The three-man band is on a secret mission, the only thorn in their side being the constant stream of audience. Keep an eye on the mood of your band members and gain control of the situation by adjusting their on-stage positions and using their abilities.

    As you progress, you must choose which abilities to upgrade, or when to sneak into a secret room for a nap or two. But your final goal remains the same, to explore an increasingly dangerous world.

    Several Selectable Characters: Each musician has their own unique abilities which can be used to deal with the detestable audience or the huge bosses.

    Performance Spectators: You unlock friends during your journey, and these friends play their part as they twist and turn in ways which they believe to be dance moves.

    Highlights

    Observe how the audience act and move, and devise strategies for how to best handle the blighters.

    If you’re not shy about a tough challenge, Cruel Bands Career is a creative and interesting little game worth picking up. I can’t say I’ve ever played a puzzle game like it; its unique art style alone is a pleasure to look at. With plenty of levels and content to enjoy, it’s a bargain considering its sub-£4 asking price – even if you have to give up because it gets too overwhelming.

    It’s hard to review Cruel Bands Career without conflating the design’s very intentional dreadfulness with judgements of the game’s quality. It’s clear from just a few moments of play that this game wants to make the player feel bad. That’s the whole schtick. And it is wholly successful in doing so – it’s a fascinating case study for emotionally resonant mechanics and non-traditional game design. And while it’s interesting, it doesn’t have a whole lot to say beyond its cruel exterior. It’s not particularly insightful or rewarding. It’s just a mean-spirited joke at the expense of the player. And even if the joke is well crafted, you’ve got to ask yourself if you really want to be on the receiving end of it.
