Don't listen to the ones that are rating this game a 0, they obviously never played this version. They are most likely ps4 people that are butthurt that they don't have the definitive version. We get extra quest, music that doesn't sound like crap, 2d mode and some quality of life improvements

Dragon Quest XI S: Echos of an elusive age - Definitive Edition is one of the best turn based JRPG's on the market.

As for gameplay, you get the full experience that was on the PS4 and Steam versions but with more added content, life improving changes, a better orchestrated soundtrack and a 2D mode.
Dragon Quest XI S is as traditional as a JRPG gets and it doesn't try to be something else.

    So should you buy this?
Already played the Steam/PS4 versions? Maybe, I played the Steam version for over 120 hours and was left hungry for more.
Haven't played this and love JRPG? Definitely
Never played a JRPG before? Try the generous 5-10 hour demo first (and then buy it, demo savegames carry over to the full game)

Whoever picked this up thinking they were going to get a modern JRPG FF or Persona-like experience or a BotW level open world was not well informed. Don't judge a game on what you want it to be, but review it based on how well it achieves what it CLAIMS to be.

And Dragon Quest XI S delivers just right on that. It's all we love about the traditional JRPG genre that it created. Dragon Quest was never there to try to revolutionize the genre but rather to stay true to its roots as its creator, and it does just that. I am of course no professional reviewer, but having played at least 10 hours into all the previous games of the series (Except Dragon Quest X), I think I can give a pretty good overview of how it compares to the others.

In terms of the gameplay, it sticks to the traditional but efficient turn-based system, but adds on some novelties with pep powers and skill trees that make you reflect more on the build of your character. This skill tree is a welcome addition in contrast to just waiting for the character to unlock the exact list of spells and abilities they were given from the start, tho more limited than a potential class changing system, which we understandably couldn't expect seeing how they put a lot of work into animating the character specific capacities. Overall, it's similar to before, but enjoyable and somewhat refreshing nonetheless, with those little additions. As for exploration, it's DQ-style treasure hunting at its best. The areas are not "open world" per say, but DQ games never were open worlds, yet it still manages to get you pumped to look for treasures in secret areas around the world, and loves teasing you by showing you more treasures you cannot access yet. There's enough of a hunt to keep you interested in each area, but not too much that it eats up the rest of your game time and becomes irritating. Only downside was the difficulty of the game overall, which can somewhat be surpassed by activating one of the many Draconian challenges, tho those may then make the game too difficult for some. These Draconian "Quests" along with the 2D mode, are still well worth mentioning as great means of diversifying gameplay and allow for multiple enjoyable playthroughs

No questions need to be asked for the soundtrack, as long as you have the symphonic version on, you'll definitely be enjoying yourself a lot. A few themes reappear maybe too frequently, but they're well crafted and memorable. It gives off that Dragon Quest vibe now in HQ like we rarely got before in any DQ games (Thanks Sugiyama ^^')

As for the length of the game, I haven't finished it to say, but I've reached 40hrs and walkthrough seem to be telling me I am barely not even halfway through the story. Even in a straight line, the game offers more than enough content as a JRPG, compared to a lot of modern games, and much more if you are a completionist, with lots of side content, like quests, special requests by the mysterious Tockles, some fun at the casino (I guess... I dunno, that was the one place I hated in all DQ games), completing the bestiary and achievements, and more! And there's some additional post-game content I of course haven't touched yet

I cannot rate the story in its entirety as I have not finished the game, however I will say that as I have experienced for now, it's some DQ at it's finest, with tragic pasts, destinies to save the world, and darkness taking over. The 3D look really helps you dive into the story even more, the cutscenes are well animated and you truly feel like you're having a grand adventure full of ups and downs. Don't expect some sort of crazy depth to the story that makes you reflect on the meaning of life. But I'm sure some of the twists will surprise you, and some of the harsh moments will get to you (I mean, look at that silent protagonist, the poor thing always looks sad haha)

