I understand the flaws that others have had with this game, but for me I have been having a blast. I never got to experience multiplayer in the original and so just being able to try it has been incredible. Really enjoying the experience and will probably continue doing so for a long time.

I am a fan of the old Squaresoft game "Secret of Mana" and this feels similar. Definitely a game made to be played with friends. A few things. I play this with my daughter at home locally. I bought 2 copies: 1 for our nintendo switch, and one for our ps4. players can also join from cellphone but I imagine the controls would be much harder. The convenience of the nintendo switch is good, just go portable and go to a friend's house. We are able to play side by side which is a big advantage, playing with a friend online would be good if you are in some kind of voice chat on your phone, something like discord. Playing multiplayer; all players DO have character progression, saves loot/levels but does not save world progression for players besides the host. That being said, it's no problem because we just have the host progress through the world, and I am able to join any playable level that we get to. I am able to just use the first town to do all of my buying, selling or crafting when we aren't in a level. We all still get the story experience, it is no problem. The multiplayer experience is extremely fun and rewarding, players work together to tank/heal/attack and use other magic. its not excessively complicating and is just plain fun. If you are looking for a fun coop game this is it, just make sure you are either playing with a friend in the same physical location or use some kind of voice chat . I can see how playing with a random person that sucks and you can't coordinate with could be frustrating like some of the other reviews say. Apart from that, I promise you will enjoy! Expand

The hardest review i've ever had to write both because of the points I have to dock and not being sure how much to dock. Crystal Chronicles is my favorite videogame of all time; that is to say, the original Gamecube release is. You can imagine my immense shock when the remaster was announced and it felt like someone at Square Enix snuck in to my house to find out what game to add next to their line up.

FIRST, the good. Crystal Chronicles core gameplay is ever faithful. The only true RPG Party Game i've ever played, running these dungeons with friends is memorable and you still form amazing memories. The sound track is BEAUTIFULLY remastered, the visuals are starkly upgraded, and the high res models make me realize details in the original designs I never noticed before. If you never played the original the storytelling, incredible level and boss design, and overall presentation are what make this game a gem.

The new content is great, the challenge dungeons are a good edition and essentially add thirteen new dungeons to the game built around high level characters. This fixes a pitfall of the original where, after your first playthrough, knowing how to get everything quickly means by year four you're way overpowered. Now you take those busted characters in to brand new challenging content.

Unfortunately, in the end, CC: Remastered is a slighty worse take on the original. A slightly worse take on a 10/10 can only be an 8/10 right? The problem is how the multiplayer works. Not just the lack of local multi, which is huge, but also the lack of being able to truly share this adventure. Friends can only join you during dungeons via online co-op. Only the host gets Myrrh, only the host gets letters, and at the end of the day only the host can partake in the road events and memories. The sensation of going on an adventure is gone in that way.

Another side effect of this is how hard it is to level all the profession families. Where as before you'd effectively be leveling four at a time, you can now do one at a time. Since you only get letters when you get Myrrh maxing out an entire village would take 40 years where it might normally take 10 or less. Little problems like this are numerous and all of them could easily be solved by adding local multi.

This is not a modern new game, it's a port from 2004 and they added a few nice things to it, so there are cutscenes that seem pointless but are there to add character cause that's what this game is. I'm honestly having a better time with this game now than in 2004 when I beat the game solo (cause that's all I had after a couple weeks after release). Expand

The game works wonders compared to the original version. The accessibility to multiplayer back then was horrible, and I remember as a kid it was a pain trying to convince anyone to get the stuff required for the multiplayer.

Surprisingly enough, the multiplayer functions work *really* well. Being able to see the people you follow/are friends with in the lobbies at the top of the list makes it super easy to join friends. Most communication is done using the "Y" or "Triangle" button in-game, but some players find it easier to spam cast spells in order to quickly tell someone about a direction to go in (typically for hidden secrets).

The game is grindy. There's no doubt about it and there never has been. The artifact system has always been in the game and the game actively encourages that you redo dungeons in order to obtain all the artifacts. If you were to truly 100% the game, you'd max out all 8 characters in the dungeons for artifacts. Artifacts are strictly the player-goal of the game, in order to make later dungeons easier to deal with. While of course, a player could say "No I don't need this" and skip artifacts for a challenge run, it's highly recommended that you take them.

The magic system is the exact same as it was before, as the game encourages using multiple people casting a spell in order to make it more powerful. Granted, it's not much issue when coordinating with friends, but with randoms, it's nearly impossible to pull off unless they have it as a mission on their end even when trying to ask for a Magic Attack coordination.

