Everything Breath of the wild should've been and actually enables you to care about the champions. Music is far better, exploration is so much more satisfying, combat is amazing and especially considering as weapons don't break.

Weapon levelling is a nice addition and makes for some interesting perks and abilities. Character combos are actually amazing, even on the low levels.

Characters I thought were annoying in Breath of the wild were actually awesome in this. Only grip is that there wasn't any deployability after finishing everything on the map unlike the first Hyrule warriors where illustration pieces which were unlocked by killing skulltalas would open up the illustration map which would have more stages / bonuses / outfits and weapons as well as characters to unlock.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. When I first played the demo of this game, I was worried. The frame rate was all over the place, and just in general the game didn't run very well at all, and wasn't very fun but when I got this game... I enjoyed it. So anyway I'm going to talk about the gameplay first, and then transition into talking about the story. The gameplay is weird for me, I like it in some ways because it feels really satisfying to kill enemies, and of course things like Moblins, and Big Bokoblins, Lizalfos, and other stronger enemies, but on the other hand it feels kind of unnecessarily time-consuming. Like when you fight malice guardians towards the end of the game, it feels super tedious, and kinda blows honestly, but overall I still kinda like it. The gameplay makes this game fun, and satisfying, but I will say that'd I'd prefer if the levels had more healing items in them, I played it on normal difficultly, and I had a lot of troubles on specific missions, just because my health was simply to low, and couldn't be healed back up, but anyway that's just a small thing, so let's talk about... THE STORY, and honestly it was also weird for me. I've heard a lot of fans of this game say that this is supposed to be a cutesy what-if scenario, but my problem is that the game isn't presented as that at all. This game kinda ruins BOTW for me, and I hate that, BOTW is one of my favorite games of all-time, but when I saw the ending my stance kind of changed, it felt like the timeline was being split into 2 pieces, similar to what happens in OOT, and honestly... that's pretty cool, and I kinda like that. What I really loved about this story though, was the middle portion of it. This story does a lot of character explanations about the champions, which I greatly appreciate, and when the game wanted to be funny, it was. All that it took was having a cute interaction to make me laugh, and this game has tons of them. While by no means is this game perfect I will say that I enjoyed what I played of it. I still prefer the original Hyrule Warriors, but I can still look back on this game with respect. Also, quick thing, if you're wondering about technical performance, it isn't as bad as some describe, the frame rate isn't great though, in fact, I had to change my camera speed to slow, just to keep it stable, it's still playable by all means, and the pop-in that occurs is pretty mild, this game never feels "ugly", and most of the people review bombing are exaggerating as usual. If you like BOTW, and Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition, then this is a worthwhile purchase.

Overall: It isn't perfect, but it's fun and has a decent story attached to it
Also btw the soundtrack is amazing, it truly helped me love this game even at its worst

The story and decent combat is what made the game somewhat bearable, the performance is absolutely laughable and borderline unplayable at times.

Koei Techmo and Nintendo should be ashamed of themselves for releasing the game in this state.

Overall the combat mechanic of every character is well thought out and blend well with their combat behavior in the main BOTW but I don't know, the game just not able to grab me or attract me more.

Overall a great type of warrior game than the original warrior game but my favorite still Persona 5 Striker. That game completely does and doesn't feel like a warrior game at the same time which is unique to me.

I think it was an entertaining game. It might not be as entertaining if you haven't played “Breath of the Wild” but no matter what, you get many hours of good play. I can't give it a 10 though, as I think, there are a little bit too many boring quest and it is impossible to remember all the different combat-combinations. But overall a game I can recommend.

Although, we should not talk bad about its gameplay, it's in the other genre than the rest of the games from Zelda franchise and yet it's a nice experience. What are you waiting for? Get over there, it's slaughter time!! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Juste excellent.

