Because of this new aspect, the levels are also considerably easier then those of past games. Being a multiplayer centered game, it takes away what I love the most about Kirby games, just being able to pick it up and play whenever you want (unless you were playing on a home console, but isn’t a barrier of any sort for the switch.) Overall, I think Nintendo and HAL could’ve done a lot better with this game, and I hope the next Kirby game isn’t as disappointing. Expand

This game had a lot of potential but somehow misses the mark. I can summarize the experience pretty quickly. Move around an over-world map to select levels, enter the levels to gain co-operative players, things move around fast, level ends, and repeat. The feeling of this game as I played it was, "What's the point?" It didn't feel engaging and didn't draw me in to keep playing it.

I'm no Kirby fan but it can't be a good sign if the mini-games are more fun than the actual base game. The sprite work and animation are good but the controls are so sluggish and the difficulty is non-existent. If there is literally no challenge at all, what is the point of playing besides looking at the colorful visuals?

Gameplay - very reminiscent of the new Rayman formula but with a Lost Vikings twist. You swap between usable characters with differing powers (absorbed using Kirby's patented eating disorder), in order to solve puzzles and progress the levels. Hidden characters, levels and unlocks are plentiful.

Graphics - Very crisp and vibrant, as Kirby fans have come to expect and again reminiscent of the Rayman vibe. Effects are handled wonderfully, with chaos ensuing often on-screen and no dip in frame rate.

Sound - Meh. It's the typical Nintendo soundtrack, lots of chimes and happy crescendo's. Nothing really standout here, suffice to say it does the job.

Other - I am a sucker for the Nintendo couch co-op experiences, they do them so well. That said, the game suffers a bit when playing solo, it was clearly designed with cooperative play in mind.

Verdict - Not a bad entry for Kirby on Switch by any means. A little unimaginative, the story is bland and the difficulty doesn't really see any kind of spike until late game (like most Nintendo platformers). Overall a worthy pick-up if you love the franchise or are looking for something fun to play with a friend. Otherwise it may be worth waiting for a sale, or looking for a deal. 7/10

Kirby Star Allies is an incredibly fun game to play with friends or family. It's definitely better than a lot of other games out there, however the game has a few fatal shortcomings.

    A: Music/Sounds

The music in this game is very similar to other entries in the Kirby franchise - pretty darn good. Some tracks feel like they've been re-used a few too many times over the years, but overall the music is relatively memorable and on-par to other games in the franchise.

As for sounds - well, Kirby games aren't really the type of games to need such incredible sounds - let's just put it that way.

7/10 - Good music, but really just feels like almost the same music as all of the other Kirby games. Sounds get the point across.

    B: Graphics

The graphics in this Kirby game are better than any other in the franchise. I'm glad that they've actually come back to making a Kirby game with a 'proper' art style, instead of the clay/yarn aesthetic they've been using. The graphics and art style of the levels throughout the game certainly give off a Kirby charm.

10/10 - Good art style, perfect graphics for a Kirby game.

    C: Gameplay

The gameplay in this game is extremely reminiscent of other Kirby titles. The mode selection is also very similar to other games in the series, containing the main story, a few mini-games, and the boss-rush/helper to hero modes.

The main story is very fun if played with friends. The final boss in particular is very fun and different to the conventional Kirby format - an extremely welcome addition. I'm not going to give out spoilers, so you're going to have to play the game yourself/see someone else play it to find out what exactly that is.

The mini-games are really just extra fluff to the game - it's easy to blow through all of the difficulties in the two mini-games which Kirby Star Allies gives you and be done within 15 minutes. I personally don't even see why they added these mini-games, perhaps it was to make it seem like there's more content than there truly is?

The Helper-To-Hero mode is fun - for a while. When I played through it, it took roughly two hours in total to complete the first time around. Essentially Helper-To-Hero mode is just replaying the main story levels throughout the game, but instead you play as an enemy/other NPC instead of Kirby. This is fun to play through once, but once you've beaten it, it feels very, very repetitive to play through again with another character - there simply isn't enough variation for me to go through this two hour mode with every single character.

