Actionpacked game with an incredible story, being a prequel to Breath of the Wild it had alot to live up to and it did that and more.
It's definitely more a Legend of Zelda than a Dynasty warriors game, but the dynamic really works because the story makes the battles you wage much more personal.

This is an absolutely phenomenal game, filled with content and packed with the sort of action that you'd expect from a game detailing the events leading up to the Calamity that happened 100 years before Breath of the Wild. Playing as multiple characters from BOTW (along with a few very surprising additions), you get to experience a rich and immersive story on par with the original Hyrule Warriors and some of the better stories of the LOZ franchise. The gameplay is a mix of Dynasty Warriors and BOTW, but contains a lot more LOZ-style gameplay than the original Hyrule Warriors did. This game also gives you an opportunity to become more attached to the characters than BOTW did, especially considering you can play as many of them.

However, no game is perfect, and Age of Calamity DOES have a couple of issues with it. Notably, framerate. When using attacks that take up a lot of space on the screen or facing a LOT of enemies at once, the game tends to lag to a decent degree (but not to unplayable rates).

The second major caveat that Age of Calamity takes is the very gameplay itself. IF you are looking for a game with gameplay akin to BOTW, then I'd advise waiting for BOTW 2 to come out...however, if you enjoy frantic and fast-paced hack 'n slashes (and don't mind it becoming repetitive on occasion), then I'd highly recommend picking up this game, not only for its story, but for the ability to live the Calamity and be your favorite characters from BOTW!

It get very repetitive and nothing from the prequel story is coming spectacular. Its nice to see the characters back but i dunno why, i found them to be impostors compared to what they was in the Zelda Breath of the Wild experience. Maybe i expected too much from this title. Lets be honest, the marketing was bad on this one.. when i started playing i was like "oh my god.. not what i expected at all.. it really play more like an arcade game that anything else". The game would be a 9/10 for me personally, but is going down as a 4 for how poorly the game runs. I don't care how great your game could be in theory if it can't flipping run. I don't care how great your game could be in theory if it can't flipping run. When there is as much going on on the screen as there is in this game, and it encourages you to react to things very quickly (Flurry rush), having the framerate consistently dumpster itself is simply unacceptable. And the key word there is consistently. I am happy to accept rare framerate dips in exchange for a nicer looking game. But in multiplayer particularly, any time there is a lot of action on screen, IE the times where you most need a clear idea of what is going on, the framerate completely tanks. This is unacceptable and Nintendo should be ashamed of themselves. For a company that traditionally has had such finely polished games, this is a huge black mark. You know your own consoles capabilities better than anyone. There is no excuse for this.

However, if you are someone that intends to the play the game entirely solo and that's what you care about, I would rate this at a solid 7. Because the framerate is substantially more stable in single player. It's still far from perfect. But it doesn't get laughable dumpster fire low. And if in the future there is a release of this game on more powerful hardware that can actually run the game smoothly 100% of the time, I'd give it a 9. It's got a lot of really great mechanics for a warriors game that shake up the genre and make it less spammy than ever. Lots of different ways to mix up combos and actions that make it feel like more like... I don't want to say Nioh because that invokes the wrong expectations. But an action combat system that has a lot more to it than simply mashing light attack and heavy attack. Story is very dragged out and not the best written it could be, but for a warriors title its absolutely next level. Lots of great fan service in there for Zelda fans.

Overall I am having a great time with it in single player, and if they had just made the concessions required in the graphics department for the game to actually run smoothly, I'd call Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity a homerun. So if tanking to 10FPS anytime the action gets heavy in multiplayer is acceptable to you, or you never plan on doing multiplayer at all, I would recommend this game to a warriors fan, and also a Zelda fan so long as the core formula that makes up a warriors game isn't a turn off for you.

In short, this story takes place in a separate timeline where things played out a bit differently than they did in BOTW. As such, this raises questions as to the game's canon status. I'm not sure why Nintendo felt it was necessary to mislead people (except to maximize profits, of course) because I'd totally be down to see what could have been.

Anyway, this game is not bad at all, it just isn't great. The story - while being a bit predictable at points (and not at others) - is an overall satisfying story. I certainly liked it a lot. As I mentioned before, this plot takes place in a separate timeline. A miniature guardian goes back in time from the original BOTW timeline to warn Zelda and everyone of the coming calamity and everything from then on plays out differently. There was never a point where I wanted to stop playing because of the story. I found it very interesting and I wanted to know what happened next every step of the way.

