Already played the DS/Wii version? No worries, the new puzzles and direction makes for a new and interesting experience.

Another Code: Recollection brings together puzzle-solving, fun stories with twists and turns, and very interesting characters and lore all in one place. This is a wonderful remake of the games that came out in 2005 and 2009. While the games aren’t too long, together, they make for a fun time by yourself or solving the mysteries with friends.

Overall, Another Code: Recollection comes recommended to those who love dialogue-heavy games. It’s a relaxing experience, with some head-scratching puzzles thrown in, made all the easier with the brilliant addition of the Compass and Hint functions.

The relationship with Ashley keeps him hooked until the very end, thanks to unexpected twists and turns filled with his family's past. Although it is satisfying to find answers to questions at the end of the journey, the end of the adventure leaves a bittersweet feeling. This visit to Blood Edward Island will leave players with unforgettable memories.

While the original DS title was an absolute classic with clever puzzles that require unique usage of the DS's features, the simplified and dumbed-down Switch rerelease turns the puzzle game into a basic visual novel. While the first game's story is unique, the sequel is painfully slow to get through. Despite my love for the original, this is a very hard game to recommend, especially given its $60 price point.

Two classic Nintendo games are back with a new look. The stories are still very engaging thanks to the interesting characters, now given more charisma because of good voice-acting. The puzzles are also fun but maybe a bit easy and less innovative compared with the original games. But that being said, Another Code: Recollection is a solid remake in terms of gameplay.

Another Code: Recollection is a chill, breezy adventure that’s light on challenge but heavy on charm. It’s one of the most ambitious remakes Nintendo has published in quite some time, and I’m thrilled Arc System Works lovingly modernized this pair of extremely niche puzzle adventures. While predictable mysteries, frustrating storytelling, and mediocre puzzle design hold it back from greatness, Recollection is redeemed by a completely overhauled presentation and excellent atmosphere. The entire journey is also tied together by its instantly-lovable lead, as Ashley’s personal quest to recover her lost memories is one I won’t soon forget.

The word that really sticks in my mind when describing Another Code Recollection is "pleasant." I never felt particularly annoyed at any point while I was playing, but I never felt a particularly strong sense of engagement, either. I just happily rode along with Ashley on her journey of self-discovery and mystery-solving until we both reached the end. I doubt I'll remember much about the game a couple of years from now, but it was a sweet little escape on a cold winter week. And sometimes, that's all a game really needs to be.

Another Code: Recollections is a “memory” that should be valued and now, thanks to this release, will avoid “fading” for some years to come yet. You can argue that it highlights fundamental weaknesses in puzzle and adventure games, where developers feel such an urgent need to make sure players don’t get stuck (and subsequently give up on the game) that they ensure the game basically plays itself. Recollections is certainly an easier experience than the games it is a remake of. But the real value of Cing’s cult masterpieces has been the stories they’ve told and the evocative and rich ambience of the storytelling environment, and the remake, here, builds on those qualities in a remarkable fashion.

There are any number of small issues with the controls I could nitpick, and even with some of the trimming that Another Code R received for its pacing - I still think more could have been done. Yet in a way, despite all of its changes, these little faults feel in line with the type of experiences that players would have received with the original releases, and recreates those feelings for a modern audience. I won't sit here and say that this is a perfect remake, or even that the original games were perfect in a vacuum. What I will say, is that even though the original versions of Another Code might end up lost to time, I'm glad that this remake exists to remember Cing's legacy, even if that legacy might have shifted in recollection.

If you have fond memories of Another Code, there is definitely value in re-experiencing the original and its sequel. Unfortunately, it feels like a missed opportunity to have made this classic, lesser-known series shine.

The new technical sector and a series of features from a playful and narrative perspective make this re-edition a valid way to (re)discover the story of Ashley Mizuki Robbins.

As things are, I'd only recommend this to lovers of the originals for nostalgia and fan service alone, and with a couple of caveats at that. If you're looking for way more intricate and engaging anime stories dealing with the mind, you have a great alternative in the two AI: The Somnium Files games on the same platform. That being said, I now can't help but wanting CiNG's own Kyle Hyde saga (Hotel Dusk and Last Window) to get the Switch HD treatment, just with a bit more care and polish.

My time with Ashley has been complicated, her family’s history filled with twists and turns, yet I’m sad to see it come to an end. As wonderful as it is to have answers to the questions that dogged me when the adventure first started, to see the credits roll is bittersweet. I don’t know if I’ll ever board a boat back to Another Code: Recollection now the shroud of mystery has lifted, but I’ll always be glad I took a chance and set out for Blood Edward Island.

Another Code: Recollection may not break much new ground, but it satisfyingly evokes memories of a simpler time.

I’m not sure I’d be able to recommend Another Code: Recollection to people who prefer a higher ratio of puzzle to story in their adventure games, but if you’re fond of visual novels I think this is a solid recommendation. If you have a younger relative looking for something unlike anything currently on the market, I think this would make for an incredible gift. It might just change the way they see the world, and speak to them in a way no other games are capable of.

Their pacing could have done with some more work, but this collection is as good a return to Ashley's world as fans could have hoped for.

It might still be a nice time if you're in the mood for something simple and slow-paced, but it's certainly no replacement for the originals.

If you want to experience the two Another Code games in a more or less completely new manner, the Recollection is a great opportunity for doing that. But new puzzles, cutscenes or voiceover can't hide that Another Code Recollection does not look and feel like a high value current game production.