The Boss Rush mode is a nice addition to the game, and is pretty much a staple to the franchise at this point. The difficulty slider is especially nice, but even at the highest difficulty I still managed to beat it on my second attempt - despite it being only my second attempt, this is still the most difficult thing in the game.

Overall, there are two main gripes with the gameplay:

Where is the content? I managed to 100% the game in 15 hours - this is minimal in comparison to other games. I understand Kirby games are short, but this feels like on a whole other level - especially with the price tag.

Where is the difficulty? This game is incredibly easy. I also understand that most Kirby games are easy, but I kind of wish that they had a difficulty slider for the main game as well as the Boss Rush mode, because it's incredibly difficult to actually die in the main game. I believe in my 15 hours of gametime I only died once or twice, and that was because I fell off of a cliff accidentally.

It's a shame that those gripes are there, because underneath those issues this game is very fun, especially to play with friends. It's no Breath of the Wild of the Kirby franchise, but it's definitely super fun. On your own though, I feel as if it could get a little stale.

5/10 - Fun gameplay with friends, rather boring when playing alone. The game is also too easy and too short.

    D: Story

The story in Kirby games are always those 'sweet and innocent' on the outside, but 'dark and mysterious' on the inside types. That's no exception here, with the main villain in the game being incredibly... bizarre, with very strange motives. I'm not going to go into too much detail, because to be honest I haven't done too much deep reading into this story - but it's interesting.

It's nice to see the ways that all of the plots in Kirby games are connected to one another. I wonder how the story will affect the Kirby universe in the next game?

If you're not interested into looking too much into it, then it's your regular old save Dreamland plot from a crazy bad guy looking to revive some beast.

9/10 - A surprisingly dark story, despite the positive atmosphere for the most part. A little hard to wrap your head around if you don't look too much into it.

So, in conclusion, this game gets a 7/10. It's very fun with friends, but is severely lacking in terms of content/difficulty.

Kirby Star Allies lacks just about everything that makes Kirby games fun: imagination, level design, charm, and worst of all, fun. The game really isn't fun because the game is so easy that you can beat it with your eyes closed. Now, Kirby games have never been difficult, but you always did have to actively try in order to beat the game, but not here, as many levels could be beaten with your eyes closed. But also, the levels lack creativity and charm, as they are very uninspired and generic. All of the levels feel like a massive step back from previous titles such as Return to Dreamland and Planet Robobot.

Now, the game isn't all bad, as the game be somewhat fun at times, and I'm sure that the multiplayer helps to enhance the experience. In addition, there are quite a few different modes to play, which helps add in some variety. Finally, the ability to combine copy abilities was a great addition that helped add in a little creativity.

Honestly, I recommend you skip this game, and I definitely don't recommend spending $60 on it. If you are really interested in trying it out, wait for a sale or price drop, but otherwise don't bother with this game, it really isn't anything special.

However, I only had the chance to play this game with the recent updates, which of course includes the museum to add characters like DeDeDe, Meta Knight, and past superstars to your team. While there are other newly added features as well, had I not had them at the beginning I think I would have been a bit disappointed with the game. Some of the new mechanics are interesting like buddy team ups and elemental weapon upgrades, but this is not enough content to release the game at a $60 price tag. That said, these new and free updates have picked this game up to the level expected of a a full-fledged Kirby title.

I certainly think Kirby Star Allies has received some warranted as well as unnecessary criticism, but the fact still remains that this is a game worth your time, especially if you're an old school Kirby fan. Enjoy playing through the fantastic visuals and please, please, please take the time to truly enjoy the soundtrack.

    Pros:
    + Presentation: NEARLY perfect.
+ Soundtrack: AMAZING! But then again, Kirby always has top notch soundtracks.
+ Graphics: ...Why does Kirby have such great graphics?
+ Game Modes: Story Mode was pretty fun, the minigames were good, and the post-game modes were amazing.
+ Story: I mean, it's not the best (obviously), but for a platformer, it's pretty good.

