Fun simple golf game. There is a nice variety of gameplay with a lot great unlocks. The story is fantastic so far.
What the game lacks right now is polish. There is no way to quit a challenge you can't win. Several times after ending a conversation, beating a challenge, or something the game would freeze. Currently, my save file is corrupted. Its a good game that is a little too

I'm finding Golf Story difficult to love. The golf itself is great, once you figure out for yourself how to play because the game WILL NOT tell you. Supposedly one of the greats on Switch. I don't really see it.

It okay honestly! It's cute and charming
but it has a few bugs so make sure you save a lot.
The golf mechanics can get frustrating if you're not into that :c
And there's no clear tutorial or good explanations of what each skill does and no objective pointers

Unexpectedly really fun game, but there's some ridiculous difficulty spikes here and there. After many attempts at the first round of the final course I decided to put down the game, whereas I breezed through all the other courses. Still want to give it an overal positive review though, but my score would be at least a 9 if it was balanced properly.

I so dislike the sport Golf but...

Golf story manages to make it super fun.
Lots of laughing and quirky funny and weird characters.
    Seriously enjoyed playing this.

Only issue i had after 14 hours off playing Golf i was done for,i was seriously sick and tired of swinging a Golf stick. Did not manage to finish the game as it became super repetitive .

Golf Story has a unique charm about it. It's very self aware, and even though characters take themselves seriously. You as a player see how ridiculous their motives are. The protagonist of the game has his own motivation...but the NPCs make it clear pretty early that they don't care. I'd kind of say that the devs didn't really want to you care either. After the initial course, the protagonist unenthusiastically wins the remaining tournaments because "why not?"

Gameplay was really fun in the beginning and I really wanted to get good enough to read the greens like I can in other golf games, but once you get to the mid to later holes the physics feel really broken. The game gave a vague description to how steep the green is, then it was randomly up to the game whether or not it would make the shot close to the hole or WAY past it. The devs also got a little lazy making the game read "yards" when my ball was only inches away from the hole.
Oh my gosh and the wind. The wind mechanic is incredibly broken. Many times the 3MPH winds pushed my ball as much as the 12MPH wind.
I became frustrated almost to the point of quitting, but was determined to finish the game. I even played to 100% completion because I wanted to get the most out of this game. There are many who like this game and I don't hate it, I just wish there was more polish.

Overall, Golf Story is a fun time. Maybe I will play it again in the future, but for now it just made me want a more polished golf game.

The golfing gameplay is well-executed, much like the mechanics found in Mario Golf games; not too in-depth, and not too simple. Your quest will take you to various golf courses that are just outlandish in design; driving balls through forests, deserts, snowscapes, off the backs of turtles, through the peering eyes of ball-thieving gophers. The sidequests are ideal, in that they don't lead you on hour-long treks out of your way. Rather, they're all quick endeavors that reward you with money, experience points, and often a good laugh.

Of particular note is the dialogue and its implementation. Writing in games is always a focal point to me, and it satisfies. Everyone is loaded with personality and regular humor, and gentle effects are added via speech bubble animations, variations in font size/hardness, and some solid HD Rumble utilization. You can practically hear your Joy-Con sigh when a person admits defeat, feel your hands kick back when you rifle off a perfect shot, and the never-gets-old clink-clink-clunk of sinking your ball in the hole.

Once you've finished the main story, which at my estimate will likely be around 15-20 hours thanks to a deceptive difficulty curve, you're left with a Quick Play mode which will be great to come back to anytime you feel like playing some zany courses. Great value in this game.

I've only got a few minor complaints. The main one being, a little more polish could've benefitted. Transitions between many scenes is a little jarring, with the screen not fading out/in and music cutting away from one track to the next. There's also a rare camera bug that fails to re-focus onto the player, which is remedied by exiting the area (or entering a building.) I also would've appreciated a little more in-game instruction -- you can push Select ("Minus") to show the controls, but it doesn't cover all of them (such as, clicking the right analog stick toggles the camera zoom) and there's no explanation of topspin and backspin. That's about it.