As for the graphics, tho I never owned the PS4 version, I can definitely say that this is not the version to go for if you want the best visual quality. But if you only own a Switch or if you want a more complete game over graphics, this is the version to go. In fact, the game really make the most of what the console can achieve, even in portable mode, with fluid animations, a nearly constant fps, nice lighting effect, and more to keep the world truly feeling alive. The environments and panoramas are undeniably beautiful, and each city feels unique and truly alive. I'm just really disappointed in the water effects, which seeing what the Switch could do with other games, could've been better

Overall, Dragon Quest XI S on Switch is the true culmination of 30 years of a beautiful franchise, with lively cities to discover, bizarre monsters as ever, and an epic quest to save the world. I would rate it a 9/10 but I'll give it 10/10 to combat the unnecessary hate

Los añadidos a esta versión (banda sonora orquestada, historias de personajes, modo 2d, etc.) hacen, junto a la portabilidad de esta versión, un producto redondo muy recomendable.

Boss fights are almost easier than those in Chrono Trigger. Heck regular encounters in MegaTen games or some FF games are harder than bosses in DQ11. The game gives you a lot of options to be creative in those fights, but really all you have to do is buff your party and finish the boss in 3-4 turns.

However, I think this game isn't forgiving enough for those new to the genre and battle style. It certainly doesn't help that there really isn't much of a tutorial to understand its battle features.

DQXIS also suffers from an abysmal save feature. Essentially, if you're at a boss, and your party is wiped out, then you're back to the last autosave or worse. It's not fun trekking through the same dungeons and environments so many times during the most difficult battles when you just want to have another go at a boss. Even after 15 hours, though I only fell to a boss once or twice before figuring out a better strategy, having to trek back was once or twice too many times.

I applaud the game's other special features, such as a 2D mode style, but its other problems do not warrant such high scores. I wanted to love it, but I just could not.

In the S version slime island was also nerfed. No metal slimes in act 1 at all. Youre forced to use electro to spawn any. I save wizard’d my save on ps4 because its bs.

If visual novel bs quests werent bad enough, nearly all quests have such a poor description on them that youre playing a freaking guessing game on what to do. People on Gamefaqs have 6+ pages long of replies just to answer how to complete one sinple freaking mission and they end up arguing about how its done. This is absolutely poor game design.

SE forgot this is an RPG not a Visual Novel. And Ultra speed in the S version isnt even ultra, its normal. I had quit mid act 1 the first version because of the animation speed being crap.

The new act 2 quests are equally bad. Its just another 2 hours of complete visual novel GARBAGE.

To me, games like this can be saved by a good OST. This however has a really old fashioned OST. It isn't even remotely memorable. For comparison, I didn't like XCDE very much but I still listen to the OST loads.

    DQ 11 is a failure.

Would recommend. This is the best jrpg I've played since Ni No Kuni 2

This game gets it right where most other jrpgs drops the ball:
    * Skilltrees are interresting and fun, with a lot of variating builds
    * Combat is entertaining
    * You're never really punished for committing to invest in a character

Imperfect version of a game gem originally released on PS4 and PC
It has a brutal graphic downgrade and doesn't do justice to the original release of 2018.

Do not stop after the credits roll the first time! The game's true ending and plot unfolds after the credits. This wasn't explained very well, but is how the game is meant to be played. And what a game...so addicting! While the inventory menu is a bit clunky, and the characters aren't fleshed out as well as they could have been, it's still one of the best experiences I've had on the switch!

Definitely one of the best JRPGS i've ever played. My nostalgia got hit pretty good.
Epic from start to finish, filled with great characters and a compelling story. Not much to complain about this game.
I just wish the soundtrack was better used and the enemy variety was bigger. Other than that, this is the best in the franchise.

While at first the characters were charming and the quest fairly interesting, the story is just meandering from reason for it to keep going to reason for it to keep going using anime power up tricks and such. In addition, Akira Toriyama's art design of monsters is extremely hit or miss here, with half or more of the monsters looking like off-brand toys for very young children.

The game also feels very cheap in a number of other ways, for instance you get to a cool new area only to hear the same exact music for every other area, then you go in a cave and hear the exact same music for every other cave and dungeon. This game is doing as little as it can to make a profit, making sure to extend the playtime so people don't complain. This game is very disappointing, and I am appalled at the praise it has received by players and critics alike.

Not grinding.

