This game was an unexpected masterpiece!
The storyline hits home with its take on mental health an the main character is adorable.
The gameplay mechanics and level design make for outstanding gameplay that is both challenging and satisfying.
A must play for all gamers!

One of the few games to fully live up to the hype around it. I waited to play it because I felt like it was getting overpraised. This game is 100% worthy of that praise. It's a fantastic platformer with a unique story. Highly recommend.

Even if it's a lot of hard work, every platforming game should have controls that are as slick as Celeste. Period. This game is difficult but is totally doable if you keep practicing, and the controls are so smooth that it never really feels as a chore to beat a level (it is difficult because the game design is based to be challenging).

The music is good and also I really enjoyed the fact that the berries are optional. It really helps to know that they are there to impress your friends or if you wanna beat your own personnal high score.

For people who want a even more challenging game, they have the B-C sides and all the heart stuff to do (I didn't because I am not a masochist lol). It's too bad that those side quest are insanely hard because I would have love to be able to do some of them, but I am not fond of dying 1000 times just to understand how works some insanely precise mechanics, but that's really just me.

All in all, it's a great game that really deserves the praises. If you love fair platform challenges, it is here for you.

The seven main story chapters all feature challenging , but never unfair platforming, great retro visuals and a great soundtrack by lena raine. There are a ton of collectibles scattered around the levels like strawberries, Tapes that unlock the B-Sides of every level and a crystal heart that is needed to progress through Chapter 8. After beating Chapter 1 to 8 and their B-Sides, you unlock the C-Sides which were the most fun I ever had in a 2D-Platformer. The perfect game for people that like difficult 2D platformers. Expand

The best game about climbing a mountain. It's difficult but the messages and gameplay are amazing. I would not recommend this for people who are bad at platformers or don't play them often though. It's awesome. Controls work better with a d-pad, but I beat it with thumbsticks. The movement is 8 directional, so a thumbstick with grooves would also work well.

Celeste does so by using its challenging and intrinsically satisfying gameplay to tell a story of mental illness and personal resiliency. Yes, the game is difficult - and for a reason. The difficulty contributes to Celeste's themes of persevering through improvement. The music is a bop and tonally fits each level to help create a sense of atmosphere. Controls are tight and responsive, meaning that deaths are the player's fault, not the game's fault. Although death comes often, a quick reboot feature keeps the player engaged. Upon "finishing" the game, there are plenty of speed running, completionist, and difficulty challenges to keep dedicated players coming back.

Ultimately, some games like The Last of Us Part II try to tell a mature story at the cost of player fun. Despite being an indie title with no such production funds, Celeste manages to tell a mature story while continually being fun. Celeste is a masterpiece. This will be a game remembered for decades to come from its balance of fun and theme.

I bought the digital version of this game for $10. The critics have this ranked as a top 5 game. It’s not a top 5 game, and not even a steal at $10. It is, however, a very solid and difficult platformer with a great story. It takes about 8-10 hours to beat and a lot more to 100% by collecting all the strawberries. And now that it goes on sale for $5, it is a steal. Go out and get it.

The level design for everything is phenomenal. In each screen, a clear goal is set, and you are not punished for failing. Pretty much all of the gimmicks are interesting and engaging, and all combinations of these gimmicks are used to their utmost potential.

The story is touching and deep, with an expressive and engaging dive into the troubles of mental illness without dismissing or taking advantage of those who experience anxiety and depression themselves.

And the music...just listen on Spotify. I believe these are some of the greatest songs ever made.

It's challenging but fair, despite being awful at games I was able to make it to the end fine thanks to generous checkpoints and other details that make the game forgiving without taking out the difficulty. The game doesn't supplement difficulty with arbitrary challenge that's actually unfair, it never feels like the game made a mistake when you die, it's always your fault for messing up. It's rewarding and even though it's challenge is part of the experience and story, if it proves to be to intimidating for you, you can use the assist mode to tailor the difficulty to accommodate for your skill level. The level design is excellent. The visuals are stunning despite being somewhat simplistic compared to Triple A games like Red Dead Redemption or The Last of Us Part 2. The controls are tight and allow for the precise movement the game requires, everything feels great and fun to control. The game is short enough to not overstay it's welcome at all if you are just interested in getting to the end credits, but it is filled with plenty of optional content to keep dedicated fans playing long after if they so desire. This is the game I think of when I think of a masterpiece video game. I absolutely recommend it to anyone with remotely any interest in platformers. If the difficulty is the only thing holding you back from jumping into it then I strongly urge you to take the risk like I did. if platformers aren't your type of games though, I can't say with certainty that it will change your mind or that you will love it as much as me. The game is only $20 though so it might be worth the risk. Expand

As a platformer it's a fun game. The difficulty pretty fair, you die a bunch, but aside from a death count there isn't really any repercussions to dying other than having to try again from the beginning of that small area, so it's no big deal. Overall I was pleased with the difficulty level and had fun playing through this game, though it does get a bit boring at times.

