The tight and precise controls allow players to execute complex maneuvers with ease, giving a sense of fluidity and control over the protagonist, Madeline. Whether it's climbing walls, dashing through obstacles, or performing precise jumps, the controls in Celeste feel incredibly satisfying. The game strikes a perfect balance between accessibility and depth, ensuring that players of all skill levels can enjoy the smooth and responsive gameplay.

The mechanics in Celeste are brilliantly crafted, offering a wide range of abilities and challenges that keep players engaged throughout their journey. The core mechanic of the game revolves around Madeline's ability to perform a mid-air dash, which adds an extra layer of complexity and creativity to the platforming sequences. The game introduces new mechanics gradually, allowing players to master each one before moving on to the next. The mechanics in Celeste are not just gimmicks; they are cleverly integrated into the level design, creating a cohesive and immersive gameplay experience.

One of Celeste's standout features is its challenging difficulty that manages to be both tough and rewarding. The game presents players with increasingly complex platforming sections that require precise timing and quick thinking. While the difficulty can be daunting, Celeste adopts a fair and forgiving approach. The game encourages experimentation and learning from mistakes, providing frequent checkpoints and quick respawns. Overcoming a particularly challenging section or collecting a particularly difficult strawberry feels incredibly rewarding, fueling a sense of accomplishment that drives players to keep pushing forward. Celeste's difficulty is finely tuned to strike the perfect balance between frustration and triumph, creating a deeply satisfying and gratifying gameplay experience.

I don't usually play platformers, but I do play some of them time to time, Celeste doesn't really impress me in any way, but I wouldn't say it's a bad game, far from it, it's not really memorable or something *really* special, but it has its qualities, in some way or the other

The controls feel really responsive, but sometimes it does its hiccups, it's extremely basic as well, all you can do is move left or right, jump, climb and dash (grounded or not), some levels take advantage of your movement options, it's simple, but if this game ever gets a sequel/spin-off I'd really want it expanded in some way.

The levels themselves tho... my god, they're too big, what the hell am I playing? A metroidvania or a platformer? It's so easy to get lost sometimes in most levels, some levels have linear sections but the spike in difficulty in these are ridiculous sometimes, and sometimes I got really focused in one part of the level that I completely forgot about the other parts of the map, basically just making the level worth revisiting for a good section of it and just that, the only real memorable levels I've found were the mirror temple (the 5th level), and The Summit (the 7th level) and just that, the other levels were chipped away as just "oh I remember this part" or stuff like that

most of my deaths (had 862 in total) were because of **** moments like those red orbs going the wrong way or hitting the wall with those stardust walls, but did it feel unfair in any way? Not really, there's a difference between fun challenging platforming and **** difficult levels, due to how quick you die and how close you respawn to where you messed up (sometimes), it felt like a fair trade-off for me, but the difficulty of the platforming just discourages me to go for the optional collectibles, because that's where the more difficult platforming is.

The characters aren't really something too memorable but I can see that they made them stand out in someway, one character is optimistic while the other is pessimistic, one is stubborn/confident while the other one is the opposite of that, some of the dialogue I found entertaining while others i found... "Why the **** did you even do that to begin with??"

I think the game started to feel a bit more interesting at the end of it, something that I don't really quite like in some games because it just feels like they put more attention to the end of the game but the rest was untouched/unpolished, and when the game was over, I was like: "That's it?"

I like the immersive music/sound effects, it makes the game a little bit more charming.

The amalgamation of these things make this game have some sort of charm to it, for me, it's nothing really that special, and I wouldn't see myself playing it again sometime soon, is it a bad game? far from it, is it an amazing game also? Also far from it, it's nothing that can't be replicated/rivaled anytime soon, overall, it's a fine game, but not something I would revisit, like some other games like Terraria or Sonic Mania.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Celeste uses little bits of storytelling to tell a much bigger story. To understand the story, a player has to go out of there way to find it. For example, the story of chapter 3 can only be found if you look for it.
The game handles well, if a bit difficult to get use to. The game took me about 30 hours to beat chapters 1-8, and i have still not completed farewell or the b or c sides. The game looks amazing for what it needs. A more detailed game would just look ugly, and a less detailed game would look unfinished. In conclusion, my 17 pounds were well spent, as i got an amazing game with a good yet not distracting story, a massive amount of gameplay, and a soundtrack to kill for. 10 out of 10, amazing game, new personal favourite.