Highly recommended for (Mario) golf fans, generally recommended for absolutely everyone else.

The story is funny, you will chuckle a lot, and uses the rumble feature the best out of any game on the switch so far.

The golfing is not super hard for someone used to these types of games but it's still really good and satisfying because it's fair. If you hit it in the water it's because you're bad, you can't blame it on anything else. The skill system can be a bit hard to understand if you're not into golf though so make sure to google it so you understand how it works.

This game would've probably been a 8/10 for me but the thing that puts it into the 9/10 spot is the price tag. There are so many games on the switch that takes advantage of the fact that there are few games by raising the prices but this is not one of them. For 15$ this is a must have for any RPG or Golf fan.

The RPG mechanics are basic with gaining points to spend after leveling up on stats such as accuracy and power but it still scratches that RPG itch. The golf mechanics are what really shines and what I was most unsure about before release. A simple bar at the bottom of the screen that fills up and decides the power and accuracy of the shot is quite satisfying. The cool thing is that golf isn't the only sport in this title. The mini golfing, disc golfing and also drones are all quite fun as well. I found myself smiling and chuckling at the story with some of the dialogue and at the same time awing at how fun and pretty the world is. I dabbled a little in the two player and the only thing I was wishing was for quick play to have a way to record a high score and stats like longest drive or seeing how many total birdies and pars and what not that have been achieved thus far but that can always be added later if this is supported post launch. I can't recommend Golf Story enough for anyone looking for a light RPG out of the traditional fighting kind of games with a lighthearted story that doesn't take itself too serious. Its beautiful courses and mechanics along with a charming story will have anyone hooked for hours. Expand

The gameplay itself, which largely involves playing 9 hole courses and other challenges using the old “3 click swing” method found in many a golf game over the years, is a little simplistic to be honest and by itself likely wouldn’t have been enough to carry the title. Fortunately however the games script and sense of humour did more than enough to keep me playing and, as a golfer myself, I found it genuinely funny throughout.

I hope we see a sequel, or spin-off, that develops the gameplay a little more as we could have an excellent game on our hands.

It's also easy to pick up and play, with lots to do and a few tricky puzzles. All the worlds have side quests sprinkled around them which all put a unique spin on a game that would otherwise be full of rigid golf courses. Even though the different courses each had unique mechanics, I never felt like they were ever very important. Luckily, the basic mechanics have enough depth that it is still engaging. There are a few places where it's easy to not know what to do and get stuck, but a quick search online will make what to do clear. One personal gripe I have that probably arose from my own stupidity is that for almost the whole duration of the game, I thought that hitting a ball into water did not force you to waste a turn. Do not make the same mistake I did. Expand

Where Mario Golf's story was a shallow excuse to string you along to the next step in the difficulty progression, Golf Story's golf feels like a shallow excuse to string you along to the next timewaster segment. There's also a sore lack of VS matches (with ONE exception I've found insofar), and a distressing plethora of opportunities to inadvertently softlock the game.

That being said, neither the golf nor the humor is actively terrible, and it may yet be worth its low price of admission; the pacing is just the biggest drawback in what was close to being a much better-realized game.

"Bigger than Skyrim's." How did Battlefield 1 sell so well? "CoD won't do boots on the ground" Etc etc etc

So how do you compare Golf Story to another RPG? You don't.... Golf Story, like other strange "one-of-a-kind" games of the past, cannot really be compared to another RPG. This game, had it been released on the SNES, would've given rise to another sort of "Harvest Moon" franchise, because it is a game that takes a real-life thing - a non-fantasy element - and places it in a realm we are used to looking at as "fantasy;" this is the RPG realm.

