There is no denying that Dark Souls on Switch is not the absolute best way to play the game. That honor belongs to your PS4, Xbox One, or PC, but the Switch version of the game is perfectly fine. You sacrifice a higher frame-rate for the opportunity to play the game handheld (and have the option to pause!), and in my experience the trade-off has been worth it.

Dark Souls Remastered finally came out for Nintendo Switch, and it’s… okay. I’m not insulted by the graphics or audio because I expected worse, but they’re definitely a step back compared to other versions. Still, I got my handheld Dark Souls, even if I don’t see quite so many players to enjoy it with.

The Switch version of Dark Souls simply lacks the polish that the remaster brought with it, and even added in a few issues that aren’t present anywhere else. The ability to play the game on the go isn’t something that you can get anywhere else, and it is hard to quantify just how much that makes up for the issues. Souls Remastered is still a very worthwhile game, but it is hard to justify this version over any other given the weaknesses that are unique to it.

The frame rate is consistent and the graphical downgrade is perfectly acceptable (especially after the flack the remaster got on other consoles). There are a few nitpicks though, there is a noticeable compression in the audio and the button mapping in the menus is weird and can't be changed for some reason, but I got used to the compression very quickly and the the B and A buttons don't ruin the experience. Also, fantastic game. Full Review »

Especially whilst playing handheld, the game performs well and I found myself only becoming frustrated due to my own lack of patience. I never feel like I am battling poor controls, hitboxes, or poor game design. Easily a quality title for the Nintendo Switch. Full Review »
