And yeah, the main character is revealed to be transgender at the end. Which actually explains a lot throughout the story. It's not "forced diversity", it's the story the developers wanted to TELL. The games composer is a trans woman, and the primary developer Matt is non-binary, so I think it's quite nice that they were able to speak truth about their lives and also make such an incredible game!

This is probably the best 2D game ever. A great complex story as a background, and levels that are challenging to complete, and thus very satisfied when accomplished.
It is surprising and Madelaine takes us through a compelling and unexpected deep story for this genre of games, setting a new standard. You just cant stop, one level after another

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A large part of me wants to consider this a perfect game. Gameplay felt very smooth and fun to control. Music was stellar. Art was very pleasing, and the story was told in an amazing way.

It's incredible difficulty was not an issue, as it (a) restarts almost instantly without interrupting the music and the feel of the level, and (b) is very relevant to the message the story is giving.

Several moments of the story stuck out to me. The two feather sequences were the best of the whole story. The first time Badeline chases you was the most terrified I've felt out of any game. And the mental health topic was the cherry on the top.

Overall a very powerful game that may very well be one of the best platformers we've seen in a long time

The controls are exceptional and just plain fun to use, the progression in this game is natural and engaging, and the story is... decent, I guess. It's easily forgettable but didn't hinder my experience with the game. Even when I thought something was too hard, Celeste just pulled me back in, enticing me to attempt it. The only disappointing thing about this game is it's lack of combat, which I felt would have been an addition that would have improved the experience even more. Still, that doesn't overshadow my 10/10 review, which I feel it easily deserves.

NOTE: This game is not for everyone. I've seen two big complaints about this game: the first being that people don't like the graphics, and the second being that it feels like everything boils down to repeating a screen over and over again until you get lucky. If neither of those sound appealing, don't buy this.

Celeste also has a great soundtrack. it depicts the tone and mood of the situation, without getting repetitive, eg chapter 5's anxiety inducing score. overall, it is a must play, and for the price, you couldn't go wrong

The controls are simple, precise, but not really simple because you have to understand advanced movement if you want 100% completion, especially in chapter 9.

Level design was very good, and it introduces new mechanics in new chapter so it doesn’t feel boring. The combination of control, mechanics and level design makes the game hard, you will die thousand times. Some people tend to say the game was bad because it’s hard, we call these people a **** NOOB. Some people the story was good. It’s not. It’s unique, but the presentation and progression of the story wasn’t. But it still better than a guy need to saved a kidnapped princess. Point plus for uniqueness, point minus for people don’t know anxiety is a thing.

Music was good but not memorable. Recommended for people who likes 2d platformer, otherwise you will feel stuck replaying that one part over and over again with no way to progress otherwise. Pro tips : you **** NOOB can use assist mode

The best platformer out there and one of the best games ever. The fact that it was nominated for GotY Award @ The Game Awards 2018, competing with the likes of God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn, Assassin's Creed Odyssey and other amazing AAA games, says ti all... But let's break it down.

The controls feel accurate and when you die, you can easily tell why and you'll hardly blame the controls - unless you don't play with the D-Pad, which I highly recommend for this. With each death, comes the understanding of why and an automatic improvement of your skill and little by little, you'll pass amazingly difficult levels without even realizing it.

The music is one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard. Despite being sort of a "pixelated" soundtrack, it's more than enough to a) make you dive deep into the story and b) make you feel a specific emotion the story is trying to pass you. Easily the best surprise in the game. I'd go to work listening to this amazing soundtrack.

The story isn't incredible - but the way it's told, makes it absolutely incredible. The way you slowly realize why the story is happening, who really are those characters and why you're doing what you're doing, is something I'll cherish forever.

Lastly, the level design. Although there are only 3 core mechanics - jump, dash and climb - the way you have to use them and the way you can combine them to clear the levels, is genius. The level design is 100% brilliant and it's the real reason why the game is an actual challenge and why the game doesn't get repetitive. The game can be hard, yes, especially if you're a completionist; but you'll never say "this is impossible". And this is because of the perfect gradual increase of difficulty, aligned with the gradual introduction of different combinations plus the way the game simply tells you to be proud of your death counter, calm down and rise up to the next challenge - try and fail, until you succeed.

