BlazBlue Entropy Effect X is a very innovative roguelike with its character moveset evolution mechanic. Besides being a treat for fans of the fighting game franchise, it's also very accessible to roguelike enthusiasts who aren't so familiar with combos, as well as more casual players. It's very addictive once you get the hang of it, and the variety of characters and styles helps a lot to avoid the simple repetition of the genre.

Blazblue Entropy Effect X's convolution will be a turn off for some, and for others a dream. There are some questionable design decisions in its lack of a visual combo counter, diminutive sprites, and stop-start upgrade screens, and the average action gamer will feel swamped by its narrative and overload of possible configurations. At the same time, it’s an undeniably impressive in scope: a mathematical formula of character building that's as flexible as it is complex. Boomers should probably step away, but for those who live to mine roguelikes to the nth degree, it’s something of a treat.

BlazBlue Entropy Effect X is a generally sound roguelike with lots of references to the fighting game series. The story could be better, but at least this time around it feels more directly tied to BlazBlue. I did encounter some issues on the Switch, but they also seemed like problems that could be patched out along the way. If you’re into games like Dead Cells and Astral Ascent, it’s certainly worth a look.