    Bad:
    - Difficulty: Oh wow, a Mario Odyssey fan complains about a game being too easy! Hahaha! No. Unlike Odyssey, I put almost no effort into the story mode. If it wasn't for co-op and a certain post-game challenge, it would be a WAY too easy game.
    - Length of Story Mode: As much as I liked the Story in the game, it was just way too short for me. That combined with the lack of difficulty puts this game down a bit.

Overall, Kirby Star Allies warrants an 8.7/10 from me. A great, yet flawed return to console for Kirby. (Also, I forgot to mention this was the first Kirby I've played since Super Star Ultra.)

Kirby Star Allies adorably comes into the Nintendo Switch collection. Despite its lack of story and its sadly quiet amount of story mode levels, Kirby fits between the major titles of the consoles with its incredible visual impression. The new allies AI are very nice to play with, but sometimes they bothered me by not doing the exact power combination I want. And in some levels, it seems that they do all the job and you're just here to wait for them to finish and get the collectibles, tiny bad point there. Even tho, the stages are pretty well done and the puzzles are maybe a little bit too easy.

The other "arena mode" have always been here and feel the same as always: too easy at first, frustrating in the end, but you're not forced to play it (not for the 100%...). The Let's Go Allies thing mode (don't remember how you call that) seems pretty cool and challenging for casual players and hardcore gamers. The tiny mini-games are fun for 2 games and then... I don't think I would go in these things to play with friends or even to have personal fun.

And yeah, playing those dream friends (such as Marx!) is a very pleasant experience if you're a long-time Kirby fan. And like we've seen in Super Mario Odyssey, common updates are always a new satisfaction for those Kirby fans (I mean, they're all epic!).

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It follows what you expect of a Kirby game pretty well. It starts fairly easy in terms of levels and puzzles but over time escalates. With the maximum difficulty being the optional content after the main campaign.

Single players will be relieved to know the partner AI is rather intelligent and can recognize when their abilities are used for something specific. However Co-op may be where you prefer if you wish to solve puzzles on your own. Be sure to turn hints off in the options menu.

The focus on mix-matching elements and abilities leads to a process of creatively solving puzzles in different ways as well as gives way to making best combinations of partners.

The bosses are an excellent mix of old and new. I love the generals designs and element themes and the main villain Hyness is hilarious if you remembered Zant's craziness from Zelda; Twilight Princess. Older bosses like Dedede and Meta Knight have new tricks as well. The final boss himself is a classic Kirby trope of something intimidating and admittedly creepy in some aspects. But the fight itself is incredible, mixing regular bossfight gameplay with a type of vehicle shooter.

The post-main story has two modes, a partner's only run through of the story levels with a unique final boss and the Kirby main-series staple; An Arena Mode boss rush. The Arena does a new decision of difficulty selection with a hidden *True Arena" at it's max difficulty.

My one and really only gripe is the abundance of extra lives. You can easily hit 100+ with just a normal playthrough if you're experienced in Kirby games even with a few occasional deaths. You can also point out the simplicity of solo mode when the AI for partners is pretty smart.

The game is still a fun time. Definitely recommend this for either single player or co-op experience.

At first, I thought the game was too short, I finished it in a weekend. But then I noticed I didn't find all the major puzzle pieces or all the buttons. I did that over this weekend, So I got 24+ hours

Star Allies manages to feel different from both the 3DS games and Return to Dreamland, while also being the best and arguably the only good 2D platformer for the Switch. Its short story length is subverted by the huge amount of post-game content, and the story mode's inherent replayability.

welp, Kirby star allies is a blast, I think this is more like a commemorative game, there are 3 new abilities, and they bring back some classics fro Kirby Super Star (Like the Yo-Yo, they brought back Yo-Yo...KIRBY BECAME NESS >:( ) is fella fun when you play with your friends, the puzzles aren't sooooo mind blowing, nah. in this game, Kirby got a new power, the friend heart, if you throw at an enemy, he will become your friend. Also, you can use your friend abilities to combine with yours! its Like in Kirby 64 and Squeak squad. Anyways, the only things I don't like in the game is the level design and the puzzles, the level design is...lame, I mean, not that I hate it, I just don't feel like this would be like a Kirby Planet Robobot Level for example, and the puzzles are too easy.
So the first thing you gotta do when you start the game, is turn off the tips, cause they will tell you exactly what you need to do in the puzzles, and since the puzzles are easy, the tips are kinda useless .

