Witty, charming and earnest, Dream Daddy is a breakout surprise on Switch. If you’re a fan of visual novel storytelling and open to narratives beyond anime, DD belongs in your library. I’m middle aged, and neither a Dad nor same-sex oriented, and still find the gaming screamingly funny and heartwarming.

As a heterosexual male I had an absolute blast playing this. Humor and narration are both on point. If a funny, satirical visual novel sounds like fun to you, I definitely recommend getting this game.

From the people that would rather an actual gay man (online known as DingDong) kill himself than accept any criticism that the game they were making was exploitative.

    Summary:

"Back in 2017, Ding Dong and Julian both spoke up about Game Grumps' then upcoming game Dream Daddy, a game advertising itself as a gay dad dating sim. Put simply, they didn't like it, it felt exploitive and pandering, but if it made someone except who they are so be it. Publicly, Brian and Suzy went on damage control saying that it's not a cash grab and that they had nothing to do with beta testing. But behind the scenes things were much much worse.

Ding Dong was doxed, his family members were called, and he was outed as gay, something he had not told them yet. The other employees who complained to him and urged him to say something about the game backpedaled, throwing blame directly on him. With everything that happened Ding Dong attempted suicide and thanks to his partner Julian, Ding Dong is still alive to this day, but it's clear the damage had been done." By and large, Dream Daddy succeeds at creating developed characters that have unique stories, interesting dialogue, and fun personalities. I wouldn’t call anything here realistic; the cul de sac where the game takes place feels like a dreamy land where only the happiest characters exist, despite the hardships that they discuss. Dream Daddy looks great in handheld and TV mode, and this version boasted a handful more optional scenes, but nothing strikingly new in comparison to the rest of the dates.

Personally, I’ve always enjoyed a nice dialogue choice-based storytelling game, on the road! Another thing worth mentioning is: Many can find enjoyment in Dream Daddy, no matter the sexuality you possess — though depending on it, one might enjoy such more. Hence my scoring, as a genre enthusiast. I haven’t played a meaningful dialogue selection game in awhile, so this was a refreshing change in pace.

There are countless visual novels devoted to dating a bunch of very busty women, but few that turn that trope onto its head; Dream Daddy does that through objectifying men. Not in a mean way, or even an overly-sexual way – instead, Dream Daddy makes virtual dating wholesome and punny. It shows the importance of community and friendship, especially for a single parent. It’s not so much about the dating as it is exploring new interests through new people. I’m so appreciative of the experience.