If you really liked this game, play zombeer, you will have more fun, I passed the game is bad, this game is the same as romeron did to daikatana, this game is valid in this game is an empty inflated balloon game, there is a problem in the game itself ui screen is terrible controls, the graphics are already bad, but the game is too much fps There is only one good side of this game and it tells the story better unlike the other game. The cinematics are nice, but it is caught in my mind, there are new champions in their time, but the old champions are not old, nothing has changed, man 100 years ago, there is a symptom in people who also have wii u. There is a game and that game is better and cheaper in terms of graphics and gameplay, this game has been a poor quality flash of the cheap hyrule warriors. Expand

I think its a good game, way better than WiiU HW because the action feels more solid and, subjective 100%, the great love I have for BOTW. I was quite disappointed when I discovered its not set in the same timeline as BOTW but I imagine they are saving it for BOTW2. All in all, I recommend it strongly. Muuuuuch better than Hyrule Warriors, but still very flawed.

The core mechanics are good (if a little clunky at times), but what really kills this game and prevents it from being better is the REPETITION. Talk about Warriors Fatigue! The core mechanics are good (if a little clunky at times), but what really kills this game and prevents it from being better is the REPETITION. Talk about Warriors Fatigue! There's just too much of everything: Too many characters, too many meaningless filler side quests that you only really do to level up or gather materials (as an illustration, there are only 20 story missions and almost TEN TIMES the amount of side missions), too many weapons that you collect, WAAAY too many icons on the map that demand completion (every time you get rid of one, it seems like 3 new ones pop up, like a Hydra in video game form) etc. etc.

Framerate is dogsh**, but I think everybody knows that already. Still pretty baffling that they released the game in this state and haven't patched it since. Seems like they just don't care.

The story... Don't even get me started man. This had so much potential as a prequel to one of the best video games of all time. They could have told a harrowing, gripping tale of Hyrule's downfall. Instead, what did they do? Used the cheapest trick in the book and resorted to time-travel/alternate universe bullsh** to turn it into some happy-go-lucky feel-good story where, magically, everyone survives ( so pretty much the complete opposite of BotW's back story). Like, REALLY NINTENDO? TIME TRAVEL?? Creating ANOTHER time line (as if Zelda didn't have enough of those already)?? I am disappoint. If you market a game as a prequel to BotW, then it better be a goddamn prequel to BotW.

The voice acting still sucks balls. Can we at least get another voice actor for Zelda PLEASE? Her performance is maximum cringe every time. C'mon Nintendo, you're the richest company in Japan, surely you can do better in that regard?

That's all not to say that the game isn't enjoyable at all. I had a lot of fun the first 20-30 hours, which is quite some time. It's just that, at some point, the repetitive gameplay and mediocre story WILL grind you down. If they had condensed this into a 20, 25-hour-game, told the REAL story leading up to BotW, made sure it had a decent framerate and removed some of the overall clunkiness that still harkens back to the PS2 origins of the Warriors series, this could've probably been a 9/10. As it stands, it's a good game with tons of flaws.

I debated giving this game a 5, but I got my money’s worth out of it with about 80 hours of play. It’s a pretty game, and I got my money out of it. I’m writing a review because there’s a dlc coming out for the game and I personally don’t think it’s worth it because of other, better Zelda titles. I’m going to explain why, but first, the pros and cons of this game:

    Pros Visually

I’m writing a review because there’s a dlc coming out for the game and I personally don’t think it’s worth it because of other, better Zelda titles. I’m going to explain why, but first, the pros and cons of this game:

    Pros

    Visually pleasing in every way

The game lets you get straight into the action

Less grindy than any other Warriors game I’ve played

    Satisfying 1v1 combat

    Coop play

    Cons

Lots of better Zelda games to choose from

    Repetitive

    Poor AI

All in all, this game is the latest Warriors game I’m aware of and sometimes it just doesn’t feel that way. In the other Hyrule Warriors we have on the Switch, the AI takes forts. It really feels like (in Age of Calamity) your enemies sit, waiting for their lives to be taken away. Seriously, download the demo and stand back. Most of the time, you will only lose if you lose all your hearts. If you don’t fight, nothing happens. Then, once killed, the enemies stay dead. I don’t mind that last part, but it takes away the idea that you could lose friendly forts, which removes a fun aspect of challenge.