SO...I GIVE KIRBY STAR ALLIES A...9,4 out of 10

The game is awesome, its like a class of Kirby History, telling all the enemies, characters, and this graphics...we never saw a Kirby game in full HD! the composers (3 composers) made a magnificent sound track...if your a Kirby Fan that played games like Super Star, Robobot, Triple Deluxe and return to dream land, you will love this game.

Of course, bringing back the fan-favorite ability combining system was really great, though the way hal implemented them could’ve been done better. I dunno but a lot of the combonations weren’t different enough from the regular moves. The wind combos were always the most unique. I like how they made it way easier to choose wich abilities you want your helpers to have at any given time. Definitely a step up from superstar. Aesthetically, the game looks quite nice, going for an almost clay-like style. The level design was far less interesting than robobot & triple deluxe. Party due to there not being as many colectibles this time around. The game is also the easiest mainline Kirby game to date. Star allies also hands out way to many stars, so they’ve completely lost their value. It kind of feels like NSMB2 kirby edition. The bosses are also way to simplistic. None of them had ex forms until December, which is dissapointing. One thing I really like is how each of the dream friends had a lot of thought & care put into them. You basically have three people helping you which is a good thing if the difficulty was a bit higher, however you can do nothing and win thanks to the overpowered teammates you have. Playing with friends doesn’t change that either, I think the main problem is the levels. They are not bad but they are designed to be a cake walk which is pretty dumb. At least the bosses and music are nice, also the inclusion of extra modes is cool however they are pretty much repetitive as you go on. Kirby Star Allies is how not to make an easy game but the extra modes bosses and music make it kinda of unique, however it’s so easy that even the harder difficulty’s get stupidly boring and hard. Yeah this game was the first to implement Buff Dedede, and it gets a lot of credit for bringing back tons of old Kirby characters and making them playable, but the game itself is super short. It just feels like this game would have been perfect if it was a little longer and they added online co-op or something. es un buen juego cooperativo con mecanicas divertidas que mantiene muy bien el espiritu de kirby, si nunca o casi nunca has jugado un juego de plataformas y tienes un amigo con quien jugarlo seguro que vale la pena obtenerlo en una oferta, pero si eres un fan de kirby de la vieja escuela o de cualquier otro juego de plataformas vas a quedar algo decepcionado, el diseño de niveles eses un buen juego cooperativo con mecanicas divertidas que mantiene muy bien el espiritu de kirby, si nunca o casi nunca has jugado un juego de plataformas y tienes un amigo con quien jugarlo seguro que vale la pena obtenerlo en una oferta, pero si eres un fan de kirby de la vieja escuela o de cualquier otro juego de plataformas vas a quedar algo decepcionado, el diseño de niveles es mediocre por no decir tonto y ademas es un juego muy, muy facil si te gustan los juegos de plataformas y nunca has jugado un juego de kirby no te recomiendo para nada que empiezes con este. Beautiful. I love this game, even if it is really short. The 3 dlc are good and there is a lot of fan service.

Kirby Star Allies follows the lineage of his older brothers. A colorful universe, an OST worthy of the saga, a visually resulting Artistic direction, DLC en masse. Despite a new mechanism "the hearts" too falculative, this opus switch gives me lots of stars in my eyes.

Kirby Star Allies is a really fun Kirby game, but it does have some questionable design choices. Gameplay-wise, this game feels great. The co-op mode is a blast and Kirby's accessibility is always a plus. Kirby plays as he usually does. If you consume your enemies, you can gain their powers. Kirby can float by mashing the jump button which can make some areas pretty cheesable. Kirby's newKirby Star Allies is a really fun Kirby game, but it does have some questionable design choices. Kirby can float by mashing the jump button which can make some areas pretty cheesable. Kirby's new gimmick is that he can toss a friend heart to convert his foes into his very own paisanos. You can only have 4 friends at once though. Friends can turn into your converted enemies to join in the chaos. One major complaint I have is that there are no difficulty options in the main campaign, making this game stale to those who want a challenge or frustrating for those somehow having a rough time.

