If you’ve ever wanted to play through cartoon action sequences, Fly Punch Boom! might just be for you.
Jollypunch Games is a one-man team from Italy, a developer that had a wonderful idea to make a cartoony game where you can fly into buildings and literally smash off the faces of your friends. In Fly Punch Boom! you can do just that. Mimicking fight scenes from action anime and more, close up quick-time scenes will turn the tables on any fight.
Kicks are more powerful in Goku’s pants.
Health is shown in the upper corners of the screen in a clean UI — all bars are easy to understand and don’t impede gameplay. You can fly around the screen using the left joystick and can execute attacks with A/B/X/Y. During some attacks, you’ll have the option to mash a particular button or time a press just right on a moving bar. If you are successful, you can deal massive damage to your opponent, and failure will end in being knocked around yourself. Each character controls similarly, so there’s no real need to relearn a bunch of combos when you want to change gameplay.
Graphically, the game looks like something out of a cartoon, and would have awed us back in the days of Newgrounds’ flash games and videos. Many times, this will feel like an interactive fight sequence right out of a late 90’s anime, but the smooth colors and visuals definitely keep this modern. The worlds do have set limits, where usually one can’t move forward, but here you’ll have actual bumpers that will have you ricochet around the stage — which is even more fun when you’re bouncing your friends around like rag dolls.
Various stages can be fought on, each having its own interactive terrain. You can slam your opponent through buildings, into the ground below, and more. Featuring active environmental destruction, the more brutal you are, the more the world around you will crumble. The cute art style lends well to this adds a lot of replayability to each stage.
Game modes are plenty:
LOCAL and ONLINE Multiplayer, up to 4 PLAYERS local & 2 online.
ARCADE MODE, UNLOCKABLES and SECRETS for solo players.
You really have to be fast on these quick-time events.
Fly Punch Boom! has enough depth to keep most players happy, but is approachable enough for anyone to have fun with. The art style and music are attractive, and the controls are easy to learn. This is a game that doesn’t take itself seriously, and a place where you can digest your friends and literally fart them out on screen. If that isn’t hilarious for a couple kids playing couch co-op at home, I don’t know what is.
Pros:
-Fast-paced gameplay that is easy to learn and tough to master
-Anime-style soundtrack that pulls the whole project together
-A huge variety of quick events and scenes when fighting
Cons:
-Small selection of stages and characters
-Quick-time events sometimes feel impossibly fast
Overall: 8.5/10
Fly Punch Boom! is an absolutely hilarious work of art. For any player that likes good cartoon fun, this is an absolute hit. With its meme-like art and parody approach to the fighter genre, its a title that I hope gets a lot of love and recognition. The game goes live on May 28th on both Nintendo Switch and Steam.… Expand