And it does it well, very well. The music is wonderful. The dialogue is great, and funny, and doesn't try too hard to poke at little things here and there we already think about the world and people around us. The 8-bit style, as well as the music, are reminiscent, as many of these games are, of the SNES era; more specifically, 1994/95 in the SNES era., which is when games like Chrono Trigger, Tales of Phantasia, and Final Fantasy 3 (VI) were released.. these are all games with a similar style of both art and music, and a similar style of "hands-off" storytelling, in which the game slowly lets you in on the whole picture, through the characters.

Why is this last bit important? Because, much like you don't need to enjoy farming to like Harvest Moon (or Stardew Valley), you don't need to know the slightest bit about golf to enjoy "Golf Story." You just have to be human... that's the only prerequisite, I guess. And open-minded to a different kind of RPG.. one that is neither "Western," nor "JRPG," and one that, because of this, can't really be compared to any other game, in the same way no one could compare something like Pikmin to whatever may have come before, even if there were similar elements as in other "creature command" games. Now, this is no Pikmin - neither is it Pokemon or Harvest Moon - but it is damn fun, and I really wish people would be willing to drop $15 on this instead of $40-60 on something they've already owned and thoroughly played before.

But it turns out you can, and beautifully at that. This game hits all the right spots for me, great (and very Australian) humor, satisfying gameplay, and a feeling of progression. To mention wonderful usage of its platform, this feels exactly like something Nintendo would've made for the Switch.

The golf mechanics are simple enough, you get a power meter, all the typical clubs, and you need to factor in wind speed for your drives and sloping for your putts. It's pretty similar to Mario Golf. Where things get fun though, is when that RPG genre kicks in. You'll be solving quests with golf (getting you experience to level up your golf stats), buying new clubs as you would equipment, and you'll solve puzzles to advance the (rather hilarious and ridiculous) story, generally also involving golf. There's one of these puzzles in particular that was an absolute joy to complete for me, perfectly combining humor, puzzle solving, and of course, golf. HD Rumble is very apparent too, almost everything you do will make the controller do something. Perhaps the best example is when you knock a ball off a cliff and your controllers will make a cartoon-ish sound. It can be a little too much though (EVERY text bubble, really?), so thankfully you can turn this off if you choose.

The seven main courses you'll play on are just as weird as everything else in this game, you'll go from what feels like redneck golf, to a "haunted" course, to a country club, and many more. All of them stand out visually, and all have unique traits to them. For example, the first course you'll go to has moles that can move your ball. There's more than just standard golf to play as well. You'll experience disc golf, mini-golf, and several other modes that I won't ruin. It's a game packed with content, well worth the price tag.

However, I can't give it a higher score than a 7 for one simple reason: It's a really buggy game. Crashes are common, weird quirks can both break things or make them a breeze, there are occasional problems with saving, and there's a several quality of life issues (Not being able to restart a clearly failed mission is the biggest offender for me). Some of this happens at random, and can really ruin things for you, possibly even forcing a restart of your entire file, although I haven't suffered this myself. If these are fixed I will gladly give this game the 8 or 9 it deserves.

Overall though, if you're willing to deal with some frustrations and love either golf or RPGs, I couldn't possibly recommend this game enough.

Golf Story certainly came as a surprise. I'd call the game a sports RPG, which yes, needs to become a genre. Much of the game plays like an RPG, but instead of random battles you play the golf. Much of the game plays like an RPG, but instead of random battles you play the golf. A lot of this is doing simple challenges people ask you to do, but some of them are just crazy, like using golf balls to stop an undead army. After a golf game you gain experience which you can use to level up and improve your golfing skills. When you're not golfing, the game plays like a typical RPG where you'll run around doing "quests" for people. Thanks to the creative characters and humorous dialogue this remains interesting.

Sometimes you'll have to do full 9-course games. There are some twists to courses, like turtles you can bounce the ball off of, jack-o-lanterns that send your ball off flying into the distance, birds and moles which grab your ball and drop it into an undesirable place, and many other things. Obviously, the game is very tongue-and-cheek. Writing is very important in an RPG, and fortunately the writing is excellent. The story keeps you interested, and the game is full of charm and humor.

