While the graphics needed more polish and the load times occasionally interrupt the flow of battle, R-Type Command presents an intense challenge with plenty of sci-fi flair that should satisfy most gamers.
-
R-Type Command is an excellent chunk of addictive gaming set in a military sci-fi space opera, and an easy recommendation for anyone with the small amount of patience a good strategy game requires.
-
Playstation: The Official Magazine (US)R-Type Command isn't a bad game per se; it's just incredibly average, with too many flaws to overlook. [Aug 2008, p.79]
-
It may not have been a direct hit, but R-Type Command's mission was certainly accomplished.
-
Games Master UKPlenty of R-Type substance but it's not for action gameplay lovers. [Sept 2008, p.85]
-
Play UKSolid, accessible and well presented. [Issue#170, p.80]
-
Playstation Official Magazine UKWith little point in tactical withdrawal, all the missions starts to feel the same. [Nov 2008, p.119]
-
Hardcore devotees of Irem's legendary shooter series may balk at the methodical gameplay but R-Type Tactics ranks as an intelligent and entertaining extension of the R-Type universe.
-
R-Type Tactics is an original and risky bet in the series with good results in this title. It's a game with an interesting offer although the experience is a little short and doesnt have a deep enough strategy. Technologically it has a good level with great possibilities, but the graphics are still anchored in the classic genre and we saw better sounds effects in last games on the PSP. A new and wonderful experience for many players but maybe a little disappointing for the followers of the franchise.

games(TM)R-Type Tactics eventually finds its feet and develops into a satisfying and addictive PSP game. [Nov 2008, p.102]
-
When you play a game and find the most immersive sections are cut-scenes and the game isn’t called Metal Gear Solid, then you know something isn’t quite right.
-
AceGamezIt's nice to see something different being attempted with a sequel and R-Type Tactics is a success on so many levels. I loved it, yet I can't help feeling that, if only it were on the PSP's big brother or one of the other 'under-the-telly' machines, it would be so much better.
-
R-Type Tactics lies among that enjoyable second tier of turn-based games currently occupied by the likes of Warhammer 40,000: Squad Command.
-
Playstation Official Magazine AustraliaIt's slickly presented, but it's just not R-Type. [Jan 2009, p.79]
-
Edge MagazineTactics lacks what it needs the most, which is the seemingly limitless potential achieved by its predecessor. [Feb 2008, p.94]
-
PSM3 Magazine UKFans might feel confused at first, but they won't be disappointed. [Feb 2008, p.78]
-
Play MagazineThe R-Type shooters have always been tough-as-nails, and as it turns out, the strategy game is no different - a rarity and a blessing in Japanese games of late. [Jan 2008, p.69]
-
The biggest issue with the game, besides the slow pace, is that each level feels roughly the same, despite the shifting settings of each stage.
-
Completion of a stage in R-Type Command is every bit as rewarding as it was in its shoot 'em up predecessors, but without the painful hand cramp. Give your trigger finger a rest and pick this title up.
-
R-Type Command is an excellent strategy game that’s nearly killed by its slower-than-bearable pace. Strategy gamers, though likely frustrated and contemplating an exit strategy, will want to endure the monotony to reap the benefits: engrossing combat, great levels, and larger-than-life boss battles.
-
Even if you only play the massive single player campaign, R-Type Command is a breath of fresh air in an industry filled with “me too” knock-offs and umpteenth sequels.
-
If you can look past some technical shortcomings and a few gameplay annoyances, R-Type Command is a good strategy game that, when treated almost like a board game, will definitely entertain.
-
To fans the game may just make them more nostalgic for past R-Type games and a proper, if by-the-numbers, sequel. For hardcore turn-based strategy fans nearly every minus (the slow pacing, lengthy campaign, etc.) may actually be a plus.
-
R-Type Command makes for a great portable game for those who love turn-based strategy games.
-
This game will take you a bit of time to beat, but asking $40 might be a bit on the high side.
-
If you dig R-Type and strategy (or just the latter), Command definitely does the trick, but shooter fans are better off waiting for the next one.
-
Though it doesn't look space-aged, R-Type Command offers you a mildly entertaining future in which you'll spend hours and hours blasting aliens with rockets.
-
I think that fans of the game are going to get more out of this game than most others, though again I think fans of R-Type are more interested in playing a shmup than an SRPG. That fact aside, R-Type Command is a solid reinvention of the series.
-
You're not going to find a perfect game in R-Type Command, but what you will find is an engrossing tactical role-playing game that turns the genre on its side.