The story at first seems standard fantasy fare. But the moment you step out from your village the world comes alive. Whereas Final Fantasy feels like high opera, this is more an epic Odyssey combined with touches of the Brothers Grimm and Disney. (But always with an adult edge.)

The detailed and lively towns you visit are filled with interesting NPCs & hilarious dialogue, in keeping with past games. Castles and caves are a joy to fight in and explore. You learn to know and love every member of your party. The art by Akira Toriyama gives it a Dragonball-ish feeling, with each new location bringing a new mini adventure.

The game has some tiny flaws but nothing big. The pacing of the game slows down a bit towards the end, as in most RPGs, when you prepare for the final battle by assembling artifacts. (what else?) The post-game section is a neat idea but drags at times — and, for once, requires grinding.

Bottom line: this is one of the best RPGs I’ve ever played at a time when I thought I’d exhausted my options (BOTW, Elder Scrolls, Dark Souls, Divinity: Original Sin, Witcher) and after a slightly disappointing experience with Persona 5 and Final Fantasy VII Remake (both overly long with pacing issues imo). I highly recommend it.

In terms of the game world, it was a delight to explore. There was a fairly typical selection of environments and a vast array of enemies to keep me occupied. However, the game dragged it's heels more than I'd like during Act 2 and revisiting areas became a tad tedious.

The fights were enjoyable, although relatively easy considering I had no experience with the series. If I was to be picky I'd have preferred a bit more of a challenge! Later in the game the boss fights can be rewarding as long as you don't go into them over-levelled.

All in all, my first experience with the Dragon Quest series was a great one. The game kept me hooked although it was slightly too easy and the story fairly stereotypical. There were also a couple of annoying companions that started to get on my nerves after 50 hours, hence the 8/10. Great game, lots of content and a highly enjoyable experience!

Obviously, 11 looks better than 8, but I don't think it looks better in 2020 than 8 did 2004. 8 was top of class in its day, and 11, well, it looks nice, and some of the lighting effects are quite good, but I think the higher degree of precision and resolution makes it a bit more obvious that Akira Toriyama can only draw 3 face types, 3 eye shapes, and 3 hair styles, then mix and match.

Minor spoiler here, but when I got to the Havens, the island floating in the air with white, semi-spherical buildings built upon it, I actually though to myself "oh god, not Mr. Popo". And lo and behold, there he was, in his palette-swapped glory.

Gameplay-wise, it doesn't stray far from the formula. Don't be fooled by the movable characters and camera, they do not affect the battles in any way, it's just for show. The slightly updated battle system with characters picking their attacks on right as they are about to act is nice, but it does make the game easier. In fact, it's by far the easiest DQ game I've played. It's possible to up the difficulty with certain options, but at the baseline, it's not a difficult game.

"You don't even need to use buffs!" - Matador

I've always had some basic issues with the battle mechanics in DQ. Attack spells aren't that useful or damaging, especially in the later part of the game where some low-MP physical skills can do so much damage. There are always a few skills that are so vastly superior to everything else, there's no reason to use anything else (*cough cough* Sword Dance). Elemental attributes don't seem to ever add extra damage to enemies. For example, I've never seen Jade's Crushed Ice do more damage than Multithrust, even against obviously flame-based enemies. I mean, I'm in a freaking volcano for chrissakes.
Status effects are useful early/mid-game, especially with Erik's Persecutter and Victimiser skills, but Erik's late-game damage output make him and status effects kinda obsolete. His steal skill still works at best 50% of the time, even against the first enemies you meet in the game.
There's a weird scaling effect for enemies with high defense, where lower powered attacks do 1 point of damage, making, again, Erik kinda useless if he's using a multi-hit weapon.
    I don't know why
Breath attacks seem to hit for consistent damage regardless of defense. Chimeras (wyverns for you old-schoolers) will hit for 10 points of damage, then do a breath attack for 70 points of damage to the whole team, lol wut.

I'm complaining a lot about the battle system, but for the most part I still enjoy it. I really enjoy the option to speed up battles, and outside of battles, there are lots of quality of life improvements that make it so much more accessible. Zooming from inside dungeons is nice, the horse makes travelling quite a bit more efficient, having access to the Fun-Sized Forge anywhere is super convenient and the recipe system is way less of a crapshoot compared to DQ8. Load times seem shorter than DQ8, though apparently it's longer than on other platforms.

