Simply put thee best RPG ever to be put on this earth. The graphics are revolutionary for its time and the addition system made the turn based combat system that much more interactive. NEEDS a sequel.

Sony. If you are reading this, please. Everyone wants a sequel/remake. Do it. Do it if you want the money of everyone who enjoys a good RPG. Seriously, this game is like Final Fantasy on crack. You actually have to pay attention while you're attacking or the attack fails. Incredibly addictive and the story sucked me in for sure.

    Story/Plot: 9/10
This is by far the most complete story with a very logical thought process behind the plot. It begins with a simple mystery of the main female character that slowly but progressively leads to the revelation of the plot at the end. The story comes with a solid background that is told pieces by pieces throughout each part of the game which you will also get some additional exposition if you take the effort to explore and interact with the NPCs in the game. Its a magical world, with themes that deals with racism, god/creation and some subtle ones like capitalism and freedom etc. Admittedly its not the most extraordinary story or plot that leaves you stunned at its revelation, its still a very well composed and complete story that one can easily enjoy with no moments of it throwing you off.

    Game play: 9/10
Its battle mechanic, namely the "Additions" is the most extraordinary element of the game. Games like Final Fantasy with timing based turns rewards players for faster reaction but Legend of Dragoon took that to a next level, which reward players with better execution with their Additions. Its a combo system like those in fighting games that is imbued into turned based RPGs. This gives the game an additional element of skill base execution play on top of the strategic play in turn based RPGs. In my opinion, its probably the most innovative thing in a game of its time. And true enough, games today gravitate towards real time play because players feel more engage with the characters and the game that way. On top of that, it also offers other options of play by turning into Dragoon form and using items.

The one element lacking in the game play is the ability to explore the areas in the game freely. Its not quite not a closed world but players can't easily explore different parts of the world, at least not until the later part of the game. There are some side quests that would prompt you to explore outside of the linear progression of the game but unfortunately there isn't many of them.

    Design: 8/10
Personally i have no problem with the design, like the color codes of the characters but it definitely lacks originality in the concept of the character design. However, growing up with the likes of power rangers, and that i was only 11 years old when i played this game, such design philosophy actually did appeals to me. The dragoon transformation is probably also not a novelty, again, with the likes of power rangers and some anime/manga at the time. Despite so, Legend of Dragoon still manage to come up with a world and concept that feels uniquely its own. Often times we see games of medieval, magical, mythology and action genre/themes, but its not often we see them all in a single game and having it done so cohesively that it feels natural.

    Graphics: 9/10
Its a little disappointing that the game engine used is similar to that of Final Fantasy 7, a game that is 2 years before it. Still, it is worthy of a 8/10 rating in the graphics department simply because of what it achieved with an older game engine. It had beautiful fully cinematic cut scenes that has good cinematography. Coming from a VFX artist perspective, graphics in terms of realism in LoD is even harder to achieve that than of even Final Fantasy 8. Don't get me wrong, Final Fantasy 8 had the better graphics overall, but much of it is achieved with higher resolution and better rendering engine. LoD had to create most of its visuals from the 2D side namely textures and background planes and it turns out exceptionally beautiful and stunning. I can only imagine the graphics to be even more astounding had they used better engines, which is why people are dying for a remake of this game.

    Conclusion: 9/10
Complete! Completeness is the feeling i get from playing this game, from start to the end, everything needed to tell the story and play the game was there and it was done so at a pretty high level which is why i gave it 9/10. One thing to note, i wasn't very much exposed to many different types of games at the time i played legend of dragoon, which is why i find many of its genre, themes and design that weren't exactly original acceptable to me. I wasn't bothered at all with confounding elements that would affect my judgement of the game. And as i grow older, having went back and played games like Final Fantasy 7&8, Vagrant Story etc. I personally still find Legend of Dragoon the better game simply because of its completeness compared to its counterparts. My take is simple, play LoD as what the game is and you will be able to enjoy it from a gamer point of view. The reason why critics scores differ so much from the users is simply because they criticize it in comparison with other games, they are critics not gamer.

I don't care what anyone else says, this game is terrific. To tell the truth, I'd pick this over any Final Fantasy game anyday. People who try to give this game a bad name are just jealous that it rocks more than FF. or they dirt poor and can't get the game. I love Meru, who is my favorite character, and the handsome bad guy, LLoyd.

