This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The atmospheres are excellent, especially the setting of the abandoned subways, well detailed and absolutely functional for their scope: to scare the player. Too bad that the game maps to be explored are quite limited for any level. Even the plot of the abandoned and cursed 90s server, although not entirely original, is very apt. Everything else is debateable though. There are several possible endings, but they all end cynically and rather confusingly with the death of your avatar or with a sudden disconnection. Sometimes you are disconnected from the server without a real obvious reason, you can imagine that a spectre surprised you from behind but it's just your best guess. The gameplay is good until you realise that the best tactic is always to run and run to escape the monsters especially after you delivered a couple of flags. Overall an enjoyable game that succeeds well in its main intent: to immerse the player in a gloomy and horror atmosphere. Excellent sound and horror special effects too. Too bad for the chaotic and inconclusive endings and for some lack of gameplay, at times it seems like a demo. Expand

Even at its relatively cheap $5 price tag, it is difficult to recommend Connection Haunted. The premise could be interesting, but its vague nature means that there's no impetus to pursue the game's endings even though they're short enough to conquer in an afternoon. It is supposed to mimic first-person shooters from the early days of online play, but it looks decidedly worse than most of them, and the performance is passable at best. Worst of all, with no scares of any sort or action or intrigue, the game is utterly boring. Unless you're a collector and absolutely need every single Switch game, it's a hard pass on Connection Haunted.

If you really need a new retro-inspired FPS that’ll get your blood pumping, I’d recommend picking up Post Void instead. While it might not offer the same kind of horror that Connection Haunted tries to capture, at least it scratches that classic PC shooter itch while giving you a reason to keeping coming back for more.

A game that has the potential to be really cool, but a lack of direction and incredibly short game really make this a frustrating play.
