Etrange Overlord is packed with personality, with a story and songs that show love for the shojo trope where the villainess is actually the good guy. Etrange herself is a standout, and it’s silly and over-the-top without being ridiculous. But as delightful and refreshing as the narrative and soundtrack can be, the battles get boring fast. It’s incredibly repetitive! But at least those stages tend to be short, so you can race through them and get back to the campy story.

Etrange Overlord is one of the more unique action RPGs I’ve played in quite some time; hard to not be when the game is basically a musical set in hell. Its unique gameplay elements, cast of characters, and sense of humor carry it through when the action and setting start to wear thin.

Etrange Overlord marks the first step in the indie journey of Disgaea's legendary creator. Though short, it carves out its own identity. While the gameplay can feel a bit repetitive, the characters' humor and charisma will keep you glued to your seat until the very end of Étrange Von Rosenburg's journey.