Want a casual challenge? Play the normal levels. Want to add an extra something? Catch all the strawberries. Not satisfied? Play the B-Sides too!. Still not enough? Play the C-Sides then! What's that? Still not much of a challenge or still want even more? Have fun trying to get the golden strawberry out of every level! There is SO MUCH to play!

A perfect story, music and challenge. A must play! 10/10

This is honestly one of the best 2D platformers I've ever played, and it only costed me €10 (on sale).
Great value for it's price and with tight controls and an amazing soundtrack it really disserves all the praise that it gets. Whenever I died (witch I did ALOT) it always felt like my fault and there is also no punishment for dying, you simply restart that small section of the level.

Whenever I died (witch I did ALOT) it always felt like my fault and there is also no punishment for dying, you simply restart that small section of the level. Difficulty can be extremely hard if you go for every collectable and 100% the game or can be easier if you just try to beat the story.
I personally tried to gather as much collectables as I could but it's ok if you don't because you can easily go back into any section of a level after you beat it, making it extremely easy to try to gather them later if you like.
Also don't worry the story is great but like all stories it's better not spoiled.
My only real complaints about the game are that in one section to progress to the post game it can be quite confusing and I needed to look up a guide (I won't say what it is for spoiler reasons). This is an extremely minor complaint.
I think if you want a good 2d Indie platformer and have about $15 you can't go wrong with Celeste.

Celeste is the best 2D platformer ever created when you judge it by the game alone. There's a reason this is becoming one of the most speedran games ever. Its movement has an immensely high skill cap. While technically your movement options are limited to climbing, dashing, and jumping, they aren't really. Because using these movement options together leads to so much more. For example, ifCeleste is the best 2D platformer ever created when you judge it by the game alone. There's a reason this is becoming one of the most speedran games ever. Its movement has an immensely high skill cap. While technically your movement options are limited to climbing, dashing, and jumping, they aren't really. Because using these movement options together leads to so much more. For example, if you jump, dash diagonally to the ground at the right time, and then jump again, you do a super jump where you have the speed of a dash but can dash again. And that's only scratching the surface of complex movement techniques.
There is also an amazing story in this game. If someone tells you that it wasn't subtle enough, that's because the subtle parts are so subtle that they couldn't notice them. There are some bits of the theme that are blasted in the player's face, but other bits require deep analysis. Almost every mechanic is symbolic of something.
Then there is the music. It's great. For me, the highlights are chapters 2 and 7, but every piece is amazing. The dynamic soundtrack fits the music to whats happening in the level very well, and it's more than just "when the game gets more fast-paced, speed up the music."
And then there is the pacing. Even the 4 screen long tutorial has thought put into it's pacing. Difficult sections were followed up by easier ones, etc.
But the thing that makes this game so great is how the game manages to put you in Madeline's shoes. You are determined when she's determined, you are worried when she's worried, and you are happy when she's happy. You experience Madeline's emotions in a way that only a video game could do.
While this game might look like some nostalgiac attention grabber with pixel-art graphics. Celeste uses more modern game design than most studios can claim they do. Celeste is without a doubt looking forward for its design.
Please do yourself a favor and play this game

The best game about climbing a mountain. It's difficult but the messages and gameplay are amazing. I would not recommend this for people who are bad at platformers or don't play them often though. It's awesome. Controls work better with a d-pad, but I beat it with thumbsticks. The movement is 8 directional, so a thumbstick with grooves would also work well.

I don't usually play platformers, but I do play some of them time to time, Celeste doesn't really impress me in any way, but I wouldn't say it's a bad game, far from it, it's not really memorable or something *really* special, but it has its qualities, in some way or the other

The controls feel really responsive, but sometimes it does its hiccups, it's extremely basic as well, all you can do is move left or right, jump, climb and dash (grounded or not), some levels take advantage of your movement options, it's simple, but if this game ever gets a sequel/spin-off I'd really want it expanded in some way.

