It was a game designed to consume coins, not to give pleasure. Even for players of modern "masocore" gamers, the stiff controls and minimal space for mistakes might prove more frustrating than exciting.
On the other hand, Capcom Arcade Stadium gives you plenty of ways to cheat your way through the game, by rewinding mistakes and saving at arbitrary points–or even slowing down time. That's a great opportunity to brute-force your way to the levels that you couldn't experience back in the arcade.
