  • Summary: A fast and frantic arcade extravaganza with tons of action and gallons of blood! It's up to Count Bloodvayne and his vampire powers to rescue his BATS teammates from Scorpion Supreme and STING's evil clutches.

BATS: Bloodsucker Anti-Terror Squad is fun. It has great humour, doesn’t take itself too seriously, and has some great homages to several franchises all whilst cracking a joke or two at their expense. Its gameplay is fine, and I think with a little bit of TLC to tighten the controls and fixing of the blood drops, it would turn BATS from a good game to a great one.

B.A.T.S. is a bit of a mixed bag. Its presentation is fantastic, with well-devised sprite work and a strong sense of humor throughout, and when the game does flow at the speed it needs it is an awful lot of fun for its short run time. However, those awkward design choices and more difficult technical issues do hold it back from reaching its full potential.

With a good but poorly executed premise, BATS: Bloodsucker Anti-Terror Squad tries to be frenetic and action-packed, but ends up being frustrating and monotonous. It served very well as a parody of the action squads, but as a game it is mediocre.

It makes for quite the elevator pitch. In execution though? Eh… it depends on your love for the theme overcoming the pronounced hump of stage designs far too often revolving around cheap deaths. I can respect games being challenging, but let that be about me mastering the mechanics and nuance of things, not remembering all of the purposely placed traps and enemies that will, far too easily, end your run. What somewhat doubles down on the dissatisfaction is how easily you’re generally able to kill your enemies when you do get to them, outside of the bosses which can require some endurance to knock out. Sure, unlocking new members of your crew, which generally changes the style of play a bit is a nice carrot to dangle, but in general the investment of effort to reward and satisfaction ratio here feels askew.
