Apr 28, 2022Despite some occasional slowdown and framerate shenanigans Ganryu 2 is beautifully animated and moves around at a fair old lick, and the whole package is just a gorgeous neo-retro arcade treat.
-
Apr 24, 2022Ganryu 2 is a very challenging retro-style action game that, despite having few levels, can be very difficult to complete. Its level of challenge will undoubtedly delight old-school players who will surely find a challenge. It is a recommended title, but it is advisable to have a lot of patience.
-
May 22, 2022Ganryu 2 reminds us a lot of those side-scrolling games where we couldn't blink. Gameplay is good but the levels are a bit long and the checkpoints are far from each other. It is an entertaining game even if you have to repeat a level several times.
-
Apr 20, 2022In almost every regard, Ganryu 2 is spectacular: it looks fantastic, builds on the original game in meaningful ways, nails the level and boss design that’s so crucial in an action platformer, and plays like a dream in the moment. But a horrific continue system that feels restrictive even by arcade standards means that actually experiencing all it has to offer requires the patience of a saint, and what should be a surefire hit instead turns into a painful slog.
-
May 8, 2022A small patch would shape the experience, but as it stands, the whole thing can be greatly improved.
-
Apr 29, 2022Retro players starved for a Shinobi-like title who also relish mastery through repetition will surely see this as the perfect opportunity — just be sure to get anything other than the Switch version. For everyone else, Ganryu 2‘s try-and-die learning curve is repulsive, and the trial-and-error design harshly punishes the player for every little mistake. It’s one of those rare titles that I do not wish to go back to.

Apr 21, 2022Ganryu 2: Hakuma Kojiro gives us one of the most mystifying pieces of software to hit the public domain in recent times. If it could muster even a stable 30 FPS, it would likely be a commendable arcade action adventure, featuring nice mechanics, stage variety, large bosses and pleasing graphics. Possibly, even, a highlight in its genre. As it stands, it’s so confusing a technical train wreck that we can barely make sense of why it's been released in this condition. Should a patch materialise that resolves these issues entirely you can add at least three points to our current score, but at present technical problems gravely undermine the positives.

Jun 6, 2022After the framerate fix its really good! Too bad the physical release is tainted with an unplayable version because of the frame drops.