The soundtrack is pretty good, but I don't like the overworld theme. Compared to DQ8's soothing track, which made me want to just gaze at the scenery serenely, DQ11's is kind of aggressive and intense.

The story is a bit of a departure for a DQ game. I'm surprised Dunkey didn't say "it's a silly game with serious moments". For the most part, the tone is light-hearted, but there are some surprisingly grim bits here and there. The doom and gloom is well done, and the secondary characters have fairly interesting arcs. Sadly, once you get halfway through the second act, things go back to normal "save the world from evil so-and-so" stuff. I wish it were a bit less predictable near the end, because I really think the game has some good heartfelt moments, but the game loses all that tension as you inch towards the end. Then the last act feels like DLC filler, and I completely lost interest.

Anyway, this review is way too long, but the long and short of it is: It's a Dragon Quest game, it plays like Dragon Quest, it looks like Dragon Quest, it takes forever to finish like Dragon Quest, and it's very accessible for a Dragon Quest title.

Voice acting is nice and helps the storytelling along. The whole game has a fairy tail feel thats a nice contrast to games that need to be dark and edgy all the time. This special edition also enhances the game for a fresher experience, offering things like an orchestrated soundtrack, the option to use DQ8 music for certain areas such as the open world sections. (also orchestrated) the game also includes the 2-D mode for older school fans, but personally this feature wasn't as good as I'd hoped. The music does'nt change to match the old school graphics, which in my opinion would have helped with the immersion of it. The other issue I have with 2-D mode is that transitioning from 3-D to 2-D and vice versa isn't as seamless as they led us to believe. You need to restart at certain chapters and replay segments to continue, and the game doesn't seem to tell you when a new checkpoint is reached. You can even abuse this given you have the patience as the game saves your items/levels from the point you go back, and since all chests are replaced upon going back, you can do things like restart a chapter, loot rarer items like stat seeds and equipment, and repeat for as long as you want. The game also has a ton of Quality of life changes that make the game much easier. There's the ability to forge items anywhere instead of just at campsites, and even the ability to buy missing ingredients for forging without visiting shops. (though some items must be found) You can also summon your horse with an item rather than only at certain points helping with travel. And even a battle speed change to zip through fights and grind exp faster. The game also tossed in a new side quest that caries throughout the game, that shifts the action to 2-D and has you doing mini quests in the worlds of the previous 10 DQ games. (which is amazing for longtime fans of the series) In total the game is an amazing port, but those whom already own it on PC or PS4, can skip this one if they don't care about the extra features. There's also the dreaded "Nintendo Tax" where the game is going to be far more expensive than the other platforms. Sure you get some extra content but the original versions still give you a grand experience. For fans of old school RPG's this game is a MUST, as well as the best thing Square Enix has produced in a long long time. Expand

Do I recommend it? 100%. It is really good.

I would give it a 9/10 if the combat would give the player more information like how long does a buff/debuff last, how many hp do the enemies have (roughly), what are they weaknesses, what spells do they use and what school are those spells. That would allow more preperation and all in all more satisfying combat.

The Switch version is definitely the superior version. Tons of added content, quality of life improvements and a superior audio experience. A must buy.

This game is one of the best JRPGs I've ever played, well let's review this.

The cast of characters is all quite interesting and they show personality.

Depending on your perspective, this might be one of the best JRPGs that you might ever play and according to me, this was a fun experience, Dragon Quest XI S is up there with FFX and KH2. For me, this was a great experience, it does have a few minor/major flaws, but I'm willing to overlook them. The game gets a score of 9.8!

I love this game!!! Never really played a Dragon Quest game before this one, but now I am going back to play the older ones as well. Now I understand why all of Japan nearly comes to a halt when a new Dragon Quest game is released! A must play Switch port for any RPG fan!

Boring and repetitive in lots of aspects, not the best JRPG from this generation, particulary Ys VIII shines if compared to it. The best part is sylvando, veronica and jade.

One of the best RPGs of all time, polished beyond believe. There is so much to do and the characters are all extremely likeable!

