    Faithful to its predecessor, Beyond a Steel Sky is a success on consoles. Taking advantage of the 4K resolution and fully dubbed dialogues, this version puts the player in an armchair. More stable and comfortable, the adventure turns out to be pleasant thanks to the impactful writing, colorful characters and a city more surprising than ever. The lack of life is however glaring and may hamper those looking for a spectacular setting.

    Nonetheless, Beyond a Steel Sky magically brings its 1994 ancestor back to life. The style, the humour, the chirpy dystopia are all revived. However, a lot has happened since that first golden age of adventures, and if you want a creative addition to the indie-fuelled inventiveness of the modern genre then you should look elsewhere. This is a game that remembers exactly how great things were in 1994, but isn’t much interested in how great they were last week.

    Those craving a slightly more mainstream take on the classic point-and-click adventure games of old will have a good time with Beyond a Steel Sky. It doesn’t outright amaze, but is no doubt a solid piece of sci-fi made playable.

    It is probably more often than not that long-time coming revivals don't stick the landing. Rather, they often feel cynical, desperate or misguided. Take Steps, for example. This absolutely is not the case with Beyond a Steel Sky. The writing and the way it weaves everything together honestly puts some of the biggest budget AAA movie titles to shame. Yes, there are some rough edges afforded by modern ascribe and default, but the fundamentals of a good story and adventure game are all present. More important is that it has a personality unique unto itself. It's clear why Revolution Software have such a loyal fanbase after all of these years.

    In the end, recommending Beyond a Steel Sky is a a sticky thing — if one is content with a strongly-written sci-fi adventure and doesn’t mind repetitive puzzles, there is good content to be found here. On the other hand, I suspect the huge gap between installments runs a very real risk of leaving both new and returning fans unsatisfied.

    Extraordinary game. An absolute blast. As a fan of the original this really hit the mark for a modern audience. Lovely stuff

    Having never played the original, but certainly having played my fair share of old-school adventure titles, Beyond a Steel Sky definitely hasHaving never played the original, but certainly having played my fair share of old-school adventure titles, Beyond a Steel Sky definitely has an authentic feel consistent with the classic era but with some more modern trappings. Depending on your tastes this is a double-edged sword. If you’re more into the modern flow of things I’d say the pacing here, in particular, feels a bit on the slow to develop side, with a bit more time being wasted on average meandering and trying to determine what you need to do than the average contemporary adventure. The sense of humor is also a bit more understated, reflecting the more traditional adventures that didn’t adhere to the LucasArts mode, and that’s fine if you’re looking for more of the sci-fi vibes but on the whole I think much of the dialogue and characters end up being on the bland side. For people who revere the classics this is an odd amalgam of old and new that may be a thrill, sort of giving you a taste of both worlds at once. If you’re more of a modern fan I’d say it’s more of a crapshoot, and honestly I’d be more inclined to simply go with one of those remastered but authentic originals rather than trying out a hybrid that’s an attempt to recapture that feel to some degree, but not a true old-school experience.
