Astral Ascent is a prime example of a game that amounts to more than the sum of its parts. Its strong character design, hi-bit visuals, tight combat, memorable bosses, and broad build variety have all featured in games you’ve probably played before—there’s nothing ‘new’ here. But to write it off as just 'another one of those' in a crowded genre would be to miss out on one of the most delightful and surprising releases of the year. Astral Ascent is comfortably one of the best roguelites available on the Switch today, and we can easily recommend it to anyone with a passing interest in the genre. Don't miss it.

The greatest compliment I can give a videogame is that it moved its genre forward. To me, Astral Ascent did just that. Where it lacked in storytelling, Astral Ascent’s robust combat system and uniquely deep character progression created an addicting gaming experience that can be played with endless enjoyment. While I fought so hard to eventually escape the Astral prison, I will gladly be back to do it all over again soon.

This roguelike gets so many things right, it doesn't have to open new paths. Its exploration and mobility are implemented in a fun and engaging way, as is the character development, while the combat is frantic and the level bosses are simply astonishing, not to mention ruthless. All this takes place amid a gorgeous visual background and fluid animations that perform without a glitch. So even if Astral Ascent is not the most innovative roguelike ever seen, it's still more than enough to deserve a good look.
