    As people who’ve been following the site for quite some time should be well aware, if there’s an oddball game out there to play I’m generally down for it. With just the basic pitch in Embr being a sort of virtual firefighter game it would already grab peoples’ attention, but thankfully it goes the extra mile to make things more interesting. With just the basic pitch in Embr being a sort of virtual firefighter game it would already grab peoples’ attention, but thankfully it goes the extra mile to make things more interesting. First, throw in some unexpected wackiness in the controls and equipment, then open it up for local multiplayer confusion and competition, then add in alternative escape or heist-like missions into the mix, and there’s a lot more to meat on the game’s bones than you may expect. That said, its off-center nature may be fun but it can also be frustrating, and it’s possible that the honeymoon period where the wackiness keeps things fun and exciting may not sustain itself for long. If you’re a fan of weirdness, learning tricks as you go, perhaps playing with some friends, and keeping things loose this can be a great time, but if you’re into more traditional experiences results are more likely to vary.

    Embr delivers on its promise of frantic firefighting chaos. However, with performance issues and multiplayer snags raining down on the Switch version, it’s a weaker experience compared to the crossplay-enabled counterparts.

    The core gameplay is fertile ground for some great emergent moments in solo or multiplayer, and the game is chock full of content. Each mission has bonus challenges such as meal delivery or demolition, and there are escape missions, boss battles, difficulty options, loadouts, upgradable items, and cosmetics. Even if you only play strictly single-player, Embr has so much to offer were it not hampered by the visual noise, performance and control issues, and truly frustrating physics. In a lot of ways, playing Embr felt like playing a very promising early access game that would be worth waiting for the arrival of a polished 1.0 release. The devs even included an easy feedback system for bugs, framerate, controls, and gameplay issues in the main and pause menus. But I can only review the product in hand, which though built on solid foundation, quickly crumbles down.

    Embr has the potential to be a good time, a slapstick bit of carnage with friends that provides a decent amount of missions to blast through and plenty of unlockables and variations on modes to keep you and your party of first responders busy. However, on Switch this potential goes almost entirely unrealised as the online component of the game is a bust. Get a few Switch-owning friends to set up a match and you may find some fun here but without crossplay, and factoring in a few other gameplay irritations, this one is quite hard to recommend on Nintendo's console.
