I registered because I almost feel obligated.

I'm one of thousands of backers of the original Battle Princess Madelyn and when I heard that there would be a re-release, more akin to the developer's vision, I was quite excited. The original was a bit of a rough diamond, an easy 5-6/10 - so with a bit of a polish, it'd easily hit 7 or 8 / 10. But no, this is a total **** Improperly

But no, this is a total **** Improperly balanced, badly coded, poor layout of tilesets and it's actually more of the same BPM problems. The developer states it's "all new code" when it's clearly not and has been handled by someone with the coding skills of a leper with no hands.

No discount for existing owner -3 points
No ability to upgrade existing title -3 points
Bad coding, level layout and play -3 points

The game's only saving grace is its soudtrack. It's exceptional +1 point.

Even on this second go-around, Battle Princess Madelyn Royal Edition is not up to scratch. It's almost maddening because the stuff that works is very enjoyable. The core game is fun, with a pleasing set of influences coming together to make for a knockabout, challenging time. A host of major and minor flaws – and the notable removal of the non-linear Story mode from the original release, which could have offered more enjoyment if its issues had been fixed – make this a nostalgia trip we can't recommend. It's a genuinely disappointing example of a game that's so close to being a good time, but its problems completely spoil the fun. A little more tightening up and Battle Princess Madelyn would be a bit of a cracker, but we sadly suspect that after this Royal Edition there isn't going to be a third time around the block.