    Comparisons

Breath of the Wild—Breath of the Wild is the game AoC is based on. AoC does everything I hoped it would do—it fleshes out the Zelda characters and story that were virtually nonexistent in BotW. However, BotW gives more freedom to the player for exploration since its in the open world genre. AoC’s combat is heavily based on BotW, but provides a much simpler experience. Not gonna lie though, AoC does some really cool things with the Sheikah Slate.

Link’s Awakening—This is a much smaller game, which means it takes less time to complete. It also looks good albeit with framerate drops. The game has gone on sale a couple of times which means that if you’re patient, you can pick it up for about $40 plus tax. It’s got puzzles and bosses that diversify it more from any other Zelda game on this list.

Hyrule Warriors DE—AoC is clearly the newer game since it looks more sleek, but I have more fun with HW. It’s more challenging and it has a lot more battle modes to choose from. HW requires way too much grind, even though the definitive edition greatly reduced it. In AoC, it’s relatively easy to upgrade every character to the max which is a super nice feature. After 200 hours in the game, I still have characters that aren’t fully upgraded in HW. Finally, while AoC removes some features like the magic meter, it adds features like the magic rods to make duels feel more involved. I was attracted to most characters in HW since it covers Zelda games over a couple decades. That isn’t the case in AoC. It assumes I was attached to the characters from BotW, and I felt zero attachment to anyone as I played BotW—the characters were that bland for me.

Skyward Sword HD and BotW 2—It’s worth noting that these games are coming to the switch. They have a full stories separate from BotW. Skyward Sword follows the old linear Zelda format with dungeons and puzzles and arguably has the best story of all these games. BoTW 2 is a highly anticipated game…because it’s the sequel to BotW, a critically acclaimed game that set a new standard for Zelda. Let’s not forget that there’s a good chance that other Zelda games might be ported over to the switch.

Cadence of Hyrule--Haven't really played it beyond the demo, so I can't really compare it to AoC. But again, it is its own game, untethered to BotW.

AoC is very flawed, but I still had fun with it. If you like everything BotW, Zelda, or Warriors related, then I can recommend this game. Otherwise, your money/time is better spent on another game. My point in this review is that I would literally choose any other Zelda game than this one. I would push for any of those games before AoC (as I own them all). I may have spent 80 hours with it, but that was to complete the game in full. A part of me wishes I’d just watched the game over Youtube. I imagine it’ll be like $20 for the dlc so the price of the game could cost some people $80. As you can imagine, I will not be getting the dlc.

It is not the most in depth, or fantastic story but it was entertaining, however without spoiling it I'll admit the ending was bizarre and unsatisfying.

Gameplay wise, I have not played a dynasty warriors game since the play station 2 but this feels basically the same with zelda bells and whistles. Most characters felt unique and fun to play, with a select few that I don't know why anyone would play them over another. Link stands out as the most versatile which honestly makes sense.

Unfortunately I cannot completely write a long review like I tend to do, but perhaps I'll come back later and revise it.

For the most part, I enjoyed the over the top, large scale battles that are characteristic of the Warriors franchise. Getting into the flow of it and mowing down hundreds of enemies with satisfying combos is great fun. There's usually plenty of cannon fodder on screen for you to toy with, but there's plenty of larger enemies too which require a bit more of your attention.

Age of Calamity features a healthy roster of playable characters that you unlock as you progress through the game, and they all have fairly different movesets and unique traits. I found myself sticking to the few characters I could do the most damage with - Link, Impa and Teba - but I'm sure different people will gravitate more to others.

Playable Divine Beast sections break up the core gameplay loop and although they're mostly a decent diversion, the Vah Rudania (the Gorons' Divine Beast) quests are a bit frustrating because of its poor blocking capabilities.

