If you want a solid but not spectacular Metroidvania-style game that won’t let you down or knock your socks off, Catmaze does the job. I don’t see myself returning to it all that often, but I don’t regret playing through it in the least. In a genre with so many different working parts, I suppose I have to give this one a little extra credit for not dropping the ball in any major way. It’s a completely competent Metroidvania-style game, even if it isn’t especially exciting.

Catmaze is a metroidvania with a deep fantasy story and a huge open world to explore. It has a few issues with collision detection, but it is still fun and worth checking out. Whatever you do, follow the cat.

Cat Maze is an entertaining romp into a magical world of potions and animals. Initial frustrations paved the way for an enjoyable adventure, with plenty to discover and a fulfilling story.

While not necessarily extraordinary in any particular way, there’s something satisfying about this budget Metroidvania that I like. Perhaps it’s the old-school feel of the enemies and general platforming you’ll do, the pretty laid back level of its challenge, the generally sensible map layout… but I’m thinking it’s a combination of all the above. That said, people looking for something more than a light challenge or something innovative will likely want to just keep on moving. This is a thoroughly average Metroidvania that doesn’t aspire to change the world, but if you’re working with limited means and want something to simply enjoy it’s not a bad match.
