While the central quest in Boot Hill Bounties may have been cliche and the gameplay slightly disappointing, the time spent with my crew made it worthwhile. This Western yarn might not be a consistently excellent experience, but it still reminded me of how much I love the Wild West.

Boot Hill Bounties would be considered a serviceable JRPG without the bugs. The visual glitches are just out-of-place, but the progress-ending bug in the opening tutorial had me worried every time I would open a menu or click through dialogue that my playthrough would be ended prematurely. Given that the story, systems, and mechanics are so familiar, it’s a shame Boot Hill Bounties does nothing to make its versions unique or exciting outside of the trope-filled, spaghetti-western theme.

Ultimately, Boot Hill Bounties just doesn't do much of anything. It does succeed in being a retro-themed JRPG set in the Wild West, but it's not a particularly interesting Wild West, the combat system is functional, rather than interesting, and it was really hard to maintain interest in anything that the game offers. Boot Hill Bounties doesn't do anything wrong... other than be so uninspired that it doesn't give anyone a reason to play it either.

This review contains spoilers, click full review link to view. The story opens with our heroes Kid, Doc, Moon and Rosy in hot pursuit of the remaining members of the notorious 'The Saints-Little Gang' all while a clandestine plot threatens to start a war between the western settlers and the Chepakwik Indians. Unlike most JRPG's of old, BHB's is fairly an open world experience and so you can choose which outlaw you bring to justice next. I really have to hand it to the folks over at Experimental Gamer Studios as they took everything that made the original game great and expanded on it ten fold. There are 3x the amount of sidequests, over 250 enemies to square off with and dozens of items to collect and things to do! Boot Hill Bounties took everything that was good about Boot Hill Heroes and improved on it ten fold making this one of the best sequels of all time. There's just soo much side content to sink your teeth into, Everything from buying your own farm and leveling up your farming skill to hunting down dangerous banditos in the Mexican desert will pull you deeper in and before you know it you will be fully immersed in a intelligent, well crafted story with relatable characters and lush rolling environments. Every great RPG needs an Incredible soundtrack and The Boot Hill series does not disappoint. The soundtrack was composed by Jake ‘virt’ Kaufman of Shovel Knight, Shantae & DuckTales Remastered fame. The score fully captures the mood and setting of the Old West. This is EASILY a MUST-PURCHASE title now that it has finally come to switch. Full Review »

I mean, I knew I would enjoy it based on the theme, but it was nothing like I expected. A couple of hours in will get you hooked and I had to see the end for myself (which reveals a huge twist that gives me hope for a third installment). The towns are filled to the brim with things to see and do, people to speak with, and sidequests galore. The characters, even the townspeople, are unique in design and in dialogue. If you enjoy a great western story with build-up, complex battling, and a bit of a challenge, I highly recommend trying this one out – it’s worth the time spent! Full Review »