It is a game I planned to beat over the course of a week but couldn't help but beat in one night. The game is full of charm that I hardly see anywhere else. The platforming is the best and most smooth I've played in any game ever. The main story is very heartwarming and made me cry by the ending credits. Each level is unique in every way from visuals, game play changes, narrative, and music. Speaking of music, nearly every song in Celeste is great to listen to. The only negative thing I can think about the game is that the grind to 100% the game is crushingly difficult and only meant for the best of the best, which heavily contradicts the story's message. I'd rate Celeste a 9.5 out of 10 if meta critic allowed me to but I'll put a 10 in its place due to this game being the first game of an indie studio. Expand

Possibly the best 2d platformer out there? Loved how every level felt absolutely impossible to beat, only to die time and time again and ending up beating one level after another. Extremely challenging, and very rewarding

Fantastic game and EXTREMELY challenging. Probably the most difficult game I have ever played. It tracks how many times you die and cumulatively I'm at 2000+ deaths now. For some people I think this extreme level of challenge is going to kill their joy of the game but for others it will light them up and be satisfying & rewarding.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. For me, CELESTE is one of those games where is emotionally touching, insightful, and sincere when it tells its story of Madeline's journey of her mental health and her self-reflection; and with difficult but fair platforming, creative level design, and gameplay for players in speedrunners alike, it's one of the best 2D Platformers in years; here are some of my gripes about the game even if it's minor such as some inputs with the left analogue stick are off, some of the B-side Chapters are hard for me to beat, and most of all, some of the parts of the game is not cohesive at times leading to some parts of the game feeling like it's a bit off, and the phenomenon is called ludonarrative dissonance like in Chapter 3: Celestial Resort and the only stage does not have this problem is Chapter 9: Farewell (which I didn't reach, for now); It's still a great game in any platform you choose to play.

I will make a finished review if I finish all of the content of the game.

Celeste is a wonderful game. Gameplay and Visual Section: The gameplay of this game is beautiful, a rather but quite difficult game that will make you have at least more than 500 deaths in your game, but each death helps you learn from your mistakes and always motivates you to move on, Why does it motivate you? I will talk about that later, The technical section has an incredibly wonderful PixelArt that is very detailed for an indie game, The drawings that appear at the end of each stage are very well done, they can easily be used in the background screen, the gameplay is quite fluid and very well optimized it can easily run on any computer every time you die you reappear instantly I thought this point was very well achieved, the technical section is very well done. History: The story of this game is wonderful, The story is about a girl named Madeline, She decides to climb the celestial mountain which gives the game its title, She will find many challenges as she advances towards her goal as well as she will find many allies. I would like to comment more on this section, But I do not want to ruin the experience, I really tell you this story is wonderful I cannot describe it in any other way, As I said in the previous point, Why does it motivate you to keep moving forward in the game? This, Because of the story, In my case every time I lost in the game I wanted to keep moving forward and moving forward to know how this story ended I wanted to know what would happen to Madeline and her goal or the other secondary characters, The story is the reason why it is required to advance in the game being too difficult. Soundtrack: I never usually talk about this in my reviews, But when it comes to a game like celestial it has to be talked about, The soundtrack is one of the best soundtracks of all video games, A music so perfectly achieved with the game's scenarios, A very music relaxing, suspensive, challenging, motivational etc. Music is one of the best things about this game. Final conclusion: Celeste is a wonderful game with an excellent story as well as its soundtrack and playability, a game that because of its low price offers you more than what you paid for, It is an incredible game, nothing to say, highly recommended.

Celeste also has a great soundtrack. it depicts the tone and mood of the situation, without getting repetitive, eg chapter 5's anxiety inducing score. overall, it is a must play, and for the price, you couldn't go wrong

However, after the initial intrigue had worn off I found the gameplay had become largely repetitive (jump, mid-air jump, climb, repeat) - the different worlds not offering enough variation to avoid the sensation of having done it all before. There were also some other admittedly small issues (minor narrative pacing issues and the fact that the controls would benefit from a D pad) meaning that I simply didn’t find the game as revolutionary or original the many suggested it might be (so many of which went so far as to mark Celeste as the best 2d platformer ever). In short, a solid game that perhaps just isn't for me.

