Nov 10, 2020Having written visual novels myself I know just how difficult it is to turn decisions and branching narratives into something cohesive and interesting, regardless of the direction that the player takes through the narrative. I shudder to think what a wall of sticky notes would look like to map out a game with 600,000 words and nearly 2,500 decisions. Choices That Matters is a game of breathtaking scope that takes place in the most modest kind of game possible; the humble text adventure. That it tells such an excellent page-turner of a story with all those words and branching paths is the icing on the top.

Nov 11, 2020This Switch version carries things over nicely. You can use buttons or touch controls, and while the original version was built for screens of a different aspect ratio, you can barely tell. A special tip of the hat to the writing. There are some very talented authors working at Tin Man Games, and they went all-out here. It shows.

Nov 12, 2020The fact that Choices That Matter is a text-based adventure game will put off many people. After all, it lacks even the illustrations or basic animations that are available in visual novels, which remains popular today. But that shouldn’t stop players from giving it a go. The simple gameplay means that practically anyone can play it, while the story is compelling enough to keep users engaged. Anyone who starts the adventure will want to carry on to the end, seeing exactly how their decisions play out in every chapter, and that makes Choices That Matter: And The Sun Went Out well worth a try, even if it's not ground-breaking in its execution or presentation.
