As far as visual novels go, Iwakura Aria is very impressive. It's immersive, addictive, and mystifying. Each character stands out on their own without overshadowing anyone, not even the titular Aria, and Ichiko serves as an excellent protagonist and storyteller. At 10-15 hours, the length of Iwakura Aria sits comfortably without feeling as if it's cut anything important out, while also not dragging its feet and feeling unnecessarily padded out. Although the story can get dark at times, it doesn't dip too far into being too uncomfortable, while still being grippingly suspenseful. Iwakura Aria feels like one of those stories that clings onto you, and you onto it, not wanting it to end and desperate to find out how it all plays out.

All of this might sound critical of Iwakura Aria, and I guess in one way I am disappointed in this, but only because it could have very easily been another House in Fata Morgana. The intensity of the themes are there. The art is right up there with the best VN art I’ve ever had the pleasure to see. The writing is beautifully eloquent, and this is a rare visual novel that I would happily pick up as a proper novel, where it would stand strong on any bookshop’s shelves against any of the literature on there. Even as it is, Iwakura Aria is better than 99% of the other visual novels out there. It’s essential as-is, and right on the cusp of being a masterpiece, and that’s ultimately why I’m disappointed that it doesn’t quite get there.

MAGES. Inc. delivered and then some with Iwakura Aria. What’s within is an electric and rich visual novel story, a page-turner that is filled to the brim with memorable and beautiful prose as it expertly weaves its themes. Better yet, it sands off all the rough edges of the genre with quality-of-life improvements. Where there’s sacrifice and power found within the halls of the Iwakura mansion, there’s also love, adoration and devotion. Whether it’s in protagonist Ichiko’s investment in the illustrious Aria or the player following along at every beat, you’re both in for an artful and magnificent ride.
