Tekken: Dark Resurrection is a good game and some sort of an standalone expansion for the PlayStation 2 version of Tekken 5. As far as I know, it is only available on PlayStation Portable, which results in some limitations in graphics, responsiveness and overall play-ability, in my humble opinion.

In Tekken: Dark Resurrection the story is the same as the original PlayStation 2 installment. The G Corporation attacks Heihachi in his building by deploying multiple Jack-4 robots and he, and Kazuya fight them off. One of the Jack’s explodes in front of Heihachi. Kazuya leaves him for dead and the only witness of the event is Raven, a ninja dude that confirms to his superiors that Heihachi is dead (or so everyone thinks). Everyone hears the news and assume the end of the Mishima Zaibatsu family. However, business has resumed again shortly after by someone unknown.

Not that much later, the King of Iron Fist Tournament 5 is announced. Finally, the sponsor and owner of the Mishima Zaibatsu is revealed to be Jinpachi Mishima, the father of Heihachi. He should be resting in peace, but is instead revived and possessed by a vengeful spirit, granting him unspeakable power and rage. In the Tournament, he faces off against Jin, who ultimately defeats him. Grateful for his eternal rest, Jinpachi dissolves into dust and ash. Afterwards, Jin becomes the new head of the Mishima Zaibatsu.

In addition, there are three new characters introduced, each with their own little backstory and motivation to enter the King of Iron Fist Tournament 5. You now got Lilli, also known as Emillie de Rochefort, a French girl that seeks to destroy the Mishima Zaibatsu family to put an end to the financial problems of her father (good luck with that). Then there is Armor King II, who seeks Craig Marduk and avenge his brother’s death by Craig’s hand. And lastly, my favorite character, Sergei Dragunov is introduced, who’s sole orders are to capture Jin Kazama for the Russian authorities.

The game mostly plays the same as the original Tekken 5, with some balancing upgrades like the removal of certain overpowered moves, new rankings, the removal of some old rankings, and the addition of much more customization items and mechanics. It also includes some new stages, which are all modified versions of the original ones.

A little irony in this version of Tekken 5 is that, despite the balancing updates, the end boss is still the abomination called Jinpachi. He still shoots his massive, one or two hit, purple fireballs that he barfs out from his dinosaur mouth in his belly, and he is still the definition of “get rekt”.

In terms of graphics, Tekken: Dark resurrection takes a hit. This is, of course, because the game was (before the PlayStation 3 port) only available on PSP. While it still looks all right and plays fluently in 60 FPS, certain detail in the characters and environments is missing. For what the PSP can do, it is just fine, and the limitations were to be expected.

The sound and music is still the same as the original game, with some added or modified tracks blended in. It sounds just as great as Tekken 5 on PlayStation 2 and earns my respect.

I was really worried that the controls would suck ass because of the limited thumb stick and the “OK” D-pad on the PlayStation Portable. To my relief, the developers took special care to make the controls as responsive as possible and mapped them as accurately as they could. Luckily, they did a fine job.

In the end, I enjoyed Tekken: Dark Resurrection. It played fine, felt like a true Tekken game instead of some half-baked port and the new characters, extra story and re-balancing (besides Jinpachi) was great. The only problem for me was, that this game exists on the PlayStation Portable, instead of a Home Console release. This was later fixed by porting the game to the PlayStation 3, but when I played it, PSP was the only way to go.

    Still recommend this game.

-We get two new characters to the series: Sergei Dragunov, a Russian agent who specializes in Russian Martial Arts and a French aristocratic girl called Lili who lives with her grandfather Sebastian. Armor King also makes his return to the series since Tag Tournament.
-New remixed stages with remixed music were created instead of using the Tekken 5 stages although we get the Streets, Ground Zero and Final Frontier stages.
-We get a bonus game mode with mini games for players to earn gold for the customization mode and a dojo mode to prove you are the greatest Tekken player.
-You could listen to the game's soundtrack and watch the endings when you beat Story Mode like Tekken 5 as well.

A great spin-off to my favorite fighting game series.

Probably one of the best fight games in PSP, makes the most of the graphical power that the console has.
The gameplay is excellent for the system, and has a wide range of characters in there, with a different stories each one. Excellent game at all!

The port itself is very good, having the tekken dojo as an extra content to tekken 5. The graphic and the sound also is convincing. The problem lies in the digi pad that gives you hard times, when you play a serious match where quick combinations and reflexes are needed. But expect this everything else is good.

Great Tekken gameplay with a large roster and plenty of extra modes online and offline (I'm a big Tekken Bowling fan). Tekken looks surprisingly good on PSP. In fact, no area has been sacrificed in the sizing-down of the game. This is the kind of game that works well on a portable device, with quick and satisfying action on hand whenever you need it.

Tekken: DR is awesome game packed with most of the fighters from other titles in series, huge amount of moves and combos and big number of unique special attacks for every character. Because of that this game is ritch with content like new game modes and two all new and powerfull characters. Tekken: DR is great port from big console on smaller. This game is worth your money.

i've never been a fan, or even casual player of this genre, but the graphics here is outstanding even for a psp, and the gameplay is very smooth and well designed. my only complain is that some characters, especially the main ones, are perceivably stronger, but that's understandable and i'm not going gripe over it.

I cannot believe this is a portable game. Every programming company should take notes on how to package a complete game like TEKKEN into the PSP. looks and plays just like any other TEKKEN game before it (which is a compliment).

Tekken DR is probably the greatest Tekken game ever and also the best fighting game, it boasts the greatest amount of characters in the canonical tekken series. Even when you feel you have played too much, you want to play that 1"last" round.

I just wanted to add my mini-review to all the other accolades. This game is easily the smoothest and nicest looking PSP game I have owned, and highly addictive....there's something about a good fighting game on this portable that I find much more attractive than in the bigger consoles, and Tekken is utterly perfect. It's only failing is that it lacks an interesting story mode I just wanted to add my mini-review to all the other accolades. Quite simply its the ultimate Tekken experience. The graphics are outstanding for the console while the gameplay is spot on and just as playable as the console version. While the series is a bit long in the tooth now, it still remains one of the best beat em ups around. This is arguably the best game in the series since Tekken 3.

This is really a must have. Game Sharing let you play with any other PSP player altougth he didn't own the game not limited to any fighter so you can play hours. (That's the best GameSharing game in the PSP). Great combats. Superb graphics and animations. Fighters personalization are great for solo play. Can't give it less than 10 points.

  1. A game that is so polished in pretty much all areas is pretty hard to come by, especially on a portable machine. Namco has definitely gone above and beyond the call of duty to bring the best Tekken experience to their fans on a portable medium. [JPN Import]

New modes, new characters (the slow-but-powerful Dragunov and the speedier mash-friendly Lili), incredible graphics, and plenty of other add-ons not only make Tekken a fantastic fighting experience, but one hell of a great PSP game as well.

Tekken: Dark Resurrection is proof that the PSP is powerful enough to handle a super-speedy, high-resolution 3D fighter without breaking a sweat.