This game has a load of personality. It's incredibly charming and cute to see little details such as friends dancing with you after a well-deserved victory. The music is amazing and there are loads of peppy bangers to get your day started.

Perhaps the biggest problem about this game is that it just sorta feels like a downgrade to its successors on the DS. I'm not massive about fps, but DS Kirby games running at 60 fps and Star Allies running at 30 fps feels like a big downgrade. The pricing point of this game is also pretty ridiculous. 60 bucks for a game that'll only last you a few hours is laughable. Indie games that are 15 bucks have lasted me over hundreds of hours.

In conclusion, Kirby Star Allies is a great game for casual gamers and fans, but I'd recommend waiting for a price drop. Having a lovely day/night, folks!

Kirby Star Allies is fun. Kirby Star Allies is adorable. Kirby Star Allies is easy. At least in the base game. The game runs at 30fps which is fine, but the problem is that the menu’s run at 60fps. The game also looks really nice. Overall, a solid game, but not the game I was hoping for on the switch. THIS IS THE BEST GAME OF ALL TIME. The levels are perfectly designed, the bosses are incredible, the gameplay and combat is unrealistically good, and the replay ability is endless. Just buy it. Now.

Kirby Star Allies is a fun, chill platforming experience, best enjoyed while chilling with friends. The gameplay is not that challenging (which made it the perfect hangover time-killer for me and a buddy). Its funny to play together. It is also a joy to see Kirby get the graphic upgrades he and his world have deserved for some time in this game. However, it would have been nice to have just a little bit more of a challenge in this game. Or something to feel a little bit more in-depth. Sure, the completionist route does yield some more challenging gameplay -- and the final battles in the main campaign are where things finally get going -- but it would be nice to introduce more challenging options right at the start. Otherwise, gameplay can feel just a bit boring because it is too easy. Still, Kirby Star Allies is a fun game that does what Kirby does best, I suppose. I hope the next mainline Kirby installment goes for some bigger goals, though. Expand

Kirby Star Allies overall is a good game. It has absolutely excellent graphics. The game only runs at 30fps, but it's not very noticeable. However, the story mode (the main game mode) is very easy and short, the levels are repeatable and not creative. They are well designed and fun to play, but not interesting. Even finding all collectibles is easy and tedious. The game has a lot of fan service, which can sometimes be fun for players who are already fans of the franchise, but it often gets a little over saturated. The new game mechanic is being able to convert up to 3 enemies into CPU players to play alongside you, including several other major characters from previous Kirby games like King Dedede, Marx, Magolor and several others. In my opinion this was mainly done for fan service and is not used very well. They even make the game easier as they help to kill enemies and can even solve puzzles without the player doing anything. Certainly multiplayer is the main focus of the game, and it works very well. Players have plenty of space in the levels, and it's easy for casuals to just pick up the game and play, due to its simplicity. But like I said, the game can be repetitive when you consider the whole thing. However, alternative modes can offer something more to do, even if you're a more hardcore gamer. We have a mode where we go through a series of levels as quickly as possible using any of Kirby's helpers (including extra characters from older games), a mode where we go through a boss race, and another mode where we go through some Different stages to pick up collectibles solving puzzles that are really challenging, unlike the main mode puzzles. In conclusion, Kirby Star Allies is very average. The story mode is very simple and easy, which is good for casual gamers, but not for more hardcore gamers. However, the extra content makes it easier to find a little more fun. But it's mainly made for people who want a simpler experience or for people who already have some familiarity with the franchise. Yet somehow, this one of the dullest Kirby platformers since Dream Land 3. Level design is lackluster, the extra features are hardly compelling, and even with a roomful of friends the multiplayer experience seems to fall flat. Not a bad game by any means, but it does tend to feel uninspired. Expand

Kirby Star Allies makes the simplicity of smiling a lasting thing. The game is beautiful and has music that impresses by it's quality. The title is very amusing and if you can join three more friends, you will have one of the funniest experiences on the Nintendo Switch. It is an experience that should be appreciated in its entirety.