However, one of my issues with the game and the main reason I couldn't bring myself to give it a higher score is that I was not too impressed with the controllers. The mechanic of having to hold a button to hold on to the walls and manually move up and down (different than most platformers where you hold on to walls upon contact and slowly slide down) combined to a dash ability that didn't feel very precise (I found that the game was a little too sensitive in detecting dashes as a diagonal movement when you're actually trying to go straight) made me not love the flow of the movements in this game, and as a platformer that's a big deal. The movement mechanics were obviously a design choice, and I suppose it's purely going to depend of the opinion of the player, but, personally, while I wouldn't call it bad and I did get used to it fairly quickly, I also I didn't love it. The flow of the movements just didn't feel great for me.

Another point that I didn't love was some of the visual design aspects of the levels. Sometimes things are not very visible or clear. For example, chapter 4 has some pink platforms in front of a pink background. I found myself more often than I would like to admit not noticing at first something that was right in front of my face and obviously made to be used (and I mean literally not seeing it at first). As this is not something I find myself experiencing on other games of the genre, I have to assume it's an issue I had with the design of this game in particular.

And finally: the story. Not going to lie, I didn't like it. The dialogs, especially the ones with your "evil" self, are pretty cringy and felt pretty shallow. I understand what they were aiming for with the theme of overcoming depression and anxiety, and I have played other games that did a phenomenal job with this theme, but Celeste just wasn't one of them. Perhaps it was the characters and the dialogs, or perhaps it was that story felt out of place with the gameplay (probably both), but the story didn't really work for me and felt mostly cringy and something I wanted to skip.

tl;dr: not one of my favorite platformers, and I probably won't be replaying it in the future, but I still had fun as a one time playthrough.

It took me over 20 hours until I gave up (I completed the main 7 chapters of the game but did not finish 8th and 9th). And the reason I gave up is why I'm giving this game "only" 8/10. Although the high difficulty is intended, it may be frustrating at some times (especially if you do want to collect all those strawberries). If you want to relax after a hard day of work and play just for a half of an hour while you commute, it may be not the best experience.

The controls are simple, precise, but not really simple because you have to understand advanced movement if you want 100% completion, especially in chapter 9.

Level design was very good, and it introduces new mechanics in new chapter so it doesn’t feel boring. The combination of control, mechanics and level design makes the game hard, you will die thousand times. Some people tend to say the game was bad because it’s hard, we call these people a **** NOOB. Some people the story was good. It’s not. It’s unique, but the presentation and progression of the story wasn’t. But it still better than a guy need to saved a kidnapped princess. Point plus for uniqueness, point minus for people don’t know anxiety is a thing.

Music was good but not memorable. Recommended for people who likes 2d platformer, otherwise you will feel stuck replaying that one part over and over again with no way to progress otherwise. Pro tips : you **** NOOB can use assist mode

Celeste is the best 2D platformer ever created when you judge it by the game alone. There's a reason this is becoming one of the most speedran games ever. Its movement has an immensely high skill cap. While technically your movement options are limited to climbing, dashing, and jumping, they aren't really. Because using these movement options together leads to so much more. For example, ifCeleste is the best 2D platformer ever created when you judge it by the game alone. While technically your movement options are limited to climbing, dashing, and jumping, they aren't really. Because using these movement options together leads to so much more. For example, if you jump, dash diagonally to the ground at the right time, and then jump again, you do a super jump where you have the speed of a dash but can dash again. And that's only scratching the surface of complex movement techniques.
There is also an amazing story in this game. If someone tells you that it wasn't subtle enough, that's because the subtle parts are so subtle that they couldn't notice them. There are some bits of the theme that are blasted in the player's face, but other bits require deep analysis. Almost every mechanic is symbolic of something.
Then there is the music. It's great. For me, the highlights are chapters 2 and 7, but every piece is amazing. The dynamic soundtrack fits the music to whats happening in the level very well, and it's more than just "when the game gets more fast-paced, speed up the music."
And then there is the pacing. Even the 4 screen long tutorial has thought put into it's pacing. Difficult sections were followed up by easier ones, etc.
But the thing that makes this game so great is how the game manages to put you in Madeline's shoes. You are determined when she's determined, you are worried when she's worried, and you are happy when she's happy. You experience Madeline's emotions in a way that only a video game could do.
While this game might look like some nostalgiac attention grabber with pixel-art graphics. Celeste uses more modern game design than most studios can claim they do. Celeste is without a doubt looking forward for its design.

