Dark Burial's clever use of its multi-purpose crossbow will have you carefully traversing its grueling world which is quite a fun thing to do.

However, that quickly turned to frustration at the buggy controls. Half the time I would take a run up, press jump, only to have my character not jump at all and plunge to his death. I wanted to give the game a chance, but this constant issue ultimately made me give up...

1 star for the interesting bow and arrow platform concept.

Unfortunately, this is marred by the fact that the jump animation is too fast and makes aiming the arrow into surfaces unreasonably difficult. Adding to this is the fact that your jump animation doesn't take you high enough to land on an arrow shot from your jump's apex.

What's not so satisfying is the combat. Aiming for static platforms is a pain, but aiming aerial attacks is nigh impossible. Even more frustrating is the way the enemies target and kill you. Skeleton archers will wait to shoot you as soon as they see a single pixel of your sprite and bats can take you out without ever getting in your arrow's path. You don't have to engage the enemies all the time, but when you do there's very little recourse. They're faster than you, they can attack from outside of your range, and they don't face the same restriction you have of only being able to shoot straight ahead.

The game is cheap and on sale, so if you're a masochist with nothing better to do, go ahead and buy it. But if you like fun, give this one a skip.