Apparently this game plays like the Mario Golf games, but I haven't played those, so I can't comment. The golfing aspect of the game works perfectly. It's challenging enough to not be easy, but not enough to where you'll get frustrated. Even if you don't like sports games, you owe it to yourself to give this game a try. It's only $15 and there are few better ways to spend $15. The game clocks in at about 30 hours.

Frankly, I want to see more sports RPGs. There is so much you could do with this genre. For example, you could do an RPG about boxer where the gameplay is like Mike Tyson's Punch-Out. Also, it doesn't have to be funny, it could serious or tragic. Or you could do a game that makes you laugh and then cry. There is so much potential here. I hope the guys who made this make another sports RPG, although I could understand if they want to do something else. Golf Story is a Switch exclusive, and frankly, Nintendo should hire these people and give them a real budget.

The only real problem with the game(here it comes) are the glitches. I had one major glitch that was fixed by restarting the game, but some people are running into game-breaking glitches. These will hopefully be patched, but unfortunately, in the meantime we're kind of beta-testing. Still, the odds that you'll run into a glitch that will prevent you from finishing the game is unlikely. I was constantly worried, though, when I couldn't figure out what to do next. I did have to resort to Google a couple of times to figure out what to do next, but that's normal for me.

So bottom line, get this game. I want to see more games like this. Don't worry if you don't like sports games. I hate sports games, too, but I loved this game. It's an RPG where the random battles are replaced with golfing, and it works flawlessly. You owe it to yourself to check it out. Also, ignore the critics who gave this game a low rating. Look at all these indie games with critic scores in the high 80s and user scores in the mid-70s. It's a crime that a game with a user score this high gets a critic score of 81(as of writing this). Pay attention to the positive response from gamers instead.

The characters are well animated, and combined with the humorous dialogue, do a great job of adding personality to the game.

On occasion, though, I found the typical side-quests lacking. Golf Story finds a way to shoehorn a great number of diversions into the main golfing theme — digging up treasure with your golf club, for example — but when these are repeated several times, they can verge on feeling like a bit of a chore. Admittedly, I did go out of my way to finish many of these optional tasks, so I clearly didn’t find them too much of a drag.

The golf game works in a classic ‘arcade’-style: easy controls which adopt the almost universal ‘power and accuracy’ bar which starts on your first press, gets more powerful the longer you wait for the second press, then gives you a small duration in which to press one final time, to set accuracy. It’s an interface that works absolutely as expected, and can be understood pretty much straight away.

The golf playing was fun but I liked it most when playing for longer sessions. Anything under an hour, and I felt I was just relearning some of the techniques I’d learnt previously, only to then stop. Longer sessions enabled me to hone those skills and actually improve. And I wish there was a way to cancel a shot — every now and then, I’d accidentally start my swing when setting it up, and have no option but to play out a terrible shot.

But Golf Story is, at its heart, a silly, challenging, novel experience, one which I would highly recommend to any Switch owner, especially those with an affinity for retro gaming. At its price-point, it represents excellent value for money.

The main story consists of a series of rounds of golf and golf-related activities. The main character aims to get competitive golf wins under his belt so that he can qualify as a pro player. According to his coach, he has a very "unique" swing--one that should have destroyed his career from the get-go--but somehow he makes it work. Do you have what it takes to swing your way from obscurity to fame? Explore different turfs, fight an army of the undead, play disk golf with hipsters, witness a rap battle between the old and uptight and the young and undisciplined, perform golf course maintenance, solve a murder mystery, bow to the whims of a talking tombstone, put a ghost to rest--and more!

The impressive part to all that diversity is the fact that the developer managed to tie all of them back to *golfing*. Everything can and will be settled with the swing of a club.

In Golf Story, golfing boils down to timing and intuition. You're given the wind direction and strength in every area, as well as the slope of the ground when applicable. These must be factored into how hard you hit your ball and in what direction because they can be game changers. In order to hit your ball in any situation except a putt, you must press A on two sections of the bar: one for strength and the other for accuracy. A cursor slides along the bar and your timing is crucial.