Great value for it's price and with tight controls and an amazing soundtrack it really disserves all the praise that it gets. Whenever I died (witch I did ALOT) it always felt like my fault and there is also no punishment for dying, you simply restart that small section of the level.

Difficulty can be extremely hard if you go for every collectable and 100% the game or can be easier if you just try to beat the story.
I personally tried to gather as much collectables as I could but it's ok if you don't because you can easily go back into any section of a level after you beat it, making it extremely easy to try to gather them later if you like.
Also don't worry the story is great but like all stories it's better not spoiled.
My only real complaints about the game are that in one section to progress to the post game it can be quite confusing and I needed to look up a guide (I won't say what it is for spoiler reasons). This is an extremely minor complaint.
I think if you want a good 2d Indie platformer and have about $15 you can't go wrong with Celeste.

The best platformer out there and one of the best games ever. The fact that it was nominated for GotY Award @ The Game Awards 2018, competing with the likes of God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn, Assassin's Creed Odyssey and other amazing AAA games, says ti all... But let's break it down.

The controls feel accurate and when you die, you can easily tell why and you'll hardly blame the controls - unless you don't play with the D-Pad, which I highly recommend for this. With each death, comes the understanding of why and an automatic improvement of your skill and little by little, you'll pass amazingly difficult levels without even realizing it.

The music is one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard. Despite being sort of a "pixelated" soundtrack, it's more than enough to a) make you dive deep into the story and b) make you feel a specific emotion the story is trying to pass you. Easily the best surprise in the game. I'd go to work listening to this amazing soundtrack.

The story isn't incredible - but the way it's told, makes it absolutely incredible. The way you slowly realize why the story is happening, who really are those characters and why you're doing what you're doing, is something I'll cherish forever.

Lastly, the level design. Although there are only 3 core mechanics - jump, dash and climb - the way you have to use them and the way you can combine them to clear the levels, is genius. The level design is 100% brilliant and it's the real reason why the game is an actual challenge and why the game doesn't get repetitive. The game can be hard, yes, especially if you're a completionist; but you'll never say "this is impossible". And this is because of the perfect gradual increase of difficulty, aligned with the gradual introduction of different combinations plus the way the game simply tells you to be proud of your death counter, calm down and rise up to the next challenge - try and fail, until you succeed.

Want a casual challenge? Play the normal levels. Want to add an extra something? Catch all the strawberries. Not satisfied? Play the B-Sides too!. Still not enough? Play the C-Sides then! What's that? Still not much of a challenge or still want even more? Have fun trying to get the golden strawberry out of every level! There is SO MUCH to play!

A perfect story, music and challenge. A must play! 10/10

Celeste is such a good 2D platformer. The movement is precise. The controls are simple but have plenty of room for creativity within the games many mechanics. Just look at a speedrun to see what I mean.

This is a review I'm hesitant to write because while I managed to get to the end credits I propably have only seen 30% of what this game has to offer. But then again I think it can be valuable to present my opinion as a more casual player of this game.
What's really good about Celeste is how incredibly responsive and satisfying it is to play (which is absolutely crucial in plattformer).

What's really good about Celeste is how incredibly responsive and satisfying it is to play (which is absolutely crucial in plattformer). The game also does a great job of contextualising the levels with a neat story while also providing a clear goal of wanting to reach the top of a mountain.
The game is also very strong from an audio-visual standpoint. The music is nice and the visuals are simple but pretty while also being very functional in giving the player a good understanding of the level layout.
Celeste is a very difficult game and lots of level sections will propably require mulitple attempts to get through. Thankfully you will respawn quickly and usually only have to retry the current obstacle that you are struggling with. The only exception was the last big level before the credits roll which had brutal checkpoints in my opinion. I struggled a lot during that section.
But in the end I got to the credits with almost 3000 deaths on the counter. This shows how tough the game is but also how motivated I was to finish it. I don't think I would've put up with that in any other game.
However, this is pretty much how far I was willing to go. There are endgame levels, as well as remixes of earlier levels and additional challenges like collecting items. I tried to play further. However, I didn't meet the required criteria to access a lot of that content and trying to unlock it or finish the remixed levels proved very challenging and at that point I also wasn't as motivated anymore. In the end I'm still very happy with what I got out of this game and just playing the main story already was worth the money.
I'd like to add that thankfully the game offers assist modes which basically function like cheat codes to make the game easier. I find using them to be very unsatisfying. But if someone was seriously stuck I think these might provide a way to make levels more doable.