The best thing about this game is its music. As with many Zelda games, the music is very well orchestrated and fits every moment well. They took many of the tracks from BOTW and made different arrangements for them. My favorite is Vah Ruta's theme.

The gameplay also isn't bad per say, but it isn't engaging at all. It is a horde battle / hack n' slash sort of thing and its excitement will not last you through the game. It gets boring pretty quickly as it never evolves in any significant way. It' just you running from point A to point B and then C, D, etc. hacking through unrealistic amounts of enemies and killing big mini-boss ones. What's worse is that the game expects you to go back to these missions many times to grind for resources so that you can fill side objectives on the world map that grant small bonuses. There is an ungodly amount of these side objectives showered onto the map like a Ubisoft game. It's quite overwhelming and made me furious for a bit at how much time I would have to put in to check off everything.

Overall, I rather enjoyed this game. It does have its flaws with gameplay, but I kept at it because I liked the story. It was fun to get a better glimpse of what Hyrule was like before the calamity. I liked seeing the characters again and I also liked the new ones. I would definitely recommend this game to any LOZ fan but I would caution others who just like the series as this title will be a 'hit or miss' for them.

Many people, including yours truly were incredibly excited, I vaguely remember seeing Jim Sterling verbally blow his load at least a few times on Twitter when the game was first announced. When the game was released in 2014, it didn’t set the world on fire but it was a great new spin on the Zelda franchise and the landmark collaboration was enough to consider it for our Game of the Year in 2014.

Six years on and Hyrule Warriors is back but this time it is an even bigger deal, why the original game as almost like a greatest hits compilation featuring characters and settings from the entire history of the Zelda series, this new iteration, Age of Calamity is set up as a prequel to Breath of the Wild, set 100 years in the past before Link went into his century long sleep, only this time we are introduced to a brand new character in essentially an Ancient version of BB8.

This adorable little robot appears in Zelda’s room right when things turn to absolute **** in Hyrule, only for him to open a portal and travel into the past essentially giving us a whole new split timeline theory…..greaaattttt. Like most Warriors game you aren’t just playing as one character but you are able to select from a whole range including Impa, Zelda and the four champions Mipha, Urbosa, Revali and Datuk. While it stings seeing all these characters knowing what eventually falls them all, every character has a distinct fighting style with Mipha’s water style and Zelda primarily using ancient technology. Also, despite appearing as a youngling, it seems we have some more time travel occurring as everyone’s favourite fishboy, Sidon, is playable.

Age of Calamity seemingly fixes all those niggling little qualms that people had with Breath of the Wild, first and foremost there is no weapon degradation. It was without a doubt one of the most frustrating parts of the game, constantly having to find a new sword halfway through a battle. While you still collect numerous items, food and weaponry in Age of Calamity you really only address that between missions where you can sell or even fuse loose weapons together. Even frustrating enemies from the original game like Lynels have been essentially neutered here to the point that you can easily defeat them,a lot of aspects from Breath of the Wild have been brought over here including Flurry Rush, Paraglider, even the freaking Koroks.

Another return is the map of Hyrule which is where you select the levels, but there is so much more including little side missions and services that help upgrade all aspects of your characters. There has clearly been a lot of love and detail put into what is essentially a Breath of the Wild prequel, even small things like being able to play with Japanese audio. No offence to Patricia Summerset but her attempt at a Faux English accent is just as cringey this time around as it was in the original.

While combat is fairly standard for a Warriors game, Normal Attack, Heavy Attack combos and Special Moves, lock on has been placed on pushing down the R-Stick and there really can’t be any more of a complicated or out of place button then that. You can have up to 4 characters in your party during battles and are able to seamlessly switch between them at any time, this helps in traversing the map quicker. We also see the Ancient mechanics make a return, bombs make a comeback with even explosive barrels all over the place which make for a satisfying clearing of areas. But the other three just may as well not be there, the Ice really just amounts to creating a platform to paraglide off, the magnet just picks up blocks to wack enemies with and stasis is pretty much nothing, you were able to send trees flying in Breath of the Wild, now good luck with Stasis can even take care of a big Moblin.

But any issues are completely washed away when you pilot the Divine Beasts, I will just repeat that for the people in the back You. Pilot. DIVINE. BEASTS! I could have started and ended my review right there and called it a day, there are segments where you get to pilot all four divine beasts with the Champions, where you can shoot, trample, rain destruction where ever you go and send killer death beams that annihilate everything in its path. I mean, what else do I need to say? these segments alone are worth picking up this sequel.

