Superb art style and gorgeous environments/characters marred by floaty controls (especially frustration with shadow creatures attacking you as you fiddle with the flashlight), puzzles that are often too simplistic, and ungodly long loading times

Great story with a sooky atmosphere which will keep you engaged. In docked mode the game looks great and portable the game looks good as well (dynamic 720p resolution). The only issue is long loading times, which is not an issue not only on the switch version but also in all versions of the game.

The controls are garbage and everything is trial-by-death. Which could be forgiven if there wasn't a 25-30 second load screen every time you die. Doesn't seem like a lot on the page, but in practice it's an excruciating experience. And you will respawn in the middle of a chase not knowing that you need to be hold run immediately or die again and wait for another load.
It gets a 2 only because of the art direction is terrific. But thinking of what it could have been only makes it more frustrating.

It is a game that will easily catch you if you pay too much attention to your surroundings, but will ironically let you escape its clutches time and time again should you not find yourself entirely caught up in the warped reality it presents. For the most part the puzzle and platform gameplay never gets too difficult and so the entire experience is perfectly accessible, enjoyable, and entirely worthwhile in my opinion. The presentation itself will pique your curiosity and then the events themselves, as they unfold, should firmly grasp it and drag you into the experience. Expand

Little Nightmares is a painful game to play and review. It wants to be a new Limbo, and it could have been even better than that. In fact, it could have been a masterpiece. Instead, it's a beautiful mess whose developers seem intent on sabotaging their own work.

The art and storytelling of Little Nightmares are masterful. The graphics and sound design is fantastic. The creepy, grotesque characters and settings will stay with me for a long time. Some sequences gave me the creeps, including one fleeting image towards the end of the main game that literally made me shiver all across my body. No game, not even Resident Evil in Virtual Reality, ever gave me such a deep gut reaction. The ending of the DLC story, which is included, creeps on you like the final twist of the best horror novels, leaving you in a state of mixed horror and fascination.

All of that goodness, however, is almost completely wiped out by some of the worst gameplay mechanics you could possibly experience. Many sequences in the game are insta-death, trial and error affairs, and some involve pretty precise sequences of actions. That approach might work well for the genre, if it weren't for the maddeningly imprecise controls, which never once give you the feeling of being in charge of your character. Quite simply, the game demands precision, prevents you from attaining it, and then proceeds to punish you for that.

All those shortcomings could still make for a very frustrating game that's worth playing for the story alone–but the loading times make sure that playing Little Nightmares becomes not just frustrating, but a repellent experience. On the Switch, every single death is followed by staring at a black screen for about forty seconds, waiting for the scene to reload. Imagine what it means to go through the same three or four actions twenty times, desperately fighting the unresponsive controls, sometimes only lasting a few seconds, and then waiting for nearly one minute every time you fail. That's borderline evil game design–the kind that could lead even the most laid-back player to hang his head in despair, or throw a tantrum. To make things worse, all of those defects seem to grow worse as you play, and they reach ludicruous levels in the DLC.

Little Nightmares shines for its artwork, story, and amazingly crafted atmosphere. Unfortunately, those qualities only makes its baffling shortcomings more evident.

Amazing game in every aspect. It's creepy, beautiful and interesting.
Although it's quite short and a bit on the easy side, the DLC included and some collectibles will take you close to 10 hours for completion, which is not really bad for its price.

I love the perspective we get as well, but that comes with issues in conjunction with the controls. I ran off a few insta-death ledges by accident simply because I couldn't accurately gage where my character was based on the camera angle. Simple 'run left' bridges are an unnecessary hazard because of this. Meanwhile, other areas where you sneak above monsters in the rafters didn't bother me at all. Not falling is the challenge. Load times were also annoying, though this is likely just an issue on the Switch.

I don't really care too much about the controls in conjunction with the camera in the long run. Everything else in the game is so wonderfully refined, it's impossible to think of much else to criticize in what you get. The only issue that really, really, REALLY irked me was the length of the game.