The levels themselves tho... my god, they're too big, what the hell am I playing? A metroidvania or a platformer? It's so easy to get lost sometimes in most levels, some levels have linear sections but the spike in difficulty in these are ridiculous sometimes, and sometimes I got really focused in one part of the level that I completely forgot about the other parts of the map, basically just making the level worth revisiting for a good section of it and just that, the only real memorable levels I've found were the mirror temple (the 5th level), and The Summit (the 7th level) and just that, the other levels were chipped away as just "oh I remember this part" or stuff like that

most of my deaths (had 862 in total) were because of **** moments like those red orbs going the wrong way or hitting the wall with those stardust walls, but did it feel unfair in any way? Not really, there's a difference between fun challenging platforming and **** difficult levels, due to how quick you die and how close you respawn to where you messed up (sometimes), it felt like a fair trade-off for me, but the difficulty of the platforming just discourages me to go for the optional collectibles, because that's where the more difficult platforming is.

The characters aren't really something too memorable but I can see that they made them stand out in someway, one character is optimistic while the other is pessimistic, one is stubborn/confident while the other one is the opposite of that, some of the dialogue I found entertaining while others i found... "Why the **** did you even do that to begin with??"

I think the game started to feel a bit more interesting at the end of it, something that I don't really quite like in some games because it just feels like they put more attention to the end of the game but the rest was untouched/unpolished, and when the game was over, I was like: "That's it?"

I like the immersive music/sound effects, it makes the game a little bit more charming.

The amalgamation of these things make this game have some sort of charm to it, for me, it's nothing really that special, and I wouldn't see myself playing it again sometime soon, is it a bad game? far from it, is it an amazing game also? Also far from it, it's nothing that can't be replicated/rivaled anytime soon, overall, it's a fine game, but not something I would revisit, like some other games like Terraria or Sonic Mania.

It is, however, a very solid and difficult platformer with a great story. It takes about 8-10 hours to beat and a lot more to 100% by collecting all the strawberries. The story is touching and deep, with an expressive and engaging dive into the troubles of mental illness without dismissing or taking advantage of those who experience anxiety and depression themselves.

But I quickly realised it was a little outside my skill level at the time and it took me some time to get good and get into it. The steep learning curve made it a bit less enjoyable for me starting out, so unless you know you love fast-paced, challenging platformers you may want to reconsider buying the game.

There's a lot of content post game, b-sides, c-sides, and strawberries + the two bonus levels. The puzzles really had me perplexed at times and it was all the more satisfying to figure them out because of that. It took a while to sink in, but visually the game is just gorgeous. You can really tell this game was a labor of love to make. And the music, oh my god the music, Lena Raine really pulled out all the stops on this project. It perfectly fits and is a mirror image to the gameplay. Beautiful compositions. It feels like the music is almost encouraging you on with inspirational melodies and friendly vibes. In fact every aspect of this game seems to encourage you from the music to the story, to the visuals, to the mechanics, it all just feels encouraging no matter how many times you die. And that is brilliant game design. I would give it a 10 but I've been rating games on the Anthony Fantano scale where 10 is pure perfection and virtually nothing reaches that height. Sue me. The player controls a girl called Madeline. Madeline's moveset is very simple: She has a jump, a climb move to grab on and climb onto vertical surfaces, and a 8 way dash. The entire game is built around just those 3 mechanics. It's easy to learn, but mastering it is one of the most satisfying things I've ever done in a game. The game's difficulty curve is PERFECT.

The game's difficulty curve is PERFECT. After beating the main game, you unlock B-side levels of the main levels, and they are INCREDIBLY hard. I never thought I would be able to beat them, but I got better. And that's what makes Celeste such a fantastic game. It's genuinely great at getting you to overcome obstacles that seem impossible, which fits greatly with the game's themes.

