The only thing keeping me going was the incredible story telling. I absolutely can not stress enough how good of a story this was. It truly is an art piece that should be played on any other system except for Switch.

The crashing just is so unacceptable. If you're not prepared for it, you could lose an hour of progress as there is no reliable autosave feature.

This one is hard to judge because the game itself is legitimately a 9/10 or even 10/10. A fantastic combination of RPG and murder mystery game as long as you are OK with lots of dialoge.

The technical side of things is a lot rougher though. I don't mind that the Switch version has regular framedrops because I honestly don't think it matters for this type of game. But what genuinely bothers me are the load times, the buggy controls and occasional crashes.

The loading is not great but OK in isolation. However there are times where you go through several long load screens in quick succession and that stuff really adds up. Wish they had found a less intrusive solution.

The controls don't always do what you want them to do. I don't know if it's pathfinding issues but sometimes you need to repeat inputs in order for the character to actually do the right thing. It's not game breaking but annoying when your character just wanders off in the opposite direction of where you wanted him to go before you course correct and he actually performs the intended action.

The crashes are self-explanatory. Sometimes you loose several minutes of progress and have to go through several loading screens to get to where you were before. It doesn't happen too often but when it does it really sucks.

So all in all this is a very good game that's bogged down by its poor technical state on Switch though I heard some of these problems like ridiculous loading or crashes even carry over to other platforms as well. So this may just be a very buggy game in general. I still recommend it though if you can handle the issues I brought forward. I'll give it a 7/10 for being a 10/10 experience that is brought down by three technical issues which each knock a point off my rating.

What most reviews don't tell you is that this is a game that largely takes place in your own mind. It is a prose novel that you play. So the extended loading times and trekking across the same terrain allowed me to reflect on what had just happened to me. The gameplay depends entirely on you remembering what people said to you and imagining the mostly un-pictured world around you. You don't get to kill anyone. You can't act badly without being punished. You're just an insignificant individual trying to make his way in a harsh world that existed well before you and doesn't care if you succeed or fail. You will know IMMEDIATELY if this isn't the kind of game you want to play, then you will go online and score it a 1. Everyone else will be sucked into its vortex. Expand

The best RPG game ever. Final Cut is absolute amazing, 5x better than original (cool) game. This is more an interactive and fascinating book with amazing voice actors, art style and music, than a classical game. Love it!

This is one of the best games out there, hands down. It's so rich of storytelling, gameplay mechanics are spot on, let's not forget about the fact it has some great voice-acting in it as well. For anyone that loves detective stuff, puzzling, multiple choice and so on, it's a must-play.

Disco Elysium is truly unlike anything I’ve ever player in more than thirty years of gaming and it translates the traditional ‘pen and paper’ style role playing game into a fascinating and unique video game. The twisting plot, great cast of characters and sheer level of choice offered depending on how you choose to focus your stats ensures that every one of the thirty or so hours spent in this world are worthwhile and I can’t wait to see what the creators do next.

An additional note for those worried about this Switch port should know that the recent patch has solved virtually all the issues people were having.

If you are debating on playing this game, consider this: It's like reading a good book. It's slow paced and heavily text based and narratively driven. When you invest time however you will get much in return.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What a fantastic game. This is a piece of media totally unlike any I have experienced. The writing and the dialogue are fantastic. The characters are very strong. I related with Harry du Bois very strongly. Kim is lovely. The corporate boat lady, the crazy tie, the electro music fans, Klaasje, the poetic lorry driver, the custom dice maker, the union boss and the goons - a lot of strong and memorable characters. Really loved the skills system, and how you can get in dialogue with your empathy or authority skills - basically thinking and inner monologue but reflected in gameplay, which is genius to me. The music was similarly great, I sometimes put it on background when I work. The ending was good too - it was unexpected and random, but also very sad (to emphatize with the killer), they want for an existentialist ending I guess. The dialogue with Harry's ex-girlfriend was memorable. Same for the Insulindian phasmid, who turned out to be a total bro.

If this is not a 10/10 for me, there are a few reasons. First, it is difficult to move around the map. It's just not enjoyable. Second, the Switch version was released poorly, I think it was fixed later but it used to take me like upwards of a minute to load new areas. That kind of sucked.

The audio began tearing every time the frames started to, making it a frustrating experience. Despite absolutely being swept away for hours by the attention to detail in the story & mechanics, I cannot in good conscience recommend a game with such a poor performance. ATTENTION ALL VIDEO GAME DEVELOPERS/PORTERS: MAKE YOUR GAME PLAYABLE ON CONSOLE OR DON'T DO IT AT ALL.
**Edit** Game is much more playable now. Still has audio tearing but it crashes much less than it used to. Thanks for trying at least, clearly this game wasn't optimized to be anything other than a pc game.

Disco Elysium is not a game for the masses, it is an old-school PC niche experience that is now available on Nintendo. Unlike other similar ports, this one is very playable and it is perhaps the second-best way to experience this strange RPG game outside of the PC environment.

Disco Elysium is wonderfully strange and absurd, but uses this weirdness to discuss very real topics. The new voice acting from the Final Cut is a great addition that really fills the world with character and gives you an idea of the multicultural space. Apart from a bug here and there and slightly wonky controls, there is very little wrong with the game.
