Bad news: you're dead. Good news: at least you made it into Heaven!

When you first awaken in the afterlife, you find yourself on a tiny deserted island in the middle of the ocean. For a place called Heaven, it sure doesn't feel much like paradise. There's no shelter to protect you from the elements, nor even any food to eat. In fact, the only thing here at all seems to be an old fishing rod lying down by the shore. Looks like you're gonna have to learn how to fish.

Thankfully, you won't have to go it alone for long, as you'll soon be given access to your very own boat, as well as a fancy little doodad called a "skyPhone." With this, you can plan out fishing expeditions, upgrade your gear, and take on requests from the various denizens of the afterlife. By fulfilling their wishes, you'll grow closer to each of these friendly souls, and eventually, gain access to new fishing spots and even more interesting types of fish, with each step bringing you closer to uncovering the mysteries surrounding the legendary God Fish...

Fishing Paradiso is a narrative-driven adventure game designed to be both therapeutic and engaging with its relaxing gameplay and RPG-style progression systems. The more you fish, the more the game opens up with new environments to explore, new story objectives, and new characters to meet and befriend.

The simplicity of Fishing Paradiso is a facade for the beating heart at the center of this fishing game. It scratched all the right itches for me, providing a pleasant fishing experience that was relaxing without being mindless. It tells a deep story (albeit with some stilted dialogue) that claws at what the afterlife is and deals with some heady topics in a playful, contemplative way. Distill Fishing Paradiso to its essence and it’s straightforward, but this is a game that is far greater than the sum of its parts.

Fishing Paradiso isn’t the fishing game for folks who want something technical or realistic. It’s the one you get if you like fishing in Animal Crossing or Story of Seasons. Which is fine, because a lot of people could probably use that kind of game. It is simple and sometimes not the most polished, but it is enjoyable.

  1. Card Shark succeeds at establishing wild stakes within its wonderfully weird take on 18th century France. It serves up a memorable cast, a story that rewrites history in a fantastical way, all the while arming the player with tricks of the trade that’d make Penn and Teller blush. For a game that’s more about playing your opponent than your cards, Card Shark is a memorable adventure.

If you like fishing but want some relaxing time like animal crossing, this is definitely worth your time. I enjoyed it, am post game and still pick it up occasionally to relieve stress. Expand