Unfortunately, Age of Calamity starts to wear a bit thin after a while. It's not a short game, and I found its gameplay too mindless and repetitive to hold my interest for long periods of time. The oftentimes sparse checkpoint system only serves to exacerbate this issue. The side content is particularly egregious as much of it doesn't even have any story to support it - it has some context but is mostly devoid of any proper narrative. It's good that it's there for when you want a quick bit of action, but it could've been better.

In terms of story, Age of Calamity isn't the prequel I was expecting, and it instead introduces a separate timeline. It's tone is also perhaps a bit lighter than I thought it'd be. Taken on its own merits, the story is okay. It's nice to see the characters we grew to love from Breath of the Wild again, and fighting against the Great Calamity with them was a treat. That said, I think a proper prequel could've told a much more mature, tragic story. Seeing the downfall of the Champions could've made for some excellent storytelling, and it could've been a bold, refreshing move to let us lose for once.

Overall, this is a fairly good, enjoyable title, which perhaps unfairly has to live in the shadow of Breath of the Wild. Its connection to one of my favourite ever games is simultaneously why I expected more from it but also a big reason I liked it. If, like me, you're a big Zelda fan, just know to temper your expectations a bit regarding the story - as said, it's more of a 'what if' than a prequel. For me though, I still enjoyed Age of Calamity despite the gameplay sometimes feeling too grindy for my tastes. It's a cool, exaggerated hack and slash with a strong range of playable characters and, of course, a great soundtrack.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Age of Calamity delivers a thrilling and entertaining storyline throughout it’s story mode. It contains a diverse mix of characters to add to your party. Through its 20 story missions and 150 side missions, this game will always have something for you to do. I found the main storyline to be fulfilling both in it’s entertainment methods and cinematic methods. The game contains a variety of weapons to obtain for each character which can be upgraded as well. I personally enjoy games that require you to keep close eye on all your party members, as some side missions may contain a rule where you’re required to use a certain someone. Below are my views of the pros and cons of the game:

    ——Pros——
    - A highly diverse mix of characters to play as
    - A long and inclusive story mode
    - Tons of side missions to burn through
    - Characters can become more powerful through missions on the map
    - An expansive map with many regions (may not be open world, but still a huge map with many regions to play in)

    ——Cons——
    - Side missions can become unrelenting (constantly appearing one after the other
    - Overusing one character and not prioritizing others can have disadvantages
    - As your party gets bigger it becomes more of a chore to keep everybody evenly leveled (despite being able to level people up using rupees)
    - Getting rupees can sometimes be a chore to be able to upgrade weapons and be able to level people (if necessary)
    - Sometimes if a bigger enemy comes on screen the camera may prioritize fitting it all on screen, so focusing on smaller enemies can become an issue (especially when in big clusters)

    —————

Other than that, a solid game. I’d say more, but I don’t want to give too much away.

This game surprised me with how well it integrated Breath of the Wild's gameplay mechanics into the Warriors formula. It's not often I go for completion on a game, but this is one case where I enjoy the diversity of the characters so much that I'll be sad when I've run out of challenges. The story is enjoyable and I appreciate that it wasn't focused solely on Link. I frequently forget that this is a spin-off since the UI and art design is taken directly from BotW. I enjoyed both of the previous Warriors/Nintendo collaborations, but this one expanded the combat so much so that it never felt like a repetitive slog for me. I hope we'll be seeing even more Warriors spin-off games like this in the future. Expand

I am really disappointed in this game, I have just expected more. The game looks good, when there are no framerate problems. Sometimes the game freezes for some seconds. The game get's more boring, the further you progress. The story is boring, even though the cutscenes are well made. There is literally no character development at all, and their personalities are nothing more than the one dimensional first impression of them. Revali for example, had more character development in the little you saw in Breath of the Wild, then in this whole game. i like the cast of warriors in the game, but this doesn't save it.
If I was asked to describe iiit in one word, I would call it boring.
I am really disappointed, because Nintendo created a lot of hype around this game, and it's not worth at all the 60€ it costs.

