Zelda gets the Dynasty Warriors treatment once more, folding in inspiration from Breath of the Wild for the best musou spin-off yet. [Eurogamer Recommended]

Fans primarily looking for a meaningful addition to Breath of the Wild’s canon can skip this game. It wastes the opportunity to establish the deep connections present in Breath of the Wild, instead serving only as a vehicle for beating up bokoblins as your Breath of the Wild fave. In the absence of other payoffs—for example, I’d forgive every sin named here if, as is typical for the Dynasty Warriors franchise, each character got their own story mode—not even my ardent love for these characters was enough to sustain my interest over the entire, artificially padded game. Again, you can play as Lady Urbosa. That’s it. That’s the game.

Even with a couple of major missteps, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is a welcome excuse to return to one of the most beloved video game worlds of the last decade and spend some quality time with characters who were already dead by the time Breath of the Wild started. There's an irresistible charm to making Mipha annihilate dozens of monsters at once with a cartoonishly large water tornado.

The game never fully embraces the potential opportunities of its time-traveling premise, but I was still hooked throughout. Possibly it helped that Breath of the Wild already did such a good job of establishing the stakes. Age of Calamity didn’t have to do much to pull on the same heartstrings. Sometimes, a short cutscene with a pained glance or a wavering voice was all it took to reinvigorate the drama of it all.

For such a conflicted experience, it’s remarkable how well Age of Calamity works. No, it’s not a new Breath of the Wild, and fans coming to it from that perspective will likely be disappointed. (Luckily, a real sequel is in the works.) Despite some largely superficial similarities, the two games play completely differently. But some of those elements that made Breath of the Wild so beloved — a beautiful world, memorable characters, varied combat — help make an otherwise straightforward experience feel fresh and interesting. It’s not subtle, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t Zelda.

    Still in need of improvement.
FPS go to hell when a lot of effects/enemies/both are on screen. 2-Player Mode is still only about 20 FPS.

I didn’t spend 60€ to play a game that’s not running smoothly. Either reduce the enemies on screen and with it the kills needed for objectives or reduce the effects.
Story: Very simplistic. Could be more complex.
Also, it’s very repetitive. Feels like an Asian MMORPG in terms of material grinding.

Gameplay is mediocre and the games marketting was flat out false advertising. Do not go in looking for a Breath of the Wild prequel.

The more I played it the more I disliked it, the gameplay is fun enough, but the story is just **** The tiny guardian is a horrible inclusion.
