Blossom Tales is praised by many as a very good reimagining of Zelda 3. However, the game doesn't quite live up to that promise.

This is done with quite a but of humor, which saves the game from being another Zelda 3 clone. It may happen that grandpa is out of ideas for the story and the children help him out, leading to a possible choice in enemies. Visually and musically, the game reminds more of Minish Cap than of Zelda 3.
It's pros are the nice atmosphere, storytelling, good dungeon and overworld design and simple learning curve.
However, the game has some serious issues.
First of all, the controls feel imprecise, The way Lily keeps her momentum while changing directions makes for a really painful and weird feeling and is especially punishing during precision puzzles, which happen a lot in the dungeons.
Secondly, being unable to de-bind the sword from the A-Button is weird for someone who has played a ton of Zelda, which is even more weird due to the A-Button being the interaction-button aswell. Instead, L or R could've been used for interaction (which are not binded at all).
Furthermore, the weapon system feels imbalanced - the boomerang is compensated for too heavily by low energy costs while being unintuitive to use, using the bow is punished by high energy costs, so the boomerang has a sense at all, and the bombs' throw range is just too short, while the time they take to explode when not hitting an enemy is atrocious. - throwing them almost always results in you taking damage from the blast due to you having to throw them at enemies, or in having to wait forever for them to explode by itself.
It's a fun, short game, but it doesn't really warrant the 15$ price tag - 10$ feel like they might've done enough for 10hours playtime.

The big difference between Zelda and Blossom Tales is that you will not forget Zelda the moment you are done with it.

Considering Zelda is the catalyst that made a lot of people even buy a switch, there is little reason not to purchase this game. A Zelda clone, and they have no shame in admitting it before you even take control of the character.

Cons: The overworld map is a bit lack-luster, and the game heavily borrows from previous Zelda games.

There's nothing bad I could say about this game :). It's a wonderful throwback to the days of 2d Zelda. It's not challenging though as it's quite generous with healing items. Personally I wasn't looking for a challenging game but others may be disappointed in that regard.
It also has a lovely bedtime story vibe reminiscent of the princess bride. It's one of my favorite indies :).

The only negative here is that there is no physical release.

It took me about 11 hours to finish the game with all the items except for 1 scroll, 2 energy pieces and 4 small pieces of heart.

I tried Oceanhorn on the Switch and I hated it. I tried Kamiko on the switch and I liked it, but it was not a full game (very short/1 hour). This is the game you want if you are missing games like ALTTP.

This game deserves an 8 out of 10 in my book as it is not very long, it is easy in general and it is not necessarily innovative.

There have been an assortment of games (we’ve even covered a few) that take heavy inspiration from Nintendo’s huge IP Zelda. The series has seen many different approaches, although many would argue that A Link to the Past is one of, if not THE best. And it’s in this iteration that we see Blossom Tales: The Sleeping King takes most of its inspiration.

The game puts a fun twist on the way that it’s told, as two children wake up their grandfather and demand he tells them a story. When asking if they heard of the elf that saves Hyrule, they say he’s told it a thousand times and that they want to hear something new. And so begins the story of Lily, a newly knighted girl that must save the king from his evil brother that casts a spell on him to rule the kingdom. While the grandfather serving as a narrator means he can give directions to the player, there are also interjections from the children that change the way the story is told, and while there isn’t any voice acting, the writing made me chuckle much more than I anticipated. Both the characters in the story as well as the grandfather with the children are well written and worth the time to read.

While the game starts off simple enough for you to get your bearings, the game doesn’t waste any time in providing your new tools for exploration and daring. Soon after you complete the first dungeon (which will no doubt seem familiar to many), you head to the first actual dungeon to collect one of three ingredients you’ll need to save the king. Yes, you’ve probably done this before, and if you didn’t like it then, you likely won’t enjoy it now. But for those that did, you are in for a treat. Only an hour into the game and you’ll have your sword, shield, bomb, as well as a bow & arrow. Depending on how much you explore, you may have more than that at an hour deep.