If you look up online how long it takes to complete the main story of Little Nightmares, you'll likely see sources claim that it takes a minimum of 6 hours. Either this is a lie, or I'm better at the game than average players. But, I don't think this is the case. I beat Little Nightmares in less than 3 hours, and when I realized the game was winding to a close, I was left feeling underwhelming disappointment. It's so great and refined, but it ends right at what you'd think could generously be the three-fourths point.

The complete DLC offers a little more playtime (and more of a challenge), but it's a far less refined experience.

Still— I completely recommend this game if you can find it on sale. What we get is incredible, even if there's not much of it.

I fell in love with this game the moment it started, I loved the art style, I loved the contrast between you character Six and the environment, being so big and imposing, much like a nightmare where you're tiny and helpless, a minute in and I already loved it... Then I kept playing.

The game is 2.5D in that everything is 3D, but you're in a 2D plain... most of the time. Because you can move vertically and horizontally, any time the game has you walk across something, you have a 60% chance of falling off and starting over, with checkpoints that just don't care about you or your fun and will sit you back entire sections.

In the same vein, enemy encounters can go from tense and blood bumping, to downright infuriating. Without spoiling a game from 2017, the final section with The Janitor, Mr. Tickles himself, glitched for me, and when pulling the box, he would grab me no matter what, rather than the box like he's meant to, however I reloaded and tried again and low and behold, it worked first try. There's also an issue with warping into enemy hands, sometimes I'll be real life inches away from the hand, and Six will just warm right on back and into their hands, which of course did carry over into the DLC.

The puzzles and general gameplay otherwise, is very good, never TOO easy, but never frustratingly hard either, I never felt hopelessly lost and confused, but also never felt bored either. That being said, occasionally the controls can still screw you over and despite me holding down the trigger for dear life, Six will instead hug a wall, or stare at a grabbable object, the game also liked the bug out with these as well. At one section in the second dlc, I had to climb a drawer, and couldn't, I was running up to it and jumping, jumping underneath it, jumping a little ways away, nothing... reloaded the game and did it, luckily the dlc checkpoints are a bit more forgiving.

Like I said earlier, design wise the game is phenomenal, The Nightmare Before Christmas is my favourite movie ever,, so hearing the game invokes his and Tim Burtons works, made me very excited, and the inspiration is apparent, it's very similar to something like Coraline but gross and bloody, and I adore it. Sound wise the game is also great, the crunching bone noises of when The Janitor catches you and the bone chilling shrieks of the Twin Chefs when they see you fill me absolute dread, almost as much dread as knowing I'll have to sit on a loading screen for about 1 minute. Yeah that's another issue, it's probably just an issue with The Switch port, but the loading screens are so damn long, it makes failure less of a learning experience and more of an opportunity to browse Reddit.

My final complaint and praise, comes from the final part of the game, lets get the negativity out of the way so we can end on a high note. The ending is incomprehensible, it takes its minimalist story telling too far and leaves you confused as opposed to intrigued, what makes this kind of story telling work, are clues and hints, little breadcrumbs to get you theorizing, but Little Nightmares doesn't do that, it just leaves you confused. Luckily the dlc goes some way to explain what the little Gnome boys are, so that's appreciated. Now for the good part, LITERALLY EVERYTHING ELSE. I love walking through the final section of the game, all the disgustingly obese guests eating children, and when they see you and start chasing you is perfect, some of the few chase sequences I like in the game, mainly because you know the consequences, they want to eat you and you gotta get the hell out of dodge, it's amazing. It's visually, audibly and for once, actually great to play, and culminating into a final boss that's fun, creepy and not too terribly difficult, I love it.

The DLC episodes are pretty much of the same quality, but these focus more on puzzle solving than monster chasing, so I just tend to get less headaches playing it, though still not perfect, I did warp into enemy hands a couple times and again, The Drawer. Overall very good, I like the gameplay mechanic of using the gnomes, the sequence with The Janitor in the dark is genuinely scary, and the ending twist is great, I like it way more than the main game.

Overall, the game is good, but JUST good, the more I played the less I liked it, I've yet to play Little Nightmares 2, but I certainly will, I just hope it controls a little better.