Hyrule Warriors 2 isn’t Breath of the Wild 2, but it is a damn fine morsel that could tie you over just a little while you wait.

Each character has their own unique play style for you to find and play with. The music is absolutely beautiful. I love the Champions soundtracks on Chapter 2. Omg, they are just perfect! I have not completed the game yet so I'm unsure if this stays, but I'm up to Chapter 4 and personally, I really like the story. It's been slightly predictable due to knowing the history of BotW, but I'm loving the lore I'm getting out of this. Like I said, I've not completed the game, so I wonder if I'll still feel the same once I do.

Now don't get me wrong, this game isn't perfect. The FPS isn't as smooth as I would want it to be. For example, on the first level, when I went to fight the Lizalfos, it started to lag quite a bit, though I was able to defeat the enemies without any problem. And the barriers. Them barriers are so annoying. When playing as Revali, you'd expect to be able to fly over the fences and even small rocks, it blocks you from flying over, which I guess is to make it fair for all characters, but considering he's a bird, you'd think he'd be able to fly over things. And personally, I don't think the graphics aren't as great as compared to BotW, which I expected but I wanted to be absolutely amazed.

It's very similar to Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition. I know that if you like that game, you will find some fun in this. I'm missing the short maps where you had to go and play as a unique characters and you'd win characters and special rewards that'd help you to advance, but I still think it's a pretty decent game and I'd recommend waiting for the price to drop a little, but I still think you should pick it up if you're looking for BotW lore or are a Zelda/Dynasty Warriors fan in general.

Still really fun to play and has tonnes of content and replay value, but the big problem is LAG. In any hack and slash game, lag and dropped frames is such a disappointment, especially since the original Hyrule Warriors ran better. The culprit is almost definitely the BOTW-style graphics, which admittedly does look gorgeous, but the performance trade-off wasn't worth it. It's not enough to ruin the game, but it's noticeable enough to be annoying.
Finally, the story is complete baloney. It was advertised as a prequel, but it becomes clear very quickly that it's not one. The real crime though is that the direction they take it in is not interesting or well explained, the ending will leave you frustrated because you don't know wtf is going on.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Juste excellent.

The gameplay is rock solid. Best Musou game I've played by a pretty good margin. They handled some issues BotW had with limited enemy variety by inserting elemental versions of existing enemies and that was a nice way to give things a little more variety. The uses of the runes and Wizzrobe wands gives combat an extra dimension that's a total blast.

In general this game was lovingly constructed from top to bottom. The soundtrack is amazing. The characters all have their fun gameplay eccentricities.

Overall, it's basically everything I wanted out of it.

When the trailers of games out, I only thought that we can play the champions, Zelda and Impa, but the real playable characters surprise me. It is so many, even Master Kohga can be played.
The gameplay is good too, though I'm not a fan of warrior type of game, I enjoy this game so much. You have so much things to do, so much combo and you will not be bored when playing for a long time.
Of course, the best thing I love about this game is the story. This is a happy ending for Link and Zelda, where they defeated Calamity Ganon and saved all people. If the story of BOTW shows me the loneliness of Link and the pain he and Zelda bearing after 100 years, this game shows me the friendships, relationships that give Link and Zelda power. So happy to see Link always have connections with the others. And at last, this game leaves me in a question "So the timeline is split again :))))"
Love this game so much, it helps me to feel the world of BOTW again when waiting for BOTW 2.

I don't want to spoil the game if you're on the fence, but this is a game you should buy for the holidays and savor until the new year. Nintendo really managed to undersell this one with the lack of advertising. The developers poured their heart and soul into this game and it shows.

Overall, Age of Calamity is an incredibly charming package that can thrill and excite you with it's tragic story and refined 1 vs 100 gameplay. On top of that it has enough content to keep you hooked through more and more of an almost addictive gameplay loop.

Gran ost, gran historia, gran Gameplay.

The demo was already good but playing through the story is simply magical. The art style is beautiful and based on BOTW’s Hyrule, voice acting is well performed, the music is outstanding and the combat, that could have become a bit repetitive since it’s a musou, is actually refreshing with constant new moves and attacks being delivered. 10/10. The gameplay is, again, very average. The original Hyrule Warriors was a more complete and more fun to play Warriors game than this game, which feels like a hybrid between a Warriors game and BotW. It is way less expansive than Hyrule Warriors, it has les characters, and the story is not better... it's just canon. That is why I feel it ends up being more of a money grab, because chances are, you'll buy the game even if you believe the reviews that say it is very average.