Celeste is about the difficulty of The End is Nigh, but is far less frustrating than that game. I attribute this to the game's music, which is INCREDIBLE. It's funny how much of a difference such a small thing makes. When you keep hearing the same track over and over again, it had better be a good track.

I'd recommend playing with a D-Pad for an ideal experience. The sticks work, but they can be a bit annoying with the 8-way dashing.

Each person is unique and the way the animators use the portraits (next to text boxes) helps tell the story in a perfectly different way. However the pixel art style is cool but nothing too special (I don’t think I would recognize a screen shot from the game unless it is from a big set piece or has a strawberry in it). Celest has some of the nicest feeling platforming that I have experienced in a while. The use of the dash mechanic and the environment is both creative and frustrating (yet fair). Technically the game is great. It runs so smoothly and feels very responsive. No platforming and dash mechanics aren’t new, but they are shined to a mirror Polish here. Celest is a lot of fun and well worth the price. It isn’t a very long game, but it doesn’t need to be. There are several challenges and unlockables. However, after the initial intrigue had worn off I found the gameplay had become largely repetitive (jump, mid-air jump, climb, repeat) - the different worlds not offering enough variation to avoid the sensation of having done it all before. There were also some other admittedly small issues (minor narrative pacing issues and the fact that the controls would benefit from a D pad) meaning that I simply didn’t find the game as revolutionary or original the many suggested it might be (so many of which went so far as to mark Celeste as the best 2d platformer ever). In short, a solid game that perhaps just isn't for me.

For me, CELESTE is one of those games where is emotionally touching, insightful, and sincere when it tells its story of Madeline's journey of her mental health and her self-reflection; and with difficult but fair platforming, creative level design, and gameplay for players in speedrunners alike, it's one of the best 2D Platformers in years; here are some of my gripes about the game even if it's minor such as some inputs with the left analogue stick are off, some of the B-side Chapters are hard for me to beat, and most of all, some of the parts of the game is not cohesive at times leading to some parts of the game feeling like it's a bit off, and the phenomenon is called ludonarrative dissonance like in Chapter 3: Celestial Resort and the only stage does not have this problem is Chapter 9: Farewell (which I didn't reach, for now); It's still a great game in any platform you choose to play.

    Historia:

Gameplay and Visual Section: The gameplay of this game is beautiful, a rather but quite difficult game that will make you have at least more than 500 deaths in your game, but each death helps you learn from your mistakes and always motivates you to move on, Why does it motivate you? I will talk about that later, The technical section has an incredibly wonderful PixelArt that is very detailed for an indie game, The drawings that appear at the end of each stage are very well done, they can easily be used in the background screen, the gameplay is quite fluid and very well optimized it can easily run on any computer every time you die you reappear instantly I thought this point was very well achieved, the technical section is very well done. History: The story of this game is wonderful, The story is about a girl named Madeline, She decides to climb the celestial mountain which gives the game its title, She will find many challenges as she advances towards her goal as well as she will find many allies. I would like to comment more on this section, But I do not want to ruin the experience, I really tell you this story is wonderful I cannot describe it in any other way, As I said in the previous point, Why does it motivate you to keep moving forward in the game? This, Because of the story, In my case every time I lost in the game I wanted to keep moving forward and moving forward to know how this story ended I wanted to know what would happen to Madeline and her goal or the other secondary characters, The story is the reason why it is required to advance in the game being too difficult. Soundtrack: I never usually talk about this in my reviews, But when it comes to a game like celestial it has to be talked about, The soundtrack is one of the best soundtracks of all video games, A music so perfectly achieved with the game's scenarios, A very music relaxing, suspensive, challenging, motivational etc. Music is one of the best things about this game. Final conclusion: Celeste is a wonderful game with an excellent story as well as its soundtrack and playability, a game that because of its low price offers you more than what you paid for, It is an incredible game, nothing to say, highly recommended.

Fantastic platformer with a perfect difficulty curve. One of the best games of 2018.

Possibly the best 2d platformer out there? Loved how every level felt absolutely impossible to beat, only to die time and time again and ending up beating one level after another. Extremely challenging, and very rewarding

Damn, this game is hard but once and you will die a lot but when you get the motions needed its the closest experience to flying! One of the greatest platforming games every made. Celeste's ability to tell a difficult story has to be mentioned specially.