Battle mode is a real-time 3D environment that resembles the current field map. Turn-based battles occur between playable characters and CPU-controlled enemies. Standard actions such as attack, defend, item and escape are present. The world map is used when the player moves between towns or other geographical locations. The World Map doesn't allow for free movement, and instead the player follows a guided path between destinations.

Im glad to be able to experience this game on RetroArch these days, truly a classic in the genre, a classic I feel puts fear in developers now days at the thought of a remake, shivering in their slacks, knowing deep down what they have become, all graphics and no story.
The game keeps you on edge with well spaced events, in a way I feel the graphics themselves tie the game together, If I remember correctly from reading years ago the game took 10 years to develope and most of the world was hand drawn backgrounds.
Some triple A titles these days wont even make me pay 53 bucks for them, so you know this game hit all the right spots ,then, and even more important, even as an adult it still hits those spots, that is a raritey. I went through the first disk on my recent playthrough without having to restart any fight due to full party death.
I want to end with this, if you never played this as a kid...had that carry over nostalgia, then you will probably play this in a very critique manner, missing the fact it is PS1, missing all the companionship and indavidual stories, forgetting to admire the level of in world detail for its respective age..

It's true, no game is without flaws, but this game, for it's time period, was truly epic.

I can't tell you much more than that, nothing can explain the experience, just play it through to the end, follow the story and the characters.

LOD truly deserves a Prequel, Remake, Sequel or all 3 in one game with UHD textures (and possibly designed on a game engine that will make it even more beautiful than it was such as Frostbite 3 or CryEngine) and full audio dialogue from the characters, that's it. everything else including the combat system should remain intact.

Another amazing addition would be making LOD completely open world like Skyrim.

You can have 3 members in your party. When it's your turn, you attack, defend, use items, or transform into Dragoons (more on this later). The attack system is really the innovative part. You time input of the X button as rotating squares align with the center square on screen. If the timing isn't perfect, your combo stops. You keep up the perfect timing until your combo is finished. With every 20 perfect combo you pull off-called "additions"-your addition gets stronger. The perfect timing sounds hard, but it's really not. It just takes a little practice, and seeing your addition play out on screen is always fun. There are anywhere from 3 to 7 additions for each character, and you switch out additions whenever you feel like it. There's plenty to master here with the number of playable characters. You later gain the ability to transform into a Dragoon, a flying warrior capable of performing magical attacks. In this state your attack and defense power increase, and you can level up your Dragoon Level in addition to regular level. You have a threat indicator above you that shows when you'll engage in battle. It increases in threat level as you move around and the screen fades to battle. Some might find this annoying, but I liked having the chance to get stronger.
Format: You play from a sort of backed-away view. It's third person, but not zoomed in like with Uncharted or Dead Space. You travel from area to area via the world map. Once you know what your objective is, you just go to the right area and go from there.
Environments: You'll encounter everything under the sun: from underwater settings to expansive deserts. And every place is extremely diverse with its own interactions. In a dragon's lair, you'll climb spiderweb-like strings. On a snowy mountain, you'll slide down slopes. In the desert, you'll get sucked into sand-whirlpools. Then there's of course the cities to visit. Each city has its own feel; you can enter shops, houses, castles, hotels-you name it. The developers were really imaginative with everything. Graphics: Outdated by today's standards, but impressive for its time. You can still make out figures, so it's not too bad. Personally, though, I don't play games for their graphics.
Story: Very well written. It starts off as a simple rescue-the-damsel-in-distress but evolves into so much more, and I really can't give away too much plot detail. Just know that there are a couple plot twists and that along the way you'll meet new party members that you'll come to know and love. This is one heck of a 4-disc story.
Quests: There's plenty of things to do to occupy your time. Aside from the main quest, there's a few side quests that include freeing souls, battling an evil wizard, hunting a wolf, and collecting Stardust for items. Then there's even special enemies that drop special items. These are unusual foes you'll encounter on the world map that involve using a different battle strategy.
Gripes: As I've said, the graphics aren't the best, but put yourself in the year 2000 and they're mind-blowing. Another minor thing is that the voice acting is absolutely dreadful. But take heart, there are maybe 3 scenes in the ENTIRE game that use voice acting.
Overall: An incredibly awesome experience. It spans the length of 4 discs, is immensely fun to play, and is more than worth the $6 it costs on PSN. Do yourself a favor and play this game.