Voice acting is new in the game, and for a lot of my friends and myself, it's a bit of a hit and miss. i find it endearing that they went so far as to add voices in the game for a lot of characters, mimics included. Though I believe the problem mostly lies in the popular "Sub vs Dub wars" that people tend to have. I'm sure that if the game had Japanese audio (or otherwise) then there wouldn't be as much of a problem for some.

    PROs:
+ Music is good, if not the same as it was before
    + Gameplay is the same
+ Multiplayer is super easy to access and connecting with friends is simple
+ Story is simple to follow and gets fairly dark.
+ Mimic system (It's done well, and is a nice homage to their other titles)
    + Clavats just wanna live
+ Yukes have special access to their own town for free

    MEHs
± Not a personal fan of the remade opening song
± Communication is difficult in the middle of combat with randoms
± Artifact grind is as heavy as it was before, though easier now due to randoms further on in the game.
± Voice acting is hit and miss
± Character and monster models are not new, just up-res'd and done well. (Doesn't look like complete ass.)
± Lilties think they still own the world
± Clavats are just normal humans

    CONs
    - Nothing new is really added to the game, gameplay wise
    - You can't stay in a lobby with friends after completing one dungeon if you want to change to the next (Minor inconvenience if anything)
    - No more Local Co-op
    - Selkies are thieves, they stole my magicite
    - Yukes are still racist and charge everyone a fee to enter their town unless the visitor is a Yuke

The fact is that even without these new additions, I would still get the game regardless. Still, I'm grateful that we get this game with all this new stuff. However, as they say, the devil is in the details, and with the precision of an ice pick that pierces a big chunk of solid ice, little details are the demise of these chronicles. But let's not get too ahead, and let's talk about the new stuff before we get there.

The first thing you'll notice about this remaster is the HD graphics. The work fo the developers did in the Game Cube was outstanding in regards to art direction and visuals, and to find that they still hold up pretty well to this day is remarkable.

Back in the day when the original launched, I didn't have a sound system to enjoy the music as it should, but now that I have one, it was like falling in love with the same person all over again. As far as new music goes, I could only recall two new songs, and also every new dungeon has a rearranged song with different instruments or vocals. In some cases, I even prefer the new rearranged work. Usually, a remastered game doesn't have the luxury of having new songs but the fact that they went extra with one of the strong points of the original game it's pretty amazing.

When Square Enix first announced this game, they hinted that it will feature voice acting. I was hoping that it will have the option of hearing the Japanese voices, but as it seems for other important stuff, the voice acting was region-locked, so only Japanese audio for Japanese copies. I think the acting in FFCCR wasn't that bad; however, it wasn't that good either, so I turn off the VO.

The new dungeons are counterparts of the original ones, that means that 13 dungeons (not including the final dungeon) have a new skin. They also come with new re-skinned and re-sized enemies with more powerful attacks and swarms of them. They can present a real challenge, but unlike the original dungeons that increase their difficulty by each cycle you complete (capped at LVL 3), the new ones have a fixed difficulty. Although they're hard, once you complete them, there's not much reason to replay them because the spoils you get there are awkwardly sorted between them.

Given the number of enemies and difficulty, dungeons are meant to be played with at least two people. Which leads us to this remaster's main problem. The original game was a multiplayer game in its design, local multiplayer, to be precise.

Sadly, FFCCR doesn't build upon the multiplayer design of the original. It builds around its single-player. While it's not as bad as a lot of people say, it certainly is a different, more condensed, and sterile experience than what you get while playing multiplayer. Now, instead of being in the same caravan. You and your friends can only interact in dungeons, so a big part of the immersion is severed with this decision.

The main problem with this immersion-breaking decision it's more pronounced when doing dungeons together with friends. For some creative or technical desition, the only person that can get a Myrrh drop after beating a dungeon is the host, this means that for every one of us to complete a year playing together, we needed to play through 9 dungeons, and we could only choose from the exact pool of dungeons, so we ended repeating a lot of them over and over. The issue of advancing so slow through every year but getting stronger is that you overpower yourself too quickly, and it only makes your playtime more hollow and boring.

Clearly, playing together with friends was not the objective of the developers when making this remaster, because is easier to play at your own pace but one can only have so much fun playing with strangers, and because there are only preset messages that are very limited, to say the least, communication with other players isn't that fun. So more often than not, you'll be paired with people that maybe isn't on the same page as you in terms of how you want to proceed, attack, or navigate.