So let's talk about RPG elements.

There's a world map to traverse and each course opens up in a linear fashion--meaning you need to have made enough story progress in order to proceed to the next course. There are 8 courses in total, each of which is significantly different both thematically and mechanically.

Quests require either 1. your shots to fall within a target 2. you to race and hit targets within a time limit, and sometimes 3. collection of a specified amount of items--but most often it'll boil down to hitting a target despite the opposition of wind, the slope of the ground, and rascally critters.

Unfortunately, quests tend to be trial and error which is often frustrating. It's difficult to gauge exactly how your ball will respond to the combined wind strength and drag created by the type of terrain or slope, and your ball also bounces just as a real one would. The distance indicator on screen only shows you where your shot would land in a perfect world; you have to adjust trajectory and strength based on the information given to you. Eyeballing distance on a virtual golf course was a near impossible task for me, so I'd often need to retry the same shot ten times over. It would be nice if there was a way to restart a quest/challenge once you know there's no way you can succeed, rather than have to play through until the end and then start over entirely.

You're rewarded with exp based on the difficulty of the task completed. Full games of golf versus NPCs reward you with more exp than a side quest will.

Once you've gained enough experience, your character levels up and you can allocate points to one of five areas:

    -Power
    -Purity
    -Strike
    -Ability
    -Spin

The stats aren't really explained. The game doesn't tend to explain or give an example, even when teaching you how to do something. Instead, it expects you to try it out for yourself and get a feel for things. This hands-off teaching approach can become frustrating if you aren't able to work out how to do something on the first few tries.

As far as grievances go, however, Golf Story does very little that I could complain about.

Other RPG elements: plus button brings up the menu, where you can check your notes (quest log), your key items, stats, what you've unlocked this far in the story, and change your equipped gear. You'll also see your level and how much money you possess.

Shops. One in each area. They have very limited inventory and the rest of the clubs that fan be found in the game can be dug up or rewarded to you for completing a quest. Equipment management is on the light side, but you do eventually upgrade what you start with and it does make a difference.

Golf Story's writing is great. I wasn't familiar with some of the vernacular given that it's solidly Australian, but I found myself laughing aloud on more than one occasion. The soundtrack is great. Each area has its own track and they're all upbeat and catchy. The art style us bright and detailed and the characters are expressive, which only adds to the hilarity of the script.

    .Final Verdict: Highly Recommended.
Golf Story does something different and combines the RPG elements of story, a levelling up system, and equipment management and mixes them with fun and fast rounds of golf. While the game doesn't give enough information at times and the resulting trial and error approach can be frustrating, there's a lot to love here--even if you're not a fan of sports.

The main character is likable but a bit too silly at times. The ending also leaves a lot to be desired but maybe the sequel will pick up from there.
However, the gameplay is very satisfying. It's the simple three-click mechanics that you have seen in other gold games (e.g. Everybody's Golf or Pangya) but what keep the gameplay from being stale are the course gimmicks. Some course features molerats which move your golfball from one place to another. Others have this particular area in the water that if you land your golfball there, instead of sinking, a turtle rises to the surface to bounce the golfball off its shell, increasing the distance even further. Sadly, only a few courses make full use of their mechanics together but overall, I find golfing in this game pretty fun.
You can also challenge your friends to play against each other in a multiplayer mode which is easy to pick-up and play.

I recommend this game to anyone who wants to have a chill time playing golf.