The game is generous in allowing you to learn the abilities you’re given, and fairly lenient with life that you’ll lose often. There’s a certain unhinged feeling that surrounds this game, as the controls don’t feel as pristine as you may remember. Sooner rather than later you’re asked to pull off some quickly timed tasks that you’ll no doubt be attempting again and again. The game holds your hand to begin with, but does decide to toughen things up a bit as you progress. Certainly, this isn’t the hardest game you’ll ever play, but when compared to what inspired it, and with how it starts off, it has the potential to end in manner much more difficult. And this is a good thing.

One of the nicest things I found while playing this was the lack of inventory for your abilities. By that I mean you don’t need to worry about finding or purchasing bombs and arrows – they all come from your energy bar that refills over time. And it’s pretty quick about it too – I found myself throwing bombs and shooting arrows almost exclusively in the first real dungeon, as it allowed me to take out multiple enemies at once while not having to be up close and personal with the sword. Sure, the sword has the classic spin move and even a jump attack, but as I mentioned before, this is where things feel a bit less polished. I found myself taking damage when I shouldn’t have been – attacks being interrupted at times when they weren’t at others. I still enjoy the occasional sword fight, but the energy system allows for a lot more experimentation without the frustration of wasting your items.

There are a lot of secrets to find in the world, and extra life and energy if you find the game becoming too difficult. This is more or less a way of choosing the game’s difficulty, as the game likes to throw huge mobs of enemies at you – quantity over quality in some instances – and more life will let you simply walk through without a care in the world. Perhaps its greatest strength is also its greatest weakness – while it makes some minor changes to the source material, it’ll at times feel like another country’s version of the same game. Chances are you’ll enjoy the remake, but prefer the original.

It’s always strange reviewing a game that so desperately wants to recreate something the developers loved growing up. Fans of the original will no doubt find kinship, and people that never played it may find this to be their original love for the style of game. But it won’t change the minds of anyone that didn’t like the genre before. What the game does, it does well – in particular the writing. Perhaps the best part of the game is the grandfather and his grandchildren – without that, the game would lose a lot of its heart and be nothing more than a clone. Suffice to say, his storytelling won me over.

At first I wasn't sure about this game. The controls feel a little off for a Zelda game. Once you get used to the combat, it's one of the best Zelda likes I have played. Good bosses and fun levels/puzzles. If you are looking for a Link to the Past style game, then I would say this might scratch that itch. The main difference is that it is very linear but the gameplay is great.

Upon entering the second dungeon, the very first room is filled to the brim with enemies, granted you can one hit them, but you cannot move through the room without spamming A about a hundred times. I would try to recount the first dungeon, but all I can remember is a few rooms filled with about a dozen enemies, and a couple dull basic puzzles. The most fun I had in this game was getting the tri-bow upgrade, and only because I was excited to see what kind of upgrade I could get, but the process of getting that upgrade was about an hour of grinding for rupees, er, gold coins, to buy two components needed for the upgrade. I was promised a game similar to A Link to the Past, and was given a boring, overrated, frustrating mess of simple puzzles and annoying enemy spam. Saying this game is similar to A Link to the Past is such an insult to that game, and I can't recommend spending your money on anything other than Blossom Tales enough. Expand

As far as Zelda imitation games go, this is one of the best, at least in terms of gameplay. The puzzles, too, while not difficult, are actually fun to solve (something that can't always be said for EVERY Zelda game). It's a solid length and it's certainly a game I would play again. My only real issues is that the overworld isn't incredibly interesting, nor is the story. The characters occasionally have some silly dialogue, but never feel fleshed out. Maybe that's the point, since it's a bedtime story, but the only real motive to continue is for the gameplay as opposed to any story investment. The game ends rather abruptly, too, leaving me wanting more. Naturally, I'm looking forward to a sequel, if only for new battles and puzzles. A more involving story would be nice, too.

