Doctor Who: The Edge of Reality is an improvement on the original release, but it suffers from weak visuals on the Switch.

Doctor Who: Edge of Reality is a bit like a hastily put together reunion show. They’re hitting all the beats you’d expect, and you’ll see every fan favorite make an appearance, but the story itself feels like cobbled together, mediocre fan-fiction rather than something from one of the most celebrated science fiction shows of all time. The gameplay itself is inoffensive if not horribly inventive, and makes a decent attempt at implementing some nice variety. This Switch version, however, is just not very fun to play. It is poorly optimized to a damaging degree and turns what could be a meandering but enjoyable experience into one of the more rough experiences I’ve had on the platform. There is some fun to be had here surfing along the great wibbly-wobbly, but it’s probably better done on a different system.

While there is a lot to like in Doctor Who: The Edge of Reality, this port basically makes it unenjoyable. While it's possible to play this to completion, and the content is all there, it's recommended to play this on a different platform, where there are less compromises.

A bijou Doctor Who experience, Edge of Reality is impressively dedicated to the beloved TV show but unfortunately suffers in its transition from VR exclusive to traditional console game. Limited inputs and fetch-questy scenarios hardly inflame the imagination and it's not until the game's last quarter that things start to feel more tailored for the Switch — because they are. It's too short and there aren't enough clear save points (we lost a fair amount of progress when we quit during the first area to play something else and it simply hadn't saved the game yet) but the fact that performance is so all over the place is Edge of Reality's main issue, and one that will absolutely affect your enjoyment of an otherwise serviceable adventure. Overall, it's the most cautious of recommendations to Doctor Who fans, then. Everyone else almost certainly need not apply.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game feels small, being completed in just 4 hours. The story is barebones, and i spend more time walking around, expecting a chase, or a puzzle, or something fun. All i find is the same interactions, and not enough puzzles to be fun, and a couple short backpeddle on the sprint button chases. The game needed more puzzles, and preferably ones that work. The butterfly lifecycle puzzle was done by guesswork, as the images didnt load, and the game felt... Unpolished. Not worth my £16. Expand

There's a lotThis game is a glitchy mess with all sorts of frame rate related issues and doesn't even know what type of game it wants to be. There's a lot of wandering around, trying to figure out what the game is supposed to do and sometimes you can't even actually do what it's trying to get you to do, so you are stuck there listening to the advice of the NPC trying to tell you what to do, while struggling to do it. The story of the game itself is good and I think most Doctor Who fans would enjoy that aspect of it, BUT that's the only enjoyable aspect of this game. Do not buy this game. Do not play this game. If you have any interest, just go watch a youtube play through. This game is absolutely horrible. Expand