Overall I had a great experience even if the endgame content wasn't for me. The story alone is worth playing and I recommend it to anyone who has a decent skill level in plattformers.

B-sides are really difficult challenges that are found in each level. When you enter one, you're thrown into an insanely challenging course that'll take you quite a bit of time to complete. The music in these B-sides are amazing though. I can't get them out of my head whatsoever. In conclusion, this is an amazing retro-styled game that loads of casual gamers can enjoy alongside more experienced platformers. Have a great day/night folks! Expand

After a long dialogue section the difficulty and frustration spikes through the roof! It is a hard game filled with trial by death, but you respawn quickly on the same screen so it actually works. Honestly, I didn't mind the first 995 times i died (actual number- not an exaggeration). Then the climax begins and each screen has multiple sections that need to be done perfectly or you die and do them all again. It goes from a challenge to chore very quickly. I died an additional 1400+ times on the final 2 sections. It's a real shame because the story is strongest at that point. I get why they made it so hard, but it totally breaks the engagement and nearly spoiled the entire game.
I still recommend it to anyone who wants a challenging game. I'm sure all these perfect 10's were from players who died way less than i did. Just know what you're getting into.

The controls are exceptional and just plain fun to use, the progression in this game is natural and engaging, and the story is... decent, I guess. It's easily forgettable but didn't hinder my experience with the game. Even when I thought something was too hard, Celeste just pulled me back in, enticing me to attempt it. The only disappointing thing about this game is it's lack of combat, which I felt would have been an addition that would have improved the experience even more. Still, that doesn't overshadow my 10/10 review, which I feel it easily deserves.

NOTE: This game is not for everyone. I've seen two big complaints about this game: the first being that people don't like the graphics, and the second being that it feels like everything boils down to repeating a screen over and over again until you get lucky. If neither of those sound appealing, don't buy this.

I became really invested in the story of Madeline and the other characters in the game, especially since I relate so closely to the struggles of anxiety and depression that is one of the main themes of the game. That sense of anxiety is replicated in some of the tracks in the game, as is the feeling of overcoming that anxiety when Madeline reaches the top of the mountain.

The game is hard, but it feels like it wants you to complete it. Everything is do-able, and I say that with confidence, because I've done everything. There are optional collectables, however, that increase the difficulty exponentially, and in turn they unlock even harder 'B-sides' and then once you beat those you get 'C-sides' and DAMN these things are hard. Not to mention the golden strawberries.

Look, this game is great. Pick it up.

    CONS:
    - On Switch, the joy con analog is not precise enough. So I had to go back to the D-pad for precise movements and the 4 buttons on the joy con are so painful to use. My thumbs still hurt the day after I played. Besides the LZ button is too far for the D-pad, so my hand also hurts... I guess no problem with a Pro controller, but I don't have one...
    - It very linear. No way to go wrong in the story, but... maybe it's not a con...

    RELATED TO OTHER CRITICISM

I never felt that the game was about luck but precise control and rhythm. So, I respectfully disagree with those comments. You could get to where you need to go by luck sometimes, but by being precise and with LOTS of practice, there is no way to miss it. Same as in SMB actually, except that SMB is easier (I loved it too). So for people who did not enjoy it because of the difficulty, I totally get it. No worries. But I think that the difficulty can be overcome.

For people who actually finished SMB and Hollow Knight, this one is perfectly feasible. I think it's super fair and not as punishing as Hollow Knight. Hollow knight took me more than 70 hours to go go beyond 100% (with the DLC...). Hollow Knight is super fair, BUT PUNISHING. You make a mistake and it slaps you in the face, then kick you in the ass and is ready to punish you again for your next mistake. I cried when I finished it. in Celeste, you are "invited" to die and restart the exact challenge. The game does not punish you by forcing you to go back in the past. You almost restart where you missed. I wish life was like this !