When everything's said and done, I have some fun playing this remaster with my friends, not in the way I would like and not even close to my experience with the original. Same with the NGC version it's hard to recommend this game and it feels like a huge missed opportunity, but if you played the original and liked it playing it solo I think this is the definitive version of that experience. But if you're looking for that game in regards to its multiplayer aspect, well, you better get some local friends and look on eBay for that GBA + cable link stuff.

It's incredibly disappointing that they essentially gutted this game of its main feature - experiencing a journey with your friends together. The original had events along the road that you and your friends would see together, and towns you could visit to do some crafting and shop. The remaster takes this feature and makes it much lonelier; trips to towns are solo, your caravan is a 1-person party at all times.

The multiplayer doesn't kick in until you go to a dungeon and you have the choice to host or join another game. There is almost no reason to join a dungeon unless you just want to grind. Only the host gets the myrrh at the end of the level and only the host will get letters from their family, it would have been great if guests also got these benefits.

Playing with a friend in person(Difficult atm, I know)/over voice chat is great, this is where the game's original promise starts to come to light. Running dungeons with friends is a lot of fun, and talking strategy before/during fights adds a lot to the game. My partner and I would be fighting a flying monster and coordinate magic to cast gravity, making the fight a cake walk, and it's great! All these years later, the game is still way better with friends.

I know this sounds like a lot of complaining, but that's because the original game was built around travelling the world together with friends, something that's entirely removed here. Despite this, the core gameplay is still a lot of fun. I loved this game when it first came out, and a lot of what's to love is still here, but it's a much lonelier version of that original game. If SE ever decides to patch the game to include this feature, my score would raise to a 9 easily. Here's hoping.

I think this game will suffer a very sad fate where its first release had a very expensive barrier to entry for multi-player so people just skipped it. Now the remastered version lowered that barrier to entry but in the process broke some of what made the co-op so great when it was released.

So few are going to really get to experience what this game has to offer unless you have 4 friends who you can bring into the house and a Gamecube laying around. I truly hoped for better with this remake but I'm still enjoying what the remake has given. I doubt future patches will fix it but if they could polish upload times, and offer an option to mute moggles I could bump this into the greens.

The game's multiplayer system is a map-by-map basis. You will not be traveling with your friends on this journey meaning that you all will have to play the same map multiple times for everyone to progress through the story.

They should have allowed the option for mog to carry the chalice in multiplayer because let us be honest, no one wants to hold that thing.

The game is very easy, simple, and lacks challenge. I haven't reached hard mode yet, but from what I've heard from friends/family is that it has limits and it's very disappointing. If you're looking for a challenge, this isn't it.

If you're looking for fun, this is lacking by miles. The gameplay is very simple and lacks depth. You can pretty much speed through the game without too much difficulty.

    3) Button config is old-fashioned. Remake does not mean copy-and-paste money-capture HD version. Game company has the responsibility to make the game fits to today’s environment and setting.
The original button config is designed for GBA, player needs to do everything such as attack, defense, spelling magics etc in an single “A button” and switch different modes by L and R.
But NS/PS4 have much more buttons compared to GBA, why don’t you just use them!? It will be fine by just coping the button system from DS.

    4) Language. Well, it depends on what region are you in. I believe players in HK and TW are disappointed as there are no Chinese subtitles.
I am Hong-Konger, in order to connect to multi-player in Asia (Ya, Region locked), I could only buy JP version instead of English version which I can understand.

Conclusion: My childhood and memories are ruined.
Don’t buy this unless you really really love FFCC.
I hope SE can see our messages and make improvements in the coming patches.

This remake completely ruined the multiplayer, which is the whole point of the game.

I was so happy to find out this game was going to get a remaster for the switch. I played a lot of it with friends of mine when I was younger, and was looking forward to sharing that experience with new friends of mine.

I'll be honest. If you are wanting to just get it to play solo, It is a wonderful and awesome game! But removing local co-op in a game that started with it, that is

But removing local co-op in a game that started with it, that is now on the switch is a huge blow to me. A large part of the marketing for the switch is that you can play local co-op in some games. The fact they took it out of a game really hurts the game play and experience of the game for me.

Then there is the lag issues in multiplayer. We have very good internet here. and me and my fiance were playing beside each other. the delay between him moving, or me moving was pretty big.

To me, They ended up messing up a HUGE part of what makes this game what it is.

No local multiplayer, online play limited to dungeons and region-locked (cannot co-op in towns, join the same caravan, on experience the world map events as a group) and only the host's progress is updated after a dungeon, making it tedious to play the game from start to finish with a group of friends, and content that could be experienced as a group on GC is now unavailable.

