Multiplayer has its attributes, but stumbles hard when it comes to framerate and resembles a Monet painting at some points. Overall, I'd recommend it for single-player, but for Wi-Fi, well, I've offered my caveat emptors.
-
As a more portable take on the Star Wars experience, it won't disappoint most gamers. However, the unappealing space battles and paltry multiplayer options keep it from being a feather in the PlayStation Portable's cap.
-
Mirrors its console brethren in terms of complexity and scope but can’t keep up in performance. So while every vehicle, unit and weapon is at your disposal, you’ll need to contend with an unstable framerate and lackluster visuals while you take over the galaxy.
-
It's got some of the console and PC versions' concepts and mechanics, but the lack of both a story-based campaign and online multiplayer sucks a lot of the fun out of this PSP shooter.
-
It’s controls might not be the best but with a nice number of maps, space battles, Jedis and PSP-only game modes, this is the game to own when you’re far from your console or PC.
-
PSM MagazineThere's just some unrealized potential here that keeps good from becoming great. [Holiday 2005, p.96]
-
While the console ports are more recommended for their details and expansion, the PSP version is certainly no slouch.
-
If you are looking for a console shooter on the handheld, then this is your best bet. It's unfair to expect more from the PSP when the demands are so huge, but the PSP is easily online ready, and Star Wars Battlefront II just doesn't feel the same without going online.
-
Official U.S. Playstation MagazineTerrible framerate during multiplayer. [Jan 2006, p.104]
-
Sure, it's not challenging in the least, but hey, killing Ewoks was never about the challenge. [Jan 2006, p.127]
-
It can be fun in its own right to those who are both Star Wars fans and who can be a little patient with the controls.
-
Game InformerThere is a certain charm to this game, but it's basically a big Jedi mind trick. [Jan 2006, p.157]
-
You have this great game, which is so fun to play at home and online (especially over Xbox Live), and when you’re prepped to take it on the road with you all you are left with are white knuckles of frustration.
-
Fiddly control issues aside, Star Wars Battlefront II on PSP is a miniature miracle. [PSW]
-
I would have given Battlefront II a strong recommendation if it had infrastructure mode (Internet) online multiplayer but unfortunately it doesn’t which is a show-stopper, especially when you consider the retail price of the game.
-
If you are looking for a great portable Star Wars experience that blends console gameplay with portable style and flare, and you can bare with some technical setbacks, you are in for a real treat with Star Wars Battlefront 2.
-
Computer Games MagazineThere's simply no way to get your fingers around it all. [Feb 2006, p.93]
-
Not only is it the best handheld adaptation of a major console title, it adds extensive PSP-exclusive features making this a must-own game, even if you already have the game for another system.
-
The PSP version is a definite second stringer. Again, it seems aimed at players so obsessed with the game that they also need a portable fix, because it is not nearly the complete product its bigger brothers are.
-
Savage and Pandemic should be applauded for cramming as much of the Battlefront experience into the PSP, but we can always play what-if, and the omission of even online play is a pretty serious shortcoming. It's good, but not must-have good.
-
Official Playstation 2 Magazine UKBattlefront II marches onto PSP without losing its keep strategic edge or its blaster-happy action. [Christmas 2005, p.110]
-
Pure Magazine UKWould have benefitted from an Infrastructure mode but the force is still strong in this one. [Jan 2007, p.67]

May 21, 2019I put so many hours into this game when I was a kid, and if my PSP was still working, I think I still would enjoy it.