The best platformer of the last decade. A perfect level-design that offers a real sense of accomplishment after every obstacle you go through.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is one of the best platformers ever. It’s gameplay is simple and fun yet incredibly challenging at times. The way this game tackles mental health problems is great and the music in the game is fantastic. For someone casually playing through the game this isn’t the easiest but when you beat a hard part of a level you feel like a god. For those who want a challenge this game definitely delivers with alternate versions of each level that make the level significantly harder and the final chapter is one of the hardest levels in any game I have ever played Expand

Well I really love the game's story. But, the excess of levels and repetitive scenarios, kind of threw me off. I was already understanding the deep story, but I expected the game to end soon. I was so tired of repetitive jumps and nothing new added.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Celeste uses little bits of storytelling to tell a much bigger story. To understand the story, a player has to go out of there way to find it. For example, the story of chapter 3 can only be found if you look for it.
The game handles well, if a bit difficult to get use to. The game took me about 30 hours to beat chapters 1-8, and i have still not completed farewell or the b or c sides. The game looks amazing for what it needs. A more detailed game would just look ugly, and a less detailed game would look unfinished. In conclusion, my 17 pounds were well spent, as i got an amazing game with a good yet not distracting story, a massive amount of gameplay, and a soundtrack to kill for. 10 out of 10, amazing game, new personal favourite.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Celeste is a very hard game for the first few levels it wasn't that bad I mean they were challenging bows eventually able to overcome them however for the life of me I wanted to kill myself on chapter 6 core this shows your ability to put it to the ultimate test and good God it is harder than anything you've done before it's even worse in chapters 7 farewell we must follow a bird and good God the conveyor belt section I still haven't even got past that we have to grab on the walls the game is beautiful I will say but the difficulty is really hard I know game was going to be hard just for the life of it just like cuphead but unlike cuphead I was able to do it and the game so my suggestion for cuphead is be prepared for whatever comes your way so I recommend if you're playing so less go prepared also I really like the secret mini game which I think was a prototype version of Celeste that was a really nice detail I don't know why they called it Pico 8 but okay Expand

I beat the main story. There's still more levels to play. I doubt my opinions of this game will change. This game is great. Reminds me of my difficult Mario maker levels.

Incredible in all fronts: fantastic controls, fair difficulty, lovable characters, and an emotionally moving story that tackles mental health issues. It's perfect.

Even though I am late for this game, I understand that it is almost a masterpiece, the visuals are the best that ive ever seen for pixel, the story and characters are perfect and the movement/mechanics are incredible.

I loved playing chapter 1 - 8 and even doing some side Bs which were hard but very doable, because you would spawn very close. The chapter 9 though, I haven't finished it

I loved playing chapter 1 - 8 and even doing some side Bs which were hard but very doable, because you would spawn very close. The chapter 9 though, I haven't finished it but it is way too hard with very long levels that are annoying. To continue my journey in chapter 9, I had to put assist mode on which I feel guilty doing, but I wanna know the end of the story.

Wow, What a game. This has to have some of the best sprite work, and best platforming levels I’ve ever seen. Not to mention the story while simple is really good and touches on important themes. This is one of the best video games made

It tells a surprisingly deep and emotional story featuring a relatable main character and it all blends uniquely together to make one of the finest gaming experience of the year. Celeste might not look it but, just like the mountain Madeline is so determined to conquer, it towers above the rest quite easily.

As most indie-keen gamers already know, Celeste is a phenomenal 2D platformer. Almost everything about it comes together to make a satisfying and challenging game that'll thoroughly put your skills to the test.

My hands actually hurt from gripping the Switch but I couldn’t stop, and when I finally landed on the other side of one of the many gauntlets that Celeste wears like a medal, I felt both relief and curiosity as to what it would throw at me next. It’s a rewarding experience and a game that I’m honoured to issue a perfect score.