True aficionados of golf sims might disagree - I'm a casual player of the genre myself with only a XBOX360 Tiger Woods game on my sheet previous to this. Fans of Mario Golf will know what to expect, mechanics-wise.
The storyline is fairly lighthearted and humorous. You want to be a golfing pro just like your old man, but everyone says that you suck, so you get about getting a coach and training to be the best. The courses are varied and well-designed; there's an island-hopping beach course populated by surfer types, a fancy course full of rich snobs, a spooky haunted course, and others besides. The story elements aren't overly prevelant and you're free to wander the areas of the map that you've unlocked so far, play courses to your heart's content, look for the usual NPCs offering side quests or pursue the main storyline in RPG fashion. The levelling up elements are pretty basic; as you gain XP you can make your drives longer or more accurate or put more spin on your swings. You also get more and better equipment as you advance, as you'd expect.
There are some interesting and fun situations you find yourself in, such as being locked in a mansion with various shady characters in order to solve a mystery, or being compelled by a ghost to complete a course he's made, or chasing off birds that are carrying away balls that think they're eggs. There's an invasion of the rich snobby course by the clientelle of the poor run-down one, resulting in a brilliant rap battle between the two. You'll complete golfing challenges and go treasure-hunting with an archeologist. Overall you'll be surprised just how many problems in life can be solved by thwacking a ball at them.
The actual golfing itself is pretty standard for 2D golfing games and you won't find anything revolutionary there, it's more about the way the game is presented and framed which makes Golf Story stand out from other sims.
I had a lot of fun playing this and enjoyed the twist/reveal at the end. It only lost one mark for me because I wanted it to be longer!

Golf Story is a goofy, quirky, charming 2D RPG based around golf that doesn't take itself too seriously and has a great sense of humor. You have stats that you upgrade as you progress through the story, not just playing matches or tournaments, but doing golf and non-golf mini-challenges and optional sidequests to gain more EXP and cash for upgrades.

The golf gameplay is very simple and easy to pick up—press the button on a meter bar at the right times for power and accuracy—but throws in enough mechanics to keep it engaging: club upgrades, applying spin, adjusting hit-point on the ball to affect angle and roll, etc. The courses are mostly unique and interesting. Some of them are rather unconventional, like a caveman valley of dinosaur bones, a spooky graveyard, and a snowy winter wonderland. Every course has its own challenges so it's never boring. You have to learn to deal with ice/snow, landing zones where birds move your ball to a different spot, greens that aren't greens but rough grass, tar, puddles, water animals that can bounce your ball further, pumpkins that will bounce your ball way off...all sorts of shenanigans. It's a refreshing and casual take on golf.

On the downside, the putting mechanics suck. Your only indication of slope is a directional arrow in the HUD pointing the angle and whether it's slight, medium or hard. Accurate putting can be confounding at times. The AI in matches in tournaments isn't very good either, so most of the game felt a breeze to get through. Would have been nice if there were difficulty options.

Furthermore, the non-golf mini-games are not fun and have terrible controls. RC car, frisbee, drone, etc...they're all optional but awful if you just can't help but want to do every side-quest. The golf side quests are mostly all interesting challenges, but some of them can be infuriatingly hard. Also, there's some terrible user design: on many side-quest golf challenges, even if you've already met the requirements (like hit x number of targets), you have to take all your allotted shots before the challenge ends; there's no option to quit or restart in the middle of a challenge; and the NES throwback games you can collect and play virtually are glitchy as hell, forcing you to reboot the game.

Overall, it's a fun, charming little game that's worth it, even if it's got some bad mechanics, user design, and glitches. If they make sequels, there's definite room for improvement.

My main complaint : the Frisbee is just really really bad design, I have to force me to pass over these tests to go through the whole game and give it a fair chance, but the overall experience at the end wasn't THAT great.

While a story or intriguing use of narrative might have only gone so far, though, Golf Story’s easy-to-grasp; hard-to-master core gameplay — that still manages to pace its teaching players the smaller details — is what will keep players coming back for more. Having them hunt down even the additional side-quests on top, no matter how zany or surreal the premise might be. It’s this unorthodox approach ultimately that gives Golf Story its unique identity and undeniable appeal as both a sports title and an independent release. While the influences are clear to see and the source material might not be entirely original, this game is wonderfully, weirdly different, but engaging all the same.
