Came back to metacritic just to review this underappreciated game. Would give it a 7.8/10 if I could. Karma Knight is just a solid hack n slash sidescroller similar to what you'd expect playing as Zero in Mega Man. The combat is very similar to Odin Sphere with a decent bit of chaining combos together. Combat animation and sound is extremely satisfying and gives weight to the action.Came back to metacritic just to review this underappreciated game. Would give it a 7.8/10 if I could. Karma Knight is just a solid hack n slash sidescroller similar to what you'd expect playing as Zero in Mega Man. The combat is very similar to Odin Sphere with a decent bit of chaining combos together. Combat animation and sound is extremely satisfying and gives weight to the action. There's also a touch of Specter Knight where you can home in on enemies and even grind rails later in the game. The platforming is also very satisfying. It is varied, kinetic, and fun. Youl'll air dash, grind rails, wall jump. The graphics look great, enemy design and variety is interesting, there are mini-bosses and real bosses culminating with a final boss who takes up the whole screen.
I played on casual and found the game a little too easy except when i got to the final boss. There is normal and casual to start, then you unlock hard mode and new game+ when you beat the game. There are two characters to choose from when you start, just like Mega Man X4, but i didn't notice a tremendous difference in playstyle.
In addition to comboing, there's a bit of customization as well. You'll find talismans that act as unique special attacks, element runes to power up abilities, and gems that give you passive buffs. You'll collect souls as you kill enemies and open treasure chests, and these souls can buff your weapons, health, stamina, and combos.
The story is completely non-sensical, but who plays these games for their deep stories?
Cons are few and far between. The games a bit on the short side. Can be beaten in under 5 hours, but I spent $2 and change on it so I'm not complaining. When you're wall jumping, there's a sound when you touch the wall to signify you touched it. This becomes a problem in segments when you have to rapidly wall climb because you need to go faster than the sound indicates. Once you realize you don't have to wait for the sound to wall jump, you can beat these sections.
Other than that, I wish there was more weapon variety. Only two weapons to choose from, and they don't do remarkably different things. Most of it is just nitpicking.

Tl;dr This is a solid hack n slash sidescroller with solid platforming, decent customization, good art style, and fun combat