Absurdamente largo y aburrido. Sobra medio juego.

Dragon Quest hasen't changed at all in over 20 years.. And that's okay to me! If you want classic JRPG play DRAGON QUEST XI! But I have to say the bonus content is cool for the Switch but the secret final boss is impossible so f u Square Enix. And this game doesn't look that great but atleast it runs well!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I only played this game because the main character was in smash ultimate and i gotta say that i really enjoyed my time playing this game. i first play the demo that came one month before the actually game and it was a very long demo like ten hours long. I felt like it should have ended where the main character and Erik jump off the cliff to save their self from being captured by the heliodor knights instead of unexpectedly ending on me, i felt like that would be a better hook anyway I still ended up buying the whole game. i manged to finished the game in 60-70 hours which is consider a lot for $60 dollar game so if you have a switch and gotten all the first party Nintendo games i would recommend you to buy this game and if you have both a switch and ps4 or PC. i would still recommend you to buy this game for the switch even though it's a little downgrade in graphic and quality, there are many things that you couldn't have done on the ps4 like running in the game that is on the switch and many other inspect that improve the quality of playing on the switch. If you like old school turn based JRPGs this is really nice. It isn't mind blowing and honestly plot wise it's a little too tame and vanilla for me to love but it's very well told. As a FF series fan playing his first Dragon Quest I really liked that it is told and paced more like a Shonen manga series with multiple short self contained arcs that fit in to a larger story, rather than how FF does it (often feeling like a really long movie). It made it very consumable over a long period of time and kept it engaging. Even if the big bad felt far away there was always something to do within the area around me that felt like it mattered.

This game seriously **** needs more music tho. It's OST is pitifully small for how insanely long this game is.

Great game, great characters. It felt really charming, at start at the very least, kinda dragged on for a while. The plot was pretty decent. Enjoyable and charming JRPG

It's a fun game with a vast amount of content, but one that just feels a bit hollow compared to other JRPGs on the market. Expand

I’m sorry but you should ignore the reviews that claims this game to be one of the “best”, because this is not true.

Don’t get me wrong, this is a very good game, but to pretend it is one of the best, is like comparing a Michelin star to Mario cart star. Are you happy that it turned up? Of course. Does it live up to expectations? Maybe. Is it everything you wanted? No. While the story

While the story and gameplay will keep you amused, is suffers from that old problem that the story offers nothing new and the characters are as plain as a cheese cracker. I feel like the only reason this has a average of 9+ is because people are viewing it through rose coloured glasses. It offered nothing new to the RPG world, and try’s nothing new, but is it terrible,.. no. And that’s just it’s issue. It’s not brave enough. A slight tough mid game boss here, and a ridiculously easy dungeon puzzle there, while there is no need to rave about it, it will do... and that’s all it will offer, a fairly run of mill game and story that is only viewed as good due to the ones who can’t see past the Nintendo exclusive offer.

Overall, there are not many negative things I can say about Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition. This version took the foundation of an already truly excellent RPG experience and built upon it further, offering new features and quality of life improvements along the way. I poured over a hundred and twelve hours into Dragon Quest XI S, which is more than I've spent on any other RPG recently, and I never once looked back with regret as I wholeheartedly fell in love with the gameplay and story. Having only played Dragon Quest XI S, I can't say for certain if there is enough new content here to warrant an additional playthrough, but if you've yet to play Dragon Quest XI and have access to a Nintendo Switch, this version is truly the "Definitive Edition" that the title claims it is.

This game has become my favorite Dragon Quest ever, one of my favorite JRPGs ever and certainly one of the best games you can buy and play on the Switch. [Issue #43 – November/December 2019, p. 8SH]

Dragon Quest XI S is a game for both long-time fans and newcomers alike. There are many Easter eggs and references to past Dragon Quest games that will subtly reward fans, but at the same time, the charming world of Erdrea and its characters are appealing to newcomers of all ages. Even those who have played the previous versions of Dragon Quest XI may find the vast improvements of the Switch version compelling enough for another round, especially with the Tickington quests, new character content, and marriage options. This game is a masterpiece, and it sets a new high standard for not only the series, but console RPGs in general. Hopefully the series will continue outdoing itself with further instalments.