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A large part of me wants to consider this a perfect game. Gameplay felt very smooth and fun to control. Music was stellar. Art was very pleasing, and the story was told in an amazing way.

It's incredible difficulty was not an issue, as it (a) restarts almost instantly without interrupting the music and the feel of the level, and (b) is very relevant to the message the story is giving.

Several moments of the story stuck out to me. The two feather sequences were the best of the whole story. The first time Badeline chases you was the most terrified I've felt out of any game. And the mental health topic was the cherry on the top.

    Really overrated...

I bought it on a 50% off sale because of the rating, but am disappointed! I mean, I get it, the music is really nice, the gameplay is okay, but there is no way this game is above 8... I got bored after a few hours, it's just a jumping simulator! I put +100 hours into Zelda BoTW and it has the same user rating as this game?! seriously guys? Honestly seems

Incredible platformer. Beautiful pixel-art graphics, an amazing soundtrack that goes along perfectly with the varied environments and a heart-warming story with likeable characters that is very relatable and inspiring for people suffering from depression and anxiety such as myself.

I hesitated for a long time before buying Celeste because most of what I read about the game had to do with its incredible difficulty. And it's true, it gets tough as nails, especially in the end/post-game. But the thing is: Celeste is the good kind of difficult. I very rarely felt frustrated or enraged, even though I died over and over and over again. What makes ALL the dfference in the world is: You may die a thousand deaths (I'm not exaggerating, my first playthrough through the A-sides produced about 1800 deaths), but

    a) death itself is not very punishing: It takes about one second until you're back in action at the beginning of the same room/screen. You can immediately try again and improve your approach. This is a far cry from the BS that old-school platformers like Super Mario World used to pull, where you can get set back several levels and then have to play 10 minutes over, just to arrive at the point where you died and get a second try.

and b) it's always FAIR. The controls are perfect and razor-tight, and the platforming challenge is clearly laid out in front of you. Referencing SMW again, there's no slipping over the edge of platforms or dying because a Kamek spawned right where you were going or any of that sort of thing. There's no randomness. If you die, it's because YOU did something wrong, which you get the chance to immeditaley improve upon. As such, I actually found the game very motivating. I've been known to violently bang my controller on the living room table or throw stuff across the room and rage-quit with other difficult games. Didn't happen once while playing Celeste.

Plus, the challenge of climbing the mountain is actually part of the story. So you feel like you (and Madeleine) really accomplished something when you reach the summit in the absolutely awesome 7th chapter. If you're really having trouble, you can always turn on Assist Mode (I haven't yet).

After the story ends, the real fun (and challenge) begins with the 8th chapter (and now the freshly released insane 9th chapter), hunting down the hearts and strawberries in the A-sides, and unlocking and playing the B-Sides (harder, remixed versions of each of the levels). Oh boy, if you thought the A-Sides were hard, wait till you see these levels ;) And there's even more to come after that.

You definitely need the patience and drive (or you need to develop these qualities while playing) to try again and again and again if you want to get through this game, but it's a very rewarding experience. With each death, you refine your approach to the problem in front of you just a tiny little bit, you get a liiiiittle better at the game. And when you go back to early levels after playing some of the hard stuff, you will notice how your mastery of the mechanics has improved. You'll feel like a total badass, just flying through sections that used to give you so much trouble.

    Conclusion:
I whole-heartedly recommend this game to anyone who has even the slightest interest in 2D platformers and doesn't immediately start crying when they don't instantly succeed. That's the message here: Just keep at it, and you will eventually get what you want.

P.S. Please don't get discouraged by some of the very negative reviews here without taking a look at these people's profiles. Their reviews oftentimes say more about them, than about the game ;)

And yeah, the main character is revealed to be transgender at the end. Which actually explains a lot throughout the story. It's not "forced diversity", it's the story the developers wanted to TELL. The games composer is a trans woman, and the primary developer Matt is non-binary, so I think it's quite nice that they were able to speak truth about their lives and also make such an incredible game!

Great storyline, great graphics. Beats any Mario game hands down. You die a lot but learn very quickly as well – more skill-based than luck. Few games impress me but this one sure did. Only con is some levels can be a little too challenging.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. One of the best games I've ever played. The movement is fluid. Jumps, dashes and climbs react the frame you press the input, going exactly where you want them to. Celeste doesn't suffer from the floatiness of other platformers, without sacrificing maneuverability. The moveset alone would make this game fun if it were placed in an empty box, but it's not.