Repurposing the BotW map into a mash-up of levels, character skill trees and shops, just makes things convoluted, and tedious.

The most important thing to remember is that this isn't just a legend of zelda game, this is also a Hyrule warriors game which people have seemed to forget when playing it. Dont expect a normal zelda experience. Its a fun hack and slash with great elements from breath of the wild including mechanics and story. there are wonderful little nods to breath of the wild (story wise). I haven't experienced any glitches so far and the frame rate holds decently well for the amount of enemies that are on screen at once. if you have kids then they can play co op. if you just flat out hack and slash games of any kind then this probably isn't for you, but if you don't mind it and love legend of zelda, then you will enjoy it. it is so much fun playing as our favorite champions, fun to laugh at the silly things they say, great to see how they interact with their people and our main characters, and of course the divine beasts. ive only played 1 warriors game prior to this (hyrule warriors) but had no issue figuring out controls, combos and all that. in my opinion, age of calamity is a massive improvement from hyrule warriors. having the additional things like the map, training camps, donating items to help the people of hyrule etc are all welcome additions in my book. How does this game have this high of a score. It's a **** disaster. This game literally doesn't even work on the switch. But the biggest issue is that the story doesn't make any sense. It was marketed as a prequel to Breath of The Wild, which is one of my favorite games of all time. This is not a prequel, far from it. If they said it took place in an alternate reality, i'd buy it. Fun combat and a lot of unique characters, gorgeous art style and amazing music, but it's way too repetitive, the new storyline is dumb and overall pouring your time into it feels a bit worthless. I did have fun with it, but maybe the warriors games just aren't for me.

The story and decent combat is what made the game somewhat bearable, the performance is absolutely laughable and borderline unplayable at times.

Koei Techmo and Nintendo should be ashamed of themselves for releasing the game in this state.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Is it canon? Yes, surprisingly. But it's not a prequel in the way you'd expect. It's more of a tangential narrative loosely explained enough to let you put the pieces together yourself, but still leaves lots of questions to be answered by the time it's finished. I'd love to see a DLC, because the elements that aren't explained so clearly are the backstory of this new villainous character Astor and his harbinger guardian (or Harbinger Ganon). Granted, this may be part of the base game to some degree - I've only beaten the main story, but have yet to complete all the side-missions that pop up after you beat the game. At first, I was a little disappointed that it wasn't the prequel we were expecting and rather or 'fix the past' sort of story, but the story they devised is genuinely moving as its own standalone narrative.

The gameplay and the story seemed to be at odds with each other. For instance, Zelda broods about being unable to awaken her powers and being worthless despite literally wiping out thousands of enemies with her Sheikah Slate. However, I don't think the Warriors-style gameplay is necessarily canon to the story being told. It's not until later in the game when you get bombarded by powerful enemies that you actually feel overrun, though the narrative would suggest that the thousands of lizafos and bokoblins are a huge threat (when in reality you plow through them like pillows). Such said, if this were Breath of the Wild, the odds would truly be stacked against you in any of these scenarios.

The gameplay itself is a massive improvement over the last Hyrule Warriors. The enemies are more responsive, there are quick button combos to select the right weapon to weaken your enemy (whereas the first HW would have you slowly scroll through all your items to find the right one for the moment), there's less scrambling to protect allied bases from falling while you're just trying to progress through the mayhem, and it just feels really good to play. What isn't fun are the Divine Beast segments. There's maybe some catharsis to decimating everything at first, but the damn things move so slowly that it's a slog getting through their segments. Revali's Van Medoh is especially grueling because it never stops moving, so if you miss a big group of monsters, you have to slowly turn around to get them. At least Urbosa's Vah Naboris has a running attack that can be spammed. The other broken aspect is playing as Teba; the camera goes bonkers whenever you attack with him so that you can't even tell what you or anything else is actually doing on screen. Fortunately, there are only a handful of side-missions where you have to play as him and no main missions where you're required to.

I've only played this game on handheld mode, so I rarely noticed framerate drops (except when I did special attacks when three guardians and dozens of minor enemies were on screen at the same time). Granted, I hardly notice framerate issues. Ocarina of Time ran at 20 fps and that still runs as smooth as butter to my old man eyes.

