Such a relaxing numbers game similar to minesweeper. I play it to unwind after a long day.

This puzzle game is wonderful. Not too much more to say, because it is free to download, and you'll find out very quickly if you like it or not. The music is icing on the cake. This is a no-brainer include in your library if you like Minesweeper, or logic games. (And I did get the DLC puzzles; easily worth it.)

Previously in this review, I incorrectly suggested some puzzles necessitated guessing - turns out I hadn't learned a few tricks yet! The game is a fun test of logic - I really enjoy it, and I play it often. Great value with a season pass of the DLC.

There is a great replayability to the levels, which offer 5 possible 'achievements'. And while the music is appropriate, there are about 5 tracks (with a volume slider). One of the final challenges is to complete sets of over 100 levels in a single session, but this seems artificially difficult. While you can put your console to sleep, you can't close the software between levels, and i found the game holding my Switch hostage over the course of the three days it took to complete the task. My only other serious complaint is that there is an achievement for completing a level without using the 'highlight' mechanic. This is a strangely finicky mechanic, such that you could complete the final level with over 200 bomb cells only to find out you had somehow accidentally incurred a penalty without noticing, and so you have to start it over completely. While this part is entirely voluntary, it is substantially frustrating. Last, but least, the game file size is strangely large.

Are you a fan of Minesweeper, where the goal is to methodically clear the board of hidden spots by using logic to determine where mines are based on the numbers on the tiles touching them? Progressively throwing a little extra challenge into the mix with walls and other tricks, aside from using a hex-based board instead of using squares, Hexceed is pretty much exactly what you’d think was being promised if you’re a fan of that Windows classic. It’s simple but it demonstrates an improvement over a game I long ago pretty well forgot about, and I can respect it. If you’re a puzzle fan at least it’s a different flavor that, to this point, I don’t think I’ve encountered on the Switch eShop.

Relaxing brain game based on minesweeper! I am in shock that this game has a lot of free levels!

I've had fun with Hexceed, but it feels like a first pass at an idea that could be cleaned up in several areas. Here's hoping it doesn't bomb so its devs keep it sweeping! [Issue #58 – March/April 2022, p. 25]
