    Jumping into the wayback machine for this one, seeing this title for the first time since the Commodore 64 era was a bit of a thrill, I’ll admit. Though I don’t remember much of the mechanical experience, I did have a recollection that it was a challenging game my friend and I worked through little by little waaay back in the day. If you have nostalgia for either this title, or for gamesJumping into the wayback machine for this one, seeing this title for the first time since the Commodore 64 era was a bit of a thrill, I’ll admit. Though I don’t remember much of the mechanical experience, I did have a recollection that it was a challenging game my friend and I worked through little by little waaay back in the day. If you have nostalgia for either this title, or for games of that era, I can tell you that the translation here is quite authentic… warts and all. But first, you’ll need to simply get used to the isometric movement scheme and simply how the game works mechanically in terms of jumping and what each button does. That’s where one of the major issues comes into play though, as the experience is absolutely authentic to the original, providing zero instruction or provisions for help of any kind. Since the style of play, switching between your two characters, and working your way through puzzles in each room doesn’t have a very contemporary feel or sensibility that lack of guidance makes the game tough to love out of the gate. However, if you’re willing to put in some effort, and perhaps look up an ancient strategy guide, retro fans may enjoy the trip down memory lane.

    In the 8-bit era Head over Heels was an absolute stonker, I played it every evening for weeks, decades before instant access to walkthroughs, other than gaming magazines. The trouble with this remake, just like the pc version, is that the makers have changed things so that it is not the same game. Specifically in the switch version there is no way to easily use pickup/drop simultaneouslyIn the 8-bit era Head over Heels was an absolute stonker, I played it every evening for weeks, decades before instant access to walkthroughs, other than gaming magazines. Specifically in the switch version there is no way to easily use pickup/drop simultaneously with jump, which is a fundamental part of the game. Also, the doorways in game are in the wrong position, so you can land on top of them instead of sliding down past them from above, it may seem petty but it’s not correct and there is no reason for it being like that. The worst part about the switch version, which is the reason I will ask for a refund, is that you simply cannot save. There’s the option to start an old game and a list of old games in the start menu, but no option to save in game, fish or no fish. And don’t get me started in the atrocious music and sound effects. Or the ‘reimagined’ artwork. This whole remake feels like abuse, like an important part of my teenage childhood has been assaulted. Devs should be ashamed of themselves.… Expand

    Games of this sort tend to be love it or hate it affairs, but I will say that as far as isometric action-adventure games go, Heads Over Heels is very good. Sure, the usual frustrations apply. It can be hard to judge depth and distances, and basic controls take some getting used to thanks to the camera view. There is a lot of trial-and-error involved in the puzzles, and you have limited lives to work with. It can be incredibly vexing. But the puzzles themselves are well-designed, and the bizarre universe the characters inhabit is fun to explore. I don’t typically get into games like this, but I had a decent time with Head Over Heels.