This is an absolute insult to the Zelda Franchise.
Terrible combat, bad characters, lifeless environments this is a step backwards from breath of the wild wouldn't recommend.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is a suprisingly great game. Even if it doesn't add a lot to the already great story and lore of "Breath of the Wild", it packs gameplay that is fun in this great world and brings a credible and (in my opinion) well-written prologue story. Secondly, oof... it does suffer from some pretty bad resolution and frame rate downgrades that show it was either not quite ready for launch or the Switch itself really isn't capable of handling it. If a patch cleans up the performance or a Switch revision allows it to perform to its fullest, it could be a review worth revisiting.

The best warriors game ever made. which makes sense since nintendo helped with it. it is so much fun and detailed. it being zelda makes it that much better. i never really cared about the fps drops. only happens when a lot of things happen on screen at once and it really isn't an issue. just in general, great gameplay, great story and all around a great game.

La historia del juego y su conexión al universo de Breath of the Wild, hacen de Age of Calamity una joya de la saga Zelda. Su jugabilidad es muy atrayente y queda perfecto con la temática que se vive en Hyrule en esa época.

Age of Calamity is a good hack and slash game that provides a welcome opportunity to jump back into the world of Breath of the Wild, albeit with a completely different style of gameplay.

For the most part, I enjoyed the over the top, large scale battles that are characteristic of the Warriors franchise. Getting into the flow of it and mowing down hundreds of enemies with satisfying combos is great fun. There's usually plenty of cannon fodder on screen for you to toy with, but there's plenty of larger enemies too which require a bit more of your attention.

Age of Calamity features a healthy roster of playable characters that you unlock as you progress through the game, and they all have fairly different movesets and unique traits. I found myself sticking to the few characters I could do the most damage with - Link, Impa and Teba - but I'm sure different people will gravitate more to others.

Playable Divine Beast sections break up the core gameplay loop and although they're mostly a decent diversion, the Vah Rudania (the Gorons' Divine Beast) quests are a bit frustrating because of its poor blocking capabilities.

Unfortunately, Age of Calamity starts to wear a bit thin after a while. It's not a short game, and I found its gameplay too mindless and repetitive to hold my interest for long periods of time. The oftentimes sparse checkpoint system only serves to exacerbate this issue. The side content is particularly egregious as much of it doesn't even have any story to support it - it has some context but is mostly devoid of any proper narrative. It's good that it's there for when you want a quick bit of action, but it could've been better.

In terms of story, Age of Calamity isn't the prequel I was expecting, and it instead introduces a separate timeline. It's tone is also perhaps a bit lighter than I thought it'd be. Taken on its own merits, the story is okay. It's nice to see the characters we grew to love from Breath of the Wild again, and fighting against the Great Calamity with them was a treat. That said, I think a proper prequel could've told a much more mature, tragic story. Seeing the downfall of the Champions could've made for some excellent storytelling, and it could've been a bold, refreshing move to let us lose for once.

Overall, this is a fairly good, enjoyable title, which perhaps unfairly has to live in the shadow of Breath of the Wild. Its connection to one of my favourite ever games is simultaneously why I expected more from it but also a big reason I liked it. If, like me, you're a big Zelda fan, just know to temper your expectations a bit regarding the story - as said, it's more of a 'what if' than a prequel. For me though, I still enjoyed Age of Calamity despite the gameplay sometimes feeling too grindy for my tastes. It's a cool, exaggerated hack and slash with a strong range of playable characters and, of course, a great soundtrack.

If you understand that going forward, here's some other miscellaneous notes.

    - The gameplay is a bit faster paced than the first Hyrule Warriors, but this also makes the game more confusing and overwhelming as a result (because they need to put more on-screen to compensate).
    - The framerate, pop-in, and resolution are seriously poor. The game does not run smoothly or look good in general gameplay. This is especially noticeable in handheld mode. This is very damning for an action game, especially a faster paced one.
    - The button layout is really awkward and differs from the previous Hyrule Warriors. Special moves are weirdly convoluted to pull off and dodging is on what I'd consider to be the wrong button. It makes everything feel needlessly clunky and not very fun.
    - The BotW mechanics feel very shoehorned, and in addition, dumb down the Musou gameplay rather than mesh with it. This means you're getting less Hyrule Warriors than before, which is a damn shame.

That said, the characters, acting, and writing are still solid. The BotW charm is still there, even if there's no direct relation to that game. The music is better than a Musou has ever been. And you still get a portion of the appeal that any Musou would have. But it's not one I can particularly recommend and it's one Zelda fans should steer well clear of.

If you are looking for a Musou of quality, I'd recommend Dragon Quest Heroes 2 or the first Hyrule Warriors instead.