Being on of my favorite video games of all time, I think that it deserves a sequel. I wish it would get a sequel, but I know that it won't, but whatever.

This is NOT a game that you will blow through, in a weekend. It's a pretty long game, and you will be playing a second playthrough, as you go through the second disc. Some might say that this game, is overrated, and doesn't deserve all the praise it gets, but they are wrong. I know that it is there opinion, but it is wrong. Very rare, I will say that, and this is one of those cases, where I just have to say it. This game, is that good.

    Plot Summary:
It's about this 23 year old, adult male named Dart. He visits his hometown Seles, after leaving it for 5 years, on the search for the Black Monster. He however, gets attacked by a Dragon along the way, and gets saved by a women by the name of Rose. He notices that Seles is in shambles, and rushes towards it. He then finds out, that his childhood friend Shina, was kidnapped by the Serdian army, and was taken to Hellena Prison. Dart sets out to rescue Shina.

When he gets their, he saves a man by the name of Lavitz, and he helps Dart save Shina. All three of them escape from Hellena, and flee to Lavitz's homeland. It's there that we find out, that they are in the middle of a civil war. As the plot goes on, you make Rose again, and find out that Dart is a Dragoon, he has to find the other Dragoons to save the world.

I would go on with the plot, but I don't wanna spoil anything.

    Gameplay:
It's like your standard JRPG, only a little different. This game uses something that you will never see in any other RPG, called the "Addition System". Basically, you use the X button (or the O button, if your enemy is about to counter. If you fail then you take damage) at the right timing. The more you use an addition, the more it will level up (of course, you have to do it, perfectly). Leveling up, your additions will not only make your moves more powerful, but it will also fill up your SP meter, which you need to transform into a Dragoon. Dragoon's also have their own additions, but they also have magic. The way you level up, your Dragoon, is too use it quite a bit.

    Music and Voice Overs:
The music is some of the best I have ever heard. It blow my mind, when I was a kid, and it still blows my mind. It still holds up today, and it is still some of my favorite video game music of all time.

At the time, voice overs in games like this, was nothing less then amazing. It's a little cheesy for today's standards, but back then, I thought it was pretty good.

    Final Thoughts:
This is still one of my favorite video games of all time. For the most part, I think that it was aged pretty well. I always thought that Final Fantasy X, was my favorite video game of all time, but as I'm finishing up this review, I now realize just how much I love Legend of Dragoon. It's a game, that I always take time out of my day, to play. Like I most of beaten the game at least, 20 times now that I think about it. As a game that I played a lot, and still play today, I think that it deserves all the praise it gets. In my personal opinion, I think that it is one of the best RPGs of all time.

It deserves a 10 out of 10. It was fun to play back then, and it is still fun to play today. If you are a fan of RPGs, give this one a try. Trust me, you won't be disappointed.

As far as gameplay goes...wow! Never has an RPG had such an addictive fighting system, seriously, it's ridiculous. Every single fighting move you have you can level up to 5-6 tiers for every character.
This is a fantastic RPG that still holds up in 2012, though the graphics are painful to look at nowadays, you can get used to them. Great buy.

However, I was able to finish this game only now, after almost 12 years, and it was well worth the waiting! And surprisingly, the game is extremely well aged to this day, with good graphics even to this day (of course, it's a PS1 game, but a lot of other games had way worse), a good combat that is pretty simplistic yet kind of fresh, a very good plot that had quite some interesting twists now and then...and, especially for us europeans, some of the worst voice acting that nowadays is almost a cult for how bad it was, so bad that I grew to love the "Doppio Colpo" memes around the web!

But jokes aside, it's very hard to pick on this game because, comparing to RPGs nowadays, this game is still a beast in both storytelling and character development, even with the occasional hiccup now and then. But this game does what an RPG should do: entertain the player with a story and with likeable characters, using a fighting system that doesn't become boring too quick: and this game does almost everything right.

The characters are enjoyable, they are likeable and even the worst ones (most likely Miranda and Kongol), are likeable and we kinda feel sad for them when something happens or when they get hurt or when someone disappeared: that's because they don't annoy us and they keep us interested on what they could hide and on what they could be, and despite sometime it's pretty clear the game won't tell you right away or actually never tell you at all, leaving you to think if you're right or wrong. Character development at its finest.

The story is always interesting, it always has some twists, and it's a story of travel as well of a pursuit...and it all starts from literally a mere civil war, and then you literally cannot know what can happen next. In addition the world has an interesting background that it's heavily revolved around it, which is a very good plus and makes the world more lively than usual.