The game itself is fun, it definitely had me hooked and I didn’t want to stop playing it until I had completed it fully. I found it did the job of making you feel scared very well. However, it is mainly just a simple platformer which gets slightly boring as time goes on in the game.

The use of HD rumble was really good, helped set the scary mood when a monster arrives. I bought the game on the eShop for a heavily discounted price, I think around £8. For this price, I did really think the game was value for money and I may replay it at some point (though, they are bringing out a sequel which I would check out). Full price on Amazon is £29. For this price I will admit I think the game is slightly disappointing as there is not that much meat to it for £30. Buy it on sale and you will love it!

After sinking hours and hours into massive open world games it was nice to have a defined story, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Sometimes the game was frustrating, much of this however was down to the slight disconnect with the 3d perspective - it was often difficult to line up jumps etc. Not enough to detract from a great game experience.

P.s. i played no.2 first, and didn't feel the need to play the first for story (though I went back and played that as well for the fun!)

    Eerie, mysterious, yet charming.

The Good - the game gives a powerful sense of mystery, eeriness, and a bit of fear without a single word or dialogue. This is quite impressive. - visuals are really creepy butts there's a certain cute charm to the game at the same time. I think it's the way the protagonist moves around. It's very childlike. The visuals also remind me of an old game

    The Good

    - the game gives a powerful sense of mystery, eeriness, and a bit of fear without a single word or dialogue. This is quite impressive.

    - visuals are really creepy butts there's a certain cute charm to the game at the same time. I think it's the way the protagonist moves around. It's very childlike. The visuals also remind me of an old game call evil twin, which I liked a lot back then.

    - carrying and throwing around objects feels realistic. the way the object interacts with the character and the environment it's what you expect. For example, a pot will topple over if you lean on it too much. A glass will break if it falls down from too high up, a toilet paper roll Will roll if you throw it, etc etc.

    - the view of the game shows the sections in between floors, which makes the whole thing looks like you are staring into a open dollhouse. Added to this effect is that the place is constantly swaying around. This can be seen with objects rolling and sliding a boat in some rooms. I think is over all adds to the eeriness of the atmosphere

    - the puzzles are really interesting. They require you to be creative, and try to use common sense with regards to household objects and physics to solve the problem, and get to the next area.

    - watching the protagonist struggle with items that are bigger than it juice the game a realistic feel. Also the way she struggles to open, pull, climb sayings also adds to this effect. And if she drops from a Heights you can tell she gets hurt a little, and if she falls from really high up shell of course die.

    - when the temperature is cold you can see her shivering.

    - there is a ever sense of growing mystery surrounding the whole atmosphere. Like who is this child? And what is this place? Who is the ominous leader?

    - the music is really fitting for the environment. Especially when your character is hungry, and the children chanting sound plays in the background.

    - the final area was really intense. It changed the dynamic of the game a little bit, grotesque to Erie. I only wish it was longer, because it felt like it was going towards a really interesting direction.

    - the mysterious story behind the game it's very intriguing. In the kids story that part where all the little hats creatures stand in the front of the fireplace suggest thought they where also kids but lost their human form. Maybe because they got captured.

    - the sounds of objects dropping and hitting surfaces is very crisp and clear, enhancing the tension of the stealth gameplay. Every little action has a sound associated with it.

    - the game makes clever use of object placements sometimes. Like when you face the lady. You never know when she's going to pop out, so the game puts a lot of mannequins that resembles her image in the foreground which makes you second-guess where she might come from, which also builds on the tension.

    - the parts for your against the lady is just really well done. If you're scared of those Asian horror movies, this would be the gameplay version of that same fear.

    - The AI enemies were designed and programmed very well. Almost no death felt cheap.

