Not falling is the challenge. Load times were also annoying, though this is likely just an issue on the Switch.

I don't really care too much about the controls in conjunction with the camera in the long run. Everything else in the game is so wonderfully refined, it's impossible to think of much else to criticize in what you get. The only issue that really, really, REALLY irked me was the length of the game.

If you look up online how long it takes to complete the main story of Little Nightmares, you'll likely see sources claim that it takes a minimum of 6 hours. Either this is a lie, or I'm better at the game than average players. But, I don't think this is the case. I beat Little Nightmares in less than 3 hours, and when I realized the game was winding to a close, I was left feeling underwhelming disappointment. It's so great and refined, but it ends right at what you'd think could generously be the three-fourths point.

The complete DLC offers a little more playtime (and more of a challenge), but it's a far less refined experience.

Still— I completely recommend this game if you can find it on sale. What we get is incredible, even if there's not much of it.

Held out for a long time on this game. Caught it on sale. This game is way overrated. Graphics are great. Minimal challenge. Controls are terrible. A lot of trial and error. Load times after each death are up there with the worst I have ever seen. It has some alright fun factor, but not near enough to make you want to complete the whole game.

The game looks great. Artwork is really creative. However the gameplay mechanics are quite poor. When you want to grab an object let's say, you sometimes just fail even if you press the grab button.

Also, the loading screens are extremely long. If you die, you can rest your eyes for a bit.

There may be other games in a similar vein to Little Nightmares, but it really is a truly unique adventure making fantastic use of the 3D space and lighting. Occasionally the controls feel a little clunky, but it’s forgivable as you experience a macabre game and world unlike any other.