And the combat, while it's not perfect, it's still very good because it's a sort of timing type of combat that actually requires some practice when you learn it (it becomes easy soon enough). The only problem is that the combat is heavily based more on physical than magical attacks, since you won't get any magic right away and magic itself is pretty limited (each character except Kongol has 4 spells). Still, it's pretty good, but maybe too slow paced.

And like I said, it's hard to pick on this game: my biggest complains, aside the bad voice acting for my version, is that the combat is both useless and required: useless because grinding is nearly impossible due to the lack of experience you get AND the fact that experience is split in 3, which was really annoying since you literally need hours to get even one level up (until the last part of the game, where you had a lot more). But also it's required because the only reason for using battles is to train your Additional attacks, which is the main thing of the combat, with each skill levelling up to 5 times and increasing their power: that alone is a must for later game and requires an immense time to level them all together, even though if you do it slowly from the start you can easily save time and you also get some good gold from it. In addition, the game lacks content, as in you basically have 3-4 sidequests in total (at least, the big ones) and there's not much exploration either, even though the world is pretty big.

Still, this was probably one of the best RPGs of the Ps1 era and considering the amount of good RPGs back in that time, it's quite the accomplishment: perhaps I'm ignoring many flaws of this game and perhaps I'm being very subjective on this game, but mostly because this game still does what good RPGs should do and I feel sad that I hardly feel the same enjoyment from newer RPGs.

It's still a very good game to this day and if you're able to get it, I highly recommend to try it out and see why "The Legend of Dragoon" is, quite literally, a legend.

The character design is amazing too, especially the dragoon armors. The soundtrack is praise better than FF7 soundtrack.by some. Play for yourself if you enjoy classic RPG. Expand

The addition system trying to time attacks perfectly for an incredibly rewarding combo. When Dart made his ascent unknowingly into a Legendary Dragoon to fight a crazed Giant, I was like what?? I put a great deal of time, 80 plus hours engaged in a timeless fight with complex characters. The Legend of Dragoon gave to me my first experience in the area of philosophy portraying a world that is not Black & White however Grey. I found myself empathizing for enemies and enraged at supposed heroes. This game was my, "Allegory in a Cave" awakening. This adventure spans four discs and is worth every moment. Whomever calls the plot simple needs a MRI. An ancient race, enslaved Humans and a calamitous battle. LOD has a rich history that drives the plot and opens up from a mere human war for territory into the fight for its future due to the distant past. A collision of past present and future and a philosophy and character design that delves into the complexity of a human being and it makes you question whether a hero could actually be a villain. The one negative for me was that you can only have a certain defined amount of items in your inventory and it becomes a struggle to choose what you is necessary for your journey hoarders beware! Enter The Legend of Dragoon. What essentially was a FF VII remake set in a medieval setting, The Legend of Dragoon set the bar for a few things, including having fully voiced characters long before any FF game did, and a mini-game style battle system that required precision and concentration to get the full damage from your team.
What set this game apart was the fact that you could turn into a Dragoon once per battle. Dragoons had awesome looking armor and special abilities that could turn the tide of the battle. It was fun to collect the hidden Dragoon pieces as not everyone in the party would get them when they joined. This actually brings up a negative spot in the game as backtracking is awful. You will backtrack quite often in the game and you are required to run through every town and field and plain that you've already been too, to get back to where you need to be. It's beyond annoying, especially since the first time you'll do it, you'll be backtracking through at least 15 different areas.
But the rest of the game is fun. The voice actors do a great job conveying the characters emotions and the plot is pretty good. It doesn't exactly hold up nowadays but, at the time, it was nice to see a main character who wasn't a brooding child whining bout everything. And while not all the characters are very good, they still do a decent job of coming together to form a great party.
I really had alot of fun with this game and I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for an old school JRPG not named Final Fantasy. The game is fairly dated at this point however and the backtracking that is involved with some of the quest is beyond awful, including a horrendous random battle encounter rate that seems to be through the roof. But there's a certain charm here, especially with some of the things that this game has and others lack, including the voice overs. Give this game some time and it'll worm its way into your RPG heart. Every old-school RPG fan owes it to themselves to play through this game once. You'll be surprised by how good it is.