    The Bad

    - it's hard to tell whether some of the objects are in the background or the foreground. 1 parts where you are writing a zip line and I thought the bad guy was in the background but he was actually in the foreground, the same alignment as me. Another time, I was trying to grab the chain outside of the ship but the camera was so far away that I couldn't tell where the chain was relative to my position

    - that entire fat people chase segment reminded me of spirited away. Never really experienced something like that in a game, or at least in the same way. How they are all chasing you like mindless maniacs, combined with the music building up

    - sometimes an object in the foreground my block your view as you're traversing in the background. Though this is rare.

    - some of the puzzles we're a little bit finicky because the physics didn't work perfectly well with what's the developers intended. That part in the kids story where you had to bring a lever down into the pool of water and move a box was guilty of this. You have 2 so believer onto the box then turn on the box and throw the livre onto land. The problem is that you can only throw the lever onto the box at a certain angle. The many failures led me to try an abundant amount of other methods which were obviously futile. The thing is that I knew the solution to the puzzle, but it was the crummy physics that led me to fail it. I tried many other methods but they were obviously

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I want to make one point that others haven't made. It's a SPOILER.

In the DLC there's a sequence where you have to kill a water monster with a Television. I jumped on top of the TV, rode it down into the water, and stayed on top during the electric shock. But the monster only dies if you push the TV into the water, not if you ride the TV into the water. The TV goes in the water either way. The same electric shock happens to the monster. You avoid the shock either way. But the monster only dies if you do what the developers planned.

Here's why this is a huge problem. If you want me to push the TV into the water and I don't do it right, you have to kill me. That's how I know that I didn't solve the puzzle. What you cannot do is let me fail the puzzle but not tell me, and have me swim around in the darkness, climbing things and pushing things and searching blindly. This is an old lesson. Imagine asking the player to build a canoe, paddle to an island, and light a fire. You can't wait until the fire is lit to tell them that the canoe has a hole in it. I got to the island. I made the fire. Your chance to tell me about the canoe is long gone.

While some of the puzzles in the game are well-conceived, especially later in the DLC, this TV one and some others are sloppily designed. And as others have mentioned, the load times make this a poor experience. The artwork, lore, and story are really strong. But they're fighting against the lackluster implementation.

little nightmare is a great spooky game and you can relive small traumas or fears from your childhood.
undoubtedly a game that you stay looking at the details of the game you could stay for hours seeing all its atmosphere and the grotesque and creepy design of the characters.
if you want to spend some time playing a horror or puzzle game this game would be ideal for you

The story and the visuals are amazing. But it takes forever to reload (30 seconds) , the controls don’t respond good sometimes and there no control of the camera so you encounter hairy situations . Other than that great game

The game itself is very good, but it has one huge, massive, gigantic, glaring problem. I can not recommend this game to Switch players because of the ridiculously long level reloading time, it should be a couple of seconds at most, like almost every other game I've ever played.

Little Nightmares will draw immediate (and deserved) comparisons to Limbo and Inside. It’s not quite as good as either of those in terms of storytelling or deeper themes, but those are high bars to clear. The level design is good, the sound and art are wonderfully horrifying (the blood-pounding with vibrations as Six is terrified adds a dimension).

It’s able to be finished comfortably in under ten hours making it a buy-and-finish in a weekend game. But, the load times after dying (and you will die) are agonising. Why is it nearly 30 seconds each time? Some of the checkpoints (lamps and candles) don’t trigger and there were sections I was sent back a long way. So, an eight. It loses a point for the frustrating load times and another point because it’s not quite as the Inside/Limbo level of storytelling. However, it is still quite, quite good, and worth buying when it’s on-sale.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A trilha sonora nota 10. A única coisa a melhorar talvez seja a jogabilidade e controles que muitas vezes parecem não responder aos comandos. Expand

A very unique horror game that throws one into an immersive and unsettling world filled with unique monsters and set pieces. The aesthetics of this game really sells it and the creepiness and vagueness of the Maw which adds to this games impressive immersion. A fantastic game that anyone should pick up and try.

There may be other games in a similar vein to Little Nightmares, but it really is a truly unique adventure making fantastic use of the 3D space and lighting. Occasionally the controls feel a little clunky, but it’s forgivable as you experience a macabre game and world unlike any other.
