I really wanted this to do well but unfortunately another one bites the dust. With it mobile game like graphics and sound, this is definitely a bargain bin contender. The gameplay is monotonous and it doesn't feel like your choices have any lasting meaning or consequence. The writing is very poorly done and won't keep you interested for long. The game also focuses a lot on modern politics which is sad as it could have been a really good title if the devs just put core gameplay and story at the front instead of social politics. Hope they make a sequel and improve on this. Expand

Okay so I made a Metacritic account for this. I finished this little gem over the weekend and I’m so sad that it’s over! I took my time and completed it in just over 13 hours (I think the average is about 9 or 10 hours.) I wanted to experience everything.

So to start, the story is cool- not terribly unique but I do like the theme. The characters and their vastly different personalities

The characters and their vastly different personalities are what really grabbed my interest and I wanted to learn everything about them. The beginning is a little boring for the first couple of chapters, and I’ll have to admit I put the game down for a few days before starting back up, but things do start picking up once the crew starts facing more difficulties and especially when the dating sequence begins. You’ll want to make multiple saves and reload to experience all the different dating routes- they’re not very in-depth and honestly felt a bit too simple- they all eventually fall for you no matter what and feels kind of rushed- but there are very cute and rewarding moments with them nonetheless. When you win over the cold-hearted knight it’s the best feeling and it left me smiling for a long time.

The voice acting is really great in my opinion and I love the music even though there aren’t many tracks. The tunes are catchy and upbeat. The artwork is pretty and I love the character design. The puzzles are neat at first but not very exciting, and if you’re doing multiple play-throughs, they become a little annoying after awhile. But I didn’t really mind. Some of the scenes end a little awkwardly like there was meant to be more, but it’s not a big deal either.

Overall, the game is sweet and heartwarming. The ending is bittersweet and left me sad that it wasn’t longer! I haven’t stopped thinking about it since completing. Great little game and I am now on the hunt for something else like it! Get this if you like casual and lighthearted VNs with a twist.

I haven't played many games that gave me as much agency as Arcadia Fallen, and who doesn't want to be the hero (or anti-hero) of a fantasy story? Check this one out if you're looking for a game where you can really be yourself – or someone completely different! [Issue #58 – March/April 2022, p. 28]

Arcadia Fallen is a solid visual novel with branching baths based on character interactions, romance options and how you ultimately choose to educate your character. Some of the voice acting is a little rough and the art style is devoid of things we’ve come to expect from visual novels, like splash pages that actually show what your character is doing. Despite its flaws, Arcadia Fallen is a fantastic visual novel game, and a solid first step for Galdra Studios.

My issues with Arcadia Fallen have to do with my issues with the wider YA narrative genre that it belongs to, but I really cannot stand the tonal inconsistencies, the juvenile writing style, or the complete shallowness of these things and the thoughts they express. It seems that I'm increasingly in the minority here, but I'm not a fan of treating audiences like idiots. However, if YA writing doesn't annoy you as much as it does me, then you're going to really get along with this one, since the presentation is impeccable, and it does have its heart in the right place.
