Are you ready to become a champion? Choose your hero and challenge other players in this family-friendly game with a lively cartoon style. Train your brain and bond with your loved ones at the same time.

In this fantasy world, one of the brave heroes leads your chess army to victory. Choose between a mysterious fairy, a dangerous dwarf, a clever elf, a brave prince, and many more. Thanks to them each round turns into an epic adventure.

The graphics for Brawl Chess were designed by Platige Image (Oscar-nominated The Cathedral, The Witcher Netflix series, cinematic trailers for League of Legends, Halo 5, and Cyberpunk 2077). They filled the chessboard with various heroes and a lot of humor.

Cartoon visuals make the game accessible to everyone. What’s going on there! Arrows flying above heads and swords breaking in the heat of battle. Or maybe you prefer classic chess? You can always switch to traditional pieces.

Brawl Chess connects generations in a multiplayer mode, but single player will also appeal to players of all ages. There are 5 levels of difficulty. The first is great for children to learn. The fifth is suited for chess veterans who are looking for a serious challenge.

The inclusion of microtransactions wouldn't be that big a deal if there was more content available in Brawl Chess, but there really isn't. With only the two modes to play in, things can get dull fast. While it certainly isn't expected for a game to completely reinvent the game of chess, there could have been different scenarios or challenge modes useful for players wanting to improve their skills. In its current state Brawl Chess is just chess. There is nothing wrong with simplicity, but without additional features or game modes on top of a standard game of chess, Brawl Chess does feel a little bland. Those who want a well-made chess game that they can take on the go with the Switch though could do a lot worse than Brawl Chess, so it's got a niche and it fills it well.

Brawl Chess is strictly adequate. It’s hard to screw up chess badly, but as a video game, the aspiration in this take (or lack thereof) is pretty average. While targeting kids with a cartoony, less violent take on the Battle Chess formula is noble, overlooking a tutorial is a head-scratcher, to put it mildly. DLC is also highly questionable at best. Think long and hard on this one if it isn’t on sale.

Despite being just a chess game, there are no real selling points to recommend this over any of the others out there. There’s no extra modes, no tutorial and the game is marketed as being something it’s not. This is a gambit you should not bother taking.
