Let's start from the only really amazing feature in this game: the setting and the art direction. It's stunning, beautiful. I found myself taking a lot more screenshot than most games I've played, every part of the game looks like a painting and it's a pleasure for your eyes. Everything else is kinda...standard? It's an average metroidvania. My bad, a BELOW average one. After 30 years ofLet's start from the only really amazing feature in this game: the setting and the art direction. It's stunning, beautiful. I found myself taking a lot more screenshot than most games I've played, every part of the game looks like a painting and it's a pleasure for your eyes. Everything else is kinda...standard? It's an average metroidvania. My bad, a BELOW average one. After 30 years of similar games in this genre one would expect hit detection to be working, weapon range to be tested and this is not NES era anymore, no need to have leaps of faith at random and enemies/bullets spawning mid-air. Also, jumping is extremely poorly balanced. I've often found platforms/hooks etc too far for a single jump, but too close for a double-jump, resulting in mid-air randomic manoeuvring, often resulting in death due to a very very low jump/hooking precision. In general, the greatest letdown of this game are the controls, and I have often felt frustrated for this huge series of minor problems that made the gameplay irritating. It would be a 6/10

I've played it on the switch lite, so for this console i have to add the real reason for the 4/10 vote: the frame rate often drops to 5/8 fps, for ENTIRE sections, which is not ideal while you're fighting a boss and half your inputs aren't read and you can barely move your character. I honestly can't understand nor accept that in 2024 games are ported so poorly from one console to another.

A visual treat in search of better gameplay, Itorah is an action-platformer that wears a metroidvania skin. The eight or so hours needed to reach the end of this journey are boring, the main heroine feels clunky to control, and the frame rate will make you nauseous. The strongest moments here will come from admiring still frames, not playing through them.

And that’s really disappointing, since, based on its looks alone, it feels like Itorah should stand out more. Unfortunately, all the effort here went into those visuals, and once you get beyond those, you’re left with a game that’s not very fun to play.