Load times are also worse than the Gamecube version and some bosses have framerate drops that weren't present on the GC version.
It's serviceable if you wanted to play the game solo because they added some quality of life improvements to solo play, if you don't mind worse frame rate and loading times than the GC ver, but cannot recommend for multiplayer play, especially if you were planning on doing the entire game with a set group of players.

This game already had a ton of problems and SE just made it worse. Can't believe it took this long to come out, because this game is trash.

I played the og FFCC and was excited to play this remaster. But after giving the demo an extensive shot I'm afraid it fell very short of the co-op experience it supposedly sets out to deliver. As a solo game its great and the added features and content are a plus. But if you come expecting to join up with your friends to have a joint adventure you'll quickly find out you don't actually integrate into the same caravan, rather you can only join each other in dungeons. Furthermore only the host story progresses, forcing your group to have to complete each dungeon up to 4 times so everybody's story advances. You don't travel nor share cutscenes together, nor can you explore towns nor trade items. It's more akin to you completing your solo campaign with occasional "guns for hire" helping out in dungeons than a coop campaign like we remember. Even then the game forces you to disband after every dungeon and reconnect as long as you can all be in the same map area... an additional condition that slows down gameplay.
For a game who's simple gameplay and quirky charm relied on giving players the chance to embark on a "caravan with your friends" this doesn't even technically allow that. So if you wish to experience the game as a solo playthrough, you'll have a blast. But if you hoped to adventure with your close friends or family you're better off skipping this entirely.

This game was ruined for me because of the removal of local multiplayer. Online multiplayer is not a sufficient compromise as the progress made by the host isn't shared with the player who joined. Anyone who played the original remembers how much of a nightmare local multiplayer was because of the required gba to gamecube adapter, but that would've been preferable to the product we're nowThis game was ruined for me because of the removal of local multiplayer. I'm not really sure what went wrong in development but the best way to enjoy this game was with friends. Yes it was fun solo, but not the best experience, so I don't understand why story progression with 1 caravan and 4 party members was removed entirely. My girlfriend and I prefer the gamecube to this; less load times, skippable cut scenes... Reminds me of when ff14 was first released... T_T

Some major caveats before buying this remaster. The local multiplayer mode has been removed completely and the online mode is region locked. There are some nice to have quality of life improvements to the game. Inventory space is unlimited now for instance and they added a helpful minimap. But the number of flaws in the original game which SHOULD have been adressed, but were not, far outweighs these. These are mostly minor annoyances like the 7-character limit for character names, the unresponsive menus, unskippable repetitive cutscenes, Mog getting easily tired in Solo mode, etc. None of these are dealbreakers, but they show an overall lack of thought and care that went into this remaster. Also, microtransactions have been added in. These are mostly cosmetics or progress skippers and forgoing them won't really influence the overall experience much, but it's a noteworthy bit of added on disappointment.

There was an opportunity to take a promissing but flawed game and polish it up into something really good here. Sadly, that's not what this is. This is a very bare bones remaster that adds little outside of the lackluster online functionality, and instead takes away some of the key features that made the original interesting to begin with. It is not a bad game in it's own right and you can definitely have some fun with it in solo mode. It is a horrible remaster though and the heart of the game, the multiplayer, only works under very specific circumstances.

I would also like to note that I contacted the Square Enix customer support over my issues with the multiplayer (before I found out it was in fact region locked) and only received unhelpful copy-paste answers that didn't commit to anything. Apparently they are "aware of the issue" but "can not promise any fixes for it".

This is an absolute must have for fans of the franchise, but also a fantastic game for those new to the series. Multiplayer and crossplay both work incredibly well, and offering both an inexpensive full version and a free lite version means everyone can play together, regardless of their device or budget.

Not the best Final fantasy to choose for a re-release and not the best remaster at all, with cumbersome online multiplayer and n o local co-op. Better save your money for the next entry in the franchise.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition is another classic FF game that featured a lot of revolutionary features for its time. Unlike other re-released FF games that aged like fine wine, however, Crystal Chronicles’ antiquated controls and half-step multiplayer additions don’t nearly stand the test of time, especially when there are so many games available that do loot-based dungeon-crawling far better and far more streamlined. For many modern gamers accustomed to the faster pace and tighter controls of said games, Crystal Chronicles may feel like an old relic that requires a hefty amount of patience. There’s no lack of charm in the visuals and character designs, and getting four synchronized party members together that can effortlessly chain spells together to unleash a powered-up super spell can lead to a decent time, but it also shows that some old games can be harder to revisit due to the rapidly-evolving technology surrounding videogames.