There are some glitches that are irksome, not necessarily game breaking though. I would do what was necessary to solve a puzzle in some cases only to have the puzzle reset. I would then leave the room to see if I could find anything else to make the puzzle doable, but to no avail. But when I returned and retried to puzzle it would suddenly work. This only happened a few times, so it wasn't so bad, but it was still annoying when it did happen. Aside from occasional spammy enemy placement, this was my only gripe with the gameplay.

If you've got a Switch (or a PC) I recommend this game.

To say this is an homage to old school Zelda is an understatement. So much so that I had Zelda themes stuck in my head after every play session. It's not perfect and doesn't do much new, but it is well-designed and the story is charming.
If you expect it to be as good as Zelda, you'll be disappointed. If you want a casual Zelda-esque adventure, you'll get a lot of enjoyment from Blossom

A little bit overpriced, but it's an average Zelda tribute. It has fun enough to worth playing it if you want to buy.

Blossom Tales: The Sleeping King is an obvious homage to the Zelda series; more specifically, A Link to the Past. While it does embody those inspirations very closely, it does have it’s own charm and originality. If you’re looking for something to scratch that top down Zelda itch, then look no further than this title.

While it does embody those inspirations very closely, it does have it’s own charm and originality. If you’re looking for something to scratch that top down Zelda itch, then look no further than this title.

Let’s start with everything done right. Like I said, this game really captures that old school Zelda feel from the gameplay, exploration, puzzles, items, and dungeons. The story is simple yet made effective on how it’s told through a grandfather narrating his unfolding story to his two grandchildren as you progress and play, which I thought is a nice touch. Of course, the pixel art is minimalistic but very charming, and the music is catchy.

There are some aspects that needed improving, or I didn’t quite like. My biggest critique is that you will very often have to fight off a horde of enemies, which can make progressing through a dungeon feel slow and honestly not very fun. My second critique is that sometimes the game can feel tedious: you will solve the same puzzles over and over again, and discovering a secret chest typically doesn't yield anything particularly exciting.

Although there are a few flaws keeping this from being great, it's still a decent title and I still enjoyed my time with it. If you're a fan of Zelda like myself, I think you’ll like this one.

A good, simple, fun Zelda clone. It doesn’t do terribly much in comparison with other games, but what it does, it does well—and I liked the simplicity that it offered. It gave me a few happy evenings.

It gets a 9 instead of a 10 because it is really simple—even the map is pretty small. But, again, what it set out to do, it accomplished.

This is a really enjoyable playthrough. Blossom Tales is unashamedly a Zelda clone, but it does everything very well and in some ways it even improves on the Zelda formula. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Blossom Tales: The Sleeping King is a top-down dungeon crawler inspired by the classic Zelda game. The story begins with a bedtime story with a grandpa telling his grandchildren a tale about Lily, a young knight. Though being newly recruited, she has to find three ingredients to wake up the sleeping king cursed by his brother.

Exploration is very incentivised as you can find new upgrades or items. You can also collect things for the local villagers for items or weapon upgrade as well. There are secret areas and hidden gold that encourage you to explore more. And you will solve a lot of puzzles. But later in the game, it can be a bit challenging because it involves some platforming.

I played on Nintendo Switch Lite, and the control is tight. No complaints. The visuals are stunning. I was surprised by how pixel art in this game can be made to look this amazing. You have three slots to save your progress. And with auto-save will start as you enter or leave an area. You can be carefree and at ease.

Overall, I think the game defines the true meaning of a ‘little gem’. Without a doubt, I give it 9/10.

The enemies that come in swarms (bees, zombies, fireball things) can be killed with one use of the quake medallion also. My biggest gripe was how short the game was. I blew through it in one day (8hrs) and was left scratching my head wondering if there was more or if I really just beat it. I hope that if they make a sequel that they remove some of the insta-kill methods and make the enemies just a tad bit harder along with the bosses. Also a few more hours of game play would be nice. Either way it was worth playing and I did have fun with it. Expand

Solid, self-aware Zelda clone. I enjoyed a lot of the cleverness and tried-and-true classic gameplay. Took me about 15 hours to 100% it and I really enjoyed it all. Would recommend to anyone who wants a good Zelda-like game.