As a youth, 4 years of age when this game came out I can certainly say that this game was one of my favorites, and of course one of my most frustrating games to finish. As an RPG made after FFVII there has been debates as to which is better. In comparison its most certain that the graphics are better, the battle system can be a bit frustrating at first but is more towards players who have knowledge of timing. The story was pretty well done and with a bit more extra content I would've really liked this game however FFVII had more content that I even overlooked than LoD. I gave this a 9/10 because in regards to the times, this was an amazing RPG to play on that little grey box that we all held so dearly. Expand

Still by far my favorite game of all time. Literally the best, nothing will surpass this masterpiece for me. I still wish I could play through it again for the first time and relive those great memories.

Honestly, I have no clue how this game has over a 9 from the user score. Seriously??? I bought this back in the day and it was alright - I actually ended up beating it. I guess it was fine as a 19 year old lol. But man, it sure is dated and did not age well like FFVII has and well...this is NO FFVII even though it wants to be.

I tried it out recently and couldn't play it for more than 30 min. The music (even though it does get good later on with a few themes) isn't great for the most part. The graphics are only good for the water effects and the battle system is slow paced and don't get me started on the story and especially writing. It's so boring and the writing has no soul or charisma.

I can get through the story of FFVII even today but this is just stale and lifeless. The characters act and more importantly feel so mechanical and not like real people at all. It really throws things off and makes me not care about the game's story at all. I did care back in 2000 but now, I truly find it difficult to keep myself invested in this.

Sorry, but I can understand why this did not get a sequel. It just isn't that good.

    ESTO MERECE UN REMAKE!!

I believe that the game is as original as an rpg can be. Most rpgs have the same basic story, an uneducated man discovers that he has the power to save the world. The game play is what sets them apart. The use of additions in fights adds an element of skill to this game that others lack. And the graphics of the FMV's is incredible.

Sadly overshadowed by Final Fantasy VII (which was a great title in its own right), some of the criticism of this game is unfair. I recall reading one review that stated that it went so far with the use of the word "bastard" (a legitimate claim, since it *did* have a lot of usage in this game), that there was even a "Bastard sword". A brilliant game that managed to offer more than most rpgs could ever. The graphics some have called flat and dry, however for a Playstation one game, I'd have to say those cutscenes look about as awesome as any other. Some say the voice acting is terrible, and I'd have to agree a bit there, however that was undertaken by the english dubbing staff and I do not consider them to be on par with the Japanese. Many have complained about the battle system and its similarity to Final fantasy, ironically I see nothing that can be remotely connected to final fantasy 7, or 8. The additions provided a much more interactive battle as opposed to Final fantasy 7 which was mostly mashing on the attack key or flipping through some menus. The dragoon system was also quite interesting and allowed the character in question to embody the element they represented, a few call that simplistic but I say it works. All this put together - many claim that the fighting system requires too much precision and too much involvement...personally I was 15 years old when I played Lod and I mastered it fine...I'm not sure what the critics are doing but eh. Lastly, the story many say had nothing engaging in it...and that the characters were not able to fully carry or develop the story, to that I say...the story was one of the most moving I have ever witnessed, the characters were all developed well and the scenery of both the present and 11,000 years ago are just spectacular. This is not to mention the incredible twists and turns the plot offers to keep the player on the edge of their seat. If ever there was a game that deserved to have a sequel, it is this one. Expand

Out of the hundreds of hours I've invested into this piece of art, Legend Of Dragoon still hasn't gotten old. Even games like Dragon Quest 8 are still trying to catch up with this title's underappreciated gameplay innovations. Long live the King, Legend Of Dragoon.

NOW for the review! LoD is a great game back in 2000 it was branded as the 'ff killer' it was almost that, but in my opinion it could have used a little more work (Better translation would have probably given it a better rep) And the graphics for it's time were pretty good, It was a small step above ff7 but wasn't has good as ff8 (not even close) The ps3 does give LoD a nice graphics boost (smoothies things out nicely) Overall i'd say if you dont have it get it its VERY cheap now my friend got a copy for $7.00, I got it when it first came out for $50, But it is a worthy game for any RPG Gamers collection! When all is said and done, The LoD is like your typical one-night stand: it's OK for a quick fix but it's nothing that will get you emotionally involved.
  2. To each his own opinion but for this one reviewer Legend of Dragoon is truly legendary.
  3. A fifty+ hour game, beautiful sound and graphics, and an interactive fighting system all wrapped in one great experience.