There's a lot of content post game, b-sides, c-sides, and strawberries + the two bonus levels. The puzzles really had me perplexed at times and it was all the more satisfying to figure them out because of that. It took a while to sink in, but visually the game is just gorgeous. You can really tell this game was a labor of love to make. And the music, oh my god the music, Lena Raine really pulled out all the stops on this project. It perfectly fits and is a mirror image to the gameplay. Beautiful compositions. It feels like the music is almost encouraging you on with inspirational melodies and friendly vibes. In fact every aspect of this game seems to encourage you from the music to the story, to the visuals, to the mechanics, it all just feels encouraging no matter how many times you die. And that is brilliant game design. I would give it a 10 but I've been rating games on the Anthony Fantano scale where 10 is pure perfection and virtually nothing reaches that height. Sue me. Each person is unique and the way the animators use the portraits (next to text boxes) helps tell the story in a perfectly different way. However the pixel art style is cool but nothing too special (I don’t think I would recognize a screen shot from the game unless it is from a big set piece or has a strawberry in it). Celest has some of the nicest feeling platforming that I have experienced in a while. The use of the dash mechanic and the environment is both creative and frustrating (yet fair). Technically the game is great. It runs so smoothly and feels very responsive. No platforming and dash mechanics aren’t new, but they are shined to a mirror Polish here. Celest is a lot of fun and well worth the price. It isn’t a very long game, but it doesn’t need to be. There are several challenges and unlockables. What a great game.

The player controls a girl called Madeline. Madeline's moveset is very simple: She has a jump, a climb move to grab on and climb onto vertical surfaces, and a 8 way dash. The entire game is built around just those 3 mechanics. It's easy to learn, but mastering it is one of the most satisfying things I've ever done in a game. The game's difficulty curve is PERFECT.

The game's difficulty curve is PERFECT. After beating the main game, you unlock B-side levels of the main levels, and they are INCREDIBLY hard. I never thought I would be able to beat them, but I got better. And that's what makes Celeste such a fantastic game. It's genuinely great at getting you to overcome obstacles that seem impossible, which fits greatly with the game's themes.

Celeste is about the difficulty of The End is Nigh, but is far less frustrating than that game. I attribute this to the game's music, which is INCREDIBLE. It's funny how much of a difference such a small thing makes. When you keep hearing the same track over and over again, it had better be a good track.

I'd recommend playing with a D-Pad for an ideal experience. The sticks work, but they can be a bit annoying with the 8-way dashing.

    Gameplay: 10/10
While the controls are deceptively simple, every single chapter introduces a few new mechanics that you will have to master in order to progress. Whether they be platforms that disintegrate underneath you, platforms that move in sync with your dashing, walls you can dash through that have a unique effect. gemstones that replenish your dash midair, bubbles that shoot you far off into certain directions, and the list goes on and on, each new mechanic requires you to use them with near perfect precision and timing. The challenge can be occasionally frustrating, and you may find yourself dying several hundred times in any given chapter (I'm not exaggerating, you will die a lot), but it's the good kind of frustration that invites you to persist, not the kind that will cause you to rage quit. And none of your deaths feel out of your control. It doesn't require you to memorize every obstacle coming next, because there's never anything popping up that you didn't expect. Every obstacle is laid out in front of you, clear for you to see, which makes the challenge more inviting than frustrating.
But I don't want to scare off potential players who are not so keen on the sound of timing and precision based gameplay, since that doesn't sound particularly fun by description alone, but this is a joy to play and an innumerable amount of sequences had me smiling and feeling accomplished by their end.

My hands actually hurt from gripping the Switch but I couldn’t stop, and when I finally landed on the other side of one of the many gauntlets that Celeste wears like a medal, I felt both relief and curiosity as to what it would throw at me next. It’s a rewarding experience and a game that I’m honoured to issue a perfect score.