It is a nice homage to 2D (top-down pixel) Zelda games and has an interesting but slightly annoying stamina system to use items but you get used to it eventually.

Controls are nice for the most part but can get tedious in close-space areas for stick controls. Unfortunately though, you don't have a dedicated shield button and instead it goes for the item slot. You are also locked into the sword being on the A button (Switch) and while I don't mind that, I got used to it by playing the old Zelda games (and am very comfortable with it) other people might not like this.

Story is simple stuff and the "choose your path" aspect is very under-utilized to a point that it shouldn't have been implemented and just give a straight narrative.

The game has a very uneven difficulty. For most oft the time exploring, enemies don't pose too much of a threat and then you come to mid-bosses and bosses that have way too much HP and spam the screen with bullets you can hardly avoid with the finicky controls.
In some rooms there is also enemy spam with way to fast respawn ruining the fun.

Another terrible part of the game are the "Simon say's puzzles" that go on way too long and have random patterns all the time. It wouldn't have been that terrible (but still bad) if they wouldn't always reset to zero if you make a mistake and just have you try the current phase again until you either get an easy pattern or can remember it all. In some cases the triggers are too close together so you accidentally hit the right and the wrong one at the same time.

In other cases it simple was good puzzles but going on way too long and/or unneeded enemies to make it more tedious than it should be to get through.
Or you just had no hint what it wants, where it wants you to begin with or from which view angle or position the solution is supposed to be.

It's not a bad game by far but it has it's issues and the game being what it is, can't avoid being compared to old Zelda games that were just done much better in terms of gameplay and mechanics. It is a "first" development so it will have issues but air to improve so I won't be too harsh. It's definitively something I recommend for classic Zelda fans and a good entry for kids or younger generations who want to see where Zelda started without playing the old (overpriced) classic old school games.

Zelda-like with its own unique tone and style. The game is a delight. I only hope the devs let more of their own flair stand out above the exactness of the Zelda features for the sequel. They certainly seem capable!

I really enjoyed playing this game and if you are even contemplating getting it, just get it. I knew little about the story going into it but I'm a sucker for pixel games so I jumped right in.

Pros: The game looks beautiful, the music is good, the fact that the story is based on the grandpa telling it is so sweet, the puzzles. The play time is good too, I spent around 10 hours to finish

Pros: The game looks beautiful, the music is good, the fact that the story is based on the grandpa telling it is so sweet, the puzzles. The play time is good too, I spent around 10 hours to finish this game which includes time I spent on doing some side quests. There are some hidden areas in the map that give you rewards which are fun to look for.

Cons: The only thing I didn't really like in this game is that when using your bow and arrow if you activate facing one direction then you have to shoot it facing that direction which is sometimes a waste if your enemy moves suddenly. The reason I'm not giving this game a 10 is because sometimes the game is too forgiving and it kind of throws away your incentive to play well because you can find hearts so easily. Coins are also too easy to obtain.

A fine little game that can be completed in 10 hours, if you want to complete 100%. It is not a masterpeace but it's easy to figure out and control. The level of difficulty is very low, maybe too low, so everyone can join. It is very easy to see that they have imitated the Zelda-games, but it's not at the same level. But all in all a nice little game.

Blossom Tales stands as a good example at how a game with a rather simple origin can provide a surprising amount of content and a world to explore, even if it does not reach the monumental peaks it would like to. Thanks to its fine controls and gameplay and to the satisfaction of exploration, as well as to a visually charming outlook, Blossom Tales is a very welcome addition to the adventure and exploration games of the Nintendo Switch catalogue.

A carbon copy of classic Zelda games, but in my opinion the best part of this game is not how it looks, but its story design. A mixture of fairy tales.
