The story is again the strongest point, but the cinnamon to oatmeal ratio here isn’t a great one. The battle system is certainly dressed up, but rarely goes anywhere exciting. In a quieter period I might have recommended this to RPG fans willing to forgive its healthy share of flaws, but we’ve been up to our ears in great RPGs of late and I don’t expect that flood to let up anytime soon.

Fallen Legion: Rise to Glory had its share of boss encounters that seemed unbalanced, but I never felt as frustrated as I did with Revenants. I found myself much less interested in the characters or plot of Fallen Legion Revenants, and it’s probably safe to just say I liked everything about this game less than its predecessor. I’m honestly disappointed. If developers YummyYummyTummy announce another Fallen Legion title, I promise they’ll get my attention, but I’m going to have to wait a little longer this time before I let myself get excited.

The reviews for this series seems to be harsh from paid reviewers because of a few bugs in the original release in 2021, but the issues were addressed within a few weeks. Players of the recent rerelease/ports to current gen/PC need not worry about performance.

The game runs great, plays great, and has an awesome cast plus love choices matter integration like the first game, but the side-scrolling elements isn't automated only like the first game and you get a chance to explore a bit and enjoy the world a bit more outside of battle and customization.

Anyways, fantastic game and lovely succesor.

While seeming simple atThis game has managed to provide me with nearly 300 hours of enjoyment and has been may favorite Switch game of 2021. While seeming simple at first, the different paths the narrative can take surprised me quite a few times; as did NPC reactions to various choices made. The "speed diplomacy" sections were very unexpected and serve to keep excitement levels high. Battles are a rare take where it's both an action based fighting system AND you don't rely on AI party members. Basically a real time version of Valkyrie Profile or Indivisible where you are HIGHLY reward for being able to time "Perfect Blocks". The element of shifting your party and the enemy between tiles evokes the Mega Man Battle Network series as well. Any fan of those games should give this a try, with the 2+hr and save progress-able demo.

It's certainly not perfect, as the developers don't have AAA resources. I feel the Meta Score and most release reviews were unfairly lowered by game crashing bugs that the developers worked diligently to fix within a few weeks. It's been smooth sailing since the April patches and their twitter says they intend to add further content to it in an update to coincide with the Japanese release.

In general there's a need for a bit more transparency in the UI. How does gear X compare to gear Y. It could use hints as to why various choices locked out; what stage of favor is each NPC at, which potion is the party carrying, how far along is each side-quest goal mid mission, how close was the end level performance to reaching next rank, etc.? The way it hands saving (autosaves one file per User with options to New Game Plus to chapter breaks) is a bit unorthodox and could be more user friendly. It might also benefit from a easier difficulty mode for people without the reflexes to survive some of the hardest boss encounters.

Some allege the fighting can drag on, but I feel that doesn't become an issue when you either switch up your team for variety or learn how to most effectively take out enemies quickly. Visiting the Randomly generated Arena levels for more powerful accessories can make a big different in power.

Beyond those opportunity for growth: between the originality of of the story and systems, the excellent voice performances, and the high replay-ability, this is an obscure gem you don't want to miss.

The character design and voice acting were well done and the battle elements certainly make for an interesting twist on side scrolling RPGs. The diverse amount of exemplars really allows you to build a team that best suits your style of play. The story could have been explained a bit more (especially in the beginning), and the lack of save files is disappointing, but overall the game is a challenging and enjoyable experience. If you are looking for an RPG that is different from your average turn based affair, give Fallen Legion Revenants a try. Expand