This game is unreasonably much fun. There is so much potential, for example for a gacha style game, I would sink a lot of time into that. Or a mobile game based on the map alone. Unfortunately I mostly have fun playing as link. Story would have been great as a straight up prequel, no time travel.

We have real idiots in here writing reviews saying the game is impossble to play at the FPS the game runs at, which is an outright lie. the only times the frames drop a bit is during special moves, which aren't that frequent. This game is an excellent one, proving that KT is a competent developer, but only when it isn't their own IP. Which is hilarious.

But it is a bit odd with the ending because you would expect them to fail to stop calamity Ganon but they don’t they end up winning meaning this is not a prequel it is a what if game. I liked the Gameplay. It was a good choice to put it in the form of a Hyrule Warriors game. But I am disappointed by the story and ending. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. When I realized that it wouldn't be an actual prequel to Breath of the Wild, but rather an alternate story, I was slightly less hyped when I got the game. HOWEVER, do NOT let this stop you from getting the game because I was stunned at how AMAZING this game is! I already still had high expectations for the game, but but it exceeded them all. The gameplay is better than the original Hyrule Warriors and is indeed not "just another Warriors game". I actually felt myself using my resources and strategy wisely, unlike last game where I'd run in and kill everyone in sight. Just like the gameplay, the story was GREAT! Voice acting was also much better compared to Breath of the Wild. The story was well done and is definitely on the same quality standard of the other mainline Zelda games! I can't suggest this game enough. It's truly better than what the critics say and deserves its excellent rating. It's worth every penny! Expand

botw is my favorite game of all time so I think that's partly why I liked Hyrule Warriors age of Calamity as much as I did and the weapons system and characters are extremely fun and unique, And combat isvery satisfying... this is my first Hyrule Warriors game.

This is , without the technical issues and the sometimes very repetitive Missions, a really good and fun Warriors Game. I didnt play the original Hyrule Warriors, i just played Botw and thought this would be the perfect addition to that. The Story and especially the End are exactly what i wanted, when i finished botw. imo a must play if you enjoyed botw and its story too

I have never played a Dynasty Warriors type of game previously, but being a huge BOTW fan I decided to give this a go. I didn't regret one minute of it. The gameplay is smooth, almost all characters are fun to play with, there is enough variation in the level design and the collection of items to progress my characters got me pretty hooked since I got to care about them a lot. This was mainly due to the fantastic presentation of the world, characters and storytelling. Amazing is almost too weak of a word to describe it. I didn't mind the occasional fps drops and some off camera movements in tight corners since the sum of things is almost too good to be true, visually and acustically. I best the game after around 45 hours, taking my time and doing lots of side quests. I expect to put another 20-30 hours while playing for some quick fun during the next weeks. In my eyes a must-play for all BOTW fans and a definite option for those who are unfamiliar with the franchise! Expand

The whole FPS argument is weak to me as I didn't even notice the issue playing the game. Age of Calamity is an excellent game top to bottom. Story is ok, but the meat and potatoes are unacceptable. FPS is garbage. Gameplay and stage design are ridiculous, boing and repetitive. Just because it's with BOTW elements doesn't mean it's good. I'd rather replay BOTW again than spending a lot of my time playing this poorly designed, cash-grabbing game.

The more I played it the more I disliked it, the gameplay is fun enough, but the story is just **** The tiny guardian is a horrible inclusion.

Age of Calamity is like a t-shirt with your favorite band’s artwork – remove the love of their music and all you’ve got is a piece of clothing. Similarly, if you play Hyrule Warriors not familiar with Breath of the Wild, you’ll miss tons of fan service and end up with a pretty and relaxing but rather basic hack and slash. [01/2021, p.64]