The level design is brilliant as well, teaching the player without telling them what to do (there is a brief tutorial, but that's just to teach the player which buttons do what). Each room has a number of solutions, giving the player a sense of pride upon figuring each of them out.

None of the rooms feel unfair to the player - the game doesn't laugh at the player for each mistake, but explains that each death brings you closer to the solution. It's not an easy game, but the difficulty curve scales steadily with the player, through the optional collectibles, B sides, C sides, and core, , which are just as well designed as the required sections.

The visuals are fantastic, though some people show distaste for pixel art in general. The animations are fluid, and lively. Incredible attention is put into every little detail in the game, from a lamp that swings when you brush by it, to the small clouds of dust that appear when landing from a jump. It's the subtle things that make good visuals great.

The story and music are worth mentioning as well, but I tend to play my games on mute, and while Madeline's character arc is important to the game as a whole, I don't tend to care about story when it comes to platformers, so my opinion isn't really valid when it comes to those 2 things, as I didn't pay much attention to either in game. That said, if you do prefer to have sound on, you definitely should for this game, as the soundtrack is amazing, especially in the B sides and C sides , but I mostly only know this particular aspect from watching lets plays, not in my own experience with the game.

While I do personally love the game, I also know that it's not for everyone. A lot of the optional parts of the game can become insanely difficult towards the end, so don't expect to 100% it unless you're /really/ good at platformers, or willing to sink a lot of time into it. Some of this difficulty can be eased via the built in assist mode, but I would strongly advise attempting the game on normal before trying assist mode, as it does take just a bit of the sweetness away from each victory.

I´m not exactly the biggest fan of 2d platformers but CELESTE get, chalenge gameplay ( dont worry have a chet mode) chilling sundtrack and history emotional that discuss mental illness in a different way so everyone can get realeted.

I´m the middle of the game i saw my self in Madeline place, wanting to give up but continuos the climb of celeste and celebrating every steps conquered.

So I have what we most have, a life, work chores, duties, hobbies, etc. one of the hobbies are video games, so I carefully pick the games I think I will enjoy and love most for the scarce time I have for playing them. After all the hype around this game "great difficult platformer with a great story and music" and the great pixel art I thought: "hm, I loved SMB, this looks nice, and with a story!!"
To keep things short, it is utter **** mechanics and the controls are soooo bad you want to kill yourself midway through chapter 1....as some already have said here: in SMB it is about precision and fairnes, you know why you screwed up, you know how to do it, now make it! And when you get it right it is so satisfying! In Celeste most of the time you think you know what you need to do, but you try and try and try that, and it doesn't work at all...in the most simple levels. "Am I retarded? I have 3 options, jump, grab and dash...only a rock here...." and after the 1000 time you make it, doing the same you have done before. So you have to be on the exact pixel, at the exact time and release it at........just NO! That is annoying, not satisfying since there is more luck involved than skill...I will play it through in cheatmode to see all the pixel art and music, but this game is bad as it gets. Only once I felt equally screwed by all the hype: Undertale. But there I already expected troll hype by the look of the game...
Celeste looked very nice and the reviews credible but no, again, a **** game hyped to oblivion....

This is a game that really sucks you into the experience because all the production elements are working perfectly together. I often say that when a piece of art seems effortless and obvious, it's an illusion that the design process wasn't difficult and meticulous. This game shows brilliance in all aspects of its design. I was often in awe as I played at how smooth and wonderful the game was.

The controls are really good, which is necessary in a game like this. The music is really great and I like to listen to it outside the game. The art style is right up my alley with pixelly designs with a beautiful use of color. The story is quite a standout and is very interesting and engaging. The level design is skillfully crafted and fun. It is hard but I never felt like it was unfair, and since there is a checkpoint in each room it always felt like I was making progress even though it was sometimes slow.

There's not much else for me to say except that I give it my highest recommendation. It's rare that I can't find anything I'd improve about a game.

It tells a surprisingly deep and emotional story featuring a relatable main character and it all blends uniquely together to make one of the finest gaming experience of the year. Celeste might not look it but, just like the mountain Madeline is so determined to conquer, it towers above the rest quite easily.

My hands actually hurt from gripping the Switch but I couldn’t stop, and when I finally landed on the other side of one of the many gauntlets that Celeste wears like a medal, I felt both relief and curiosity as to what it would throw at me next. It’s a rewarding experience and a game that I’m honoured to issue a perfect score.
