    Inspector Waffles genuinely surprised me. I expected a good pixel art noir, but I didn’t expect to fall in love with a great buddy cop murder mystery. It’s also one of the few point and clicks that felt optimized for the Switch, a rare treat for those who enjoy the genre on this console. Featuring witty writing, a loveable cast, and even a secret ending to sniff out, the only mystery here is why wouldn’t you want to pick up Inspector Waffles?

    Despite the controls and the graphics, Inspector Waffles is all about memorable characters, a solid narrative and well-designed, logical adventure puzzles which manage to strike a rare balance in difficulty. Sit down in front of the tv with a glass of warm milk and enjoy this purrrfectly comforting adventure.

    Ultimately if you’re after a new point and click adventure on the Switch you could do worse than Inspector Waffles – it’s well presented and has some great moments – but it still falls short of the best the genre has to offer on the system.

    Maybe I’m just a sucker for a regular stream of puns when they’re dangled in front of me often, but having played quite a number ofMaybe I’m just a sucker for a regular stream of puns when they’re dangled in front of me often, but having played quite a number of point-and-click adventures on Switch that started strong but then lost steam, Inspector Waffles managed to be an entertaining treat. Sure, the silly version of detective noir has been done, and plenty of cat and dog humor has been done as well even, but there’s some charm here mixed with a well-implemented interface that really works. You’ll pick up the flow of how things work pretty quickly, be asked to collect a reasonable number of items from the environment, and then work out various puzzles requiring either straight or combined use to progress… and, for the most part, in general it’s pretty smooth sailing while keeping you amused throughout. The low-res pixel style does have it suffer at times for clarity in what you may be picking up or interacting with, but as a whole this is a well-designed adventure that feels quite at home on the Switch.

    This review contains spoilers, click full review link to view. Inspector Waffles is developed by Goloso Games and published by Hitcents. It’s a point and click adventure game set in a world where animals live and interact with each other just like humans. You play as a detective and chief to solve a murder case of a rich cat. The game is minimalist: no walking, no voice acting. It also supports touch control on Nintendo Switch. And if you love pixel art, it is the right place.

    To solve puzzles, you just use an object and sometimes you need to combine two objects to make the right object. At some points you will ask your partner — dog to use his skill for the puzzles as well. And in order to progress the story, you will find yourself talking to different animals and using note and object clues. What makes the game interesting is you can choose an easy mode where important things are highlighted during conversations. And when the detective is stuck, he can call his mom — ex-detective for help. As it is a point and click game where you have to backtrack a lot, this does not work all the time but is still helpful, nonetheless. Plus, the puzzles are logical most often than not, so you don’t have to worry much. And I can say that the writing is nothing groundbreaking but it is very clever throughout and can give you a smile here and there. It is a detective focused story, so you would always love to find out what’s next. The music is very jazzy, which is a good thing for the atmosphere.

    However, the game mechanic was a bit confusing at first, for me at least. But I could get a hang of it quickly. Another problem was the objects were not distinctive enough. With the big pixels in the game, I missed some objects as they blended in with the background. So I failed to notice if they were clickable. However, this didn’t hinder my experience that much.

    Conclusion

    If you love a detective story with animals especially cats and dogs in it, and you can appreciate the game for what it is and what it offers and nothing more, Inspector Waffles could be your game. For the amount of fun it gave me, I gave it 7.5/10.    … Full Review »
